With my cartoon avatar it is pretty obvious that it's not what I look like. If I had a picture of a model up though, I'm sure some would think it was me. Then there would be that uncomfortable moment when I had to break the bad news that I'm old, my boobs aren't a size FF that point straight up, I have (God forbid!!!) stretch marks and scars on my tummy and probably couldn't fit even one thigh into the size zero outfit the model is wearing. I have to wonder what that conversation would go like, what the response would be and if it may ultimately result in people thinking that I was trying to "pull one over" and not give me a further look.

To be honest, I am very comfortable and happy with the way I look and don't think I would have a hard time "breaking" the news.  Just because this model isn't me, doesn't mean I don't think I am hot, it just means I thought it was a pretty cool pic that anyone could find if they looked at the avatars, so it's not like they couldn't find out with a bit of research.  Like I said though, I am not looking and it doesn't really matter to me one bit what anyone thinks I look like.  When I had my profile up, I had my pics there and still sometimes used one of these.  All it took then was someone clicking and finding out.  I guess I don't see it as a big deal, and nothing for me to worry my brain over.

Sorry to let everyone down that it's not me..lol..didn't know anyone thought it was since it was able to be found in the avatars.  I like the colour of hair, the look on her face, and I love red.. so I figure it fits my personality pretty well.  [:D]

lol erin....no i dont.....i think that Collarme only gives you a few pages of choices for an avatar.... most places let you use your own....this leads to enevitable repeats...[;)]

Yes, it would be nice to be able to use our own avatars here on this site too. I wonder what the primary reason is, why we can't.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 11:05:09 AM)

Too many people would be liable to upload pics of, I don't know, elephants fucking or something.

SusanofO -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 11:18:08 AM)

Actually, I never meant to decieve anyone with my avatar, Mistoferin. I am in the process of changing it. I just re-wrote my profile and am changing my avatar to the other one I liked before (it's sort of Audrey Hepburn-like. I think Mavis is using it too, so there may be some confusion there, as to which one of us is discussing things under that avatar. Hope it doesn't become too much of a mess, confusion-wise, in discussions).

Geez, why such a potentially divisive topic? Do you really think the people who pick these avatars are doing it to purposely mislead people? Maybe some are, but maybe some just like the avatar. I know I did.

Besides - isn't it kind of moot? After you start getting to know someone, don't most people send  pics of themselves anyway? I did.

SusanofO -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 11:37:30 AM)

I forget how to do this. Can anyone tell me where the avatars are located on this site? I can't remember, and I do want to change mine.  I can't find them.  Where are they?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you very much.

mistoferin -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 11:38:01 AM)

You misunderstood....when I referenced yours I was not implying that you did anything. We had a brand new poster here recently with your avatar and someone mistook them for you.

Divisive topic? Gee, it was just a question. Just one of those things that was making me go Hmmmm today is all. Wasn't accusing anyone of anything........

SusanofO -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 11:39:52 AM)

Okay, I probably misunderstood you. Sorry for that.
I am changing mine, though, because there were actually three people I remember who mistook me for Liv Tyler (I wish).

I guess it boils down to intent. If you choose something with the intent to call it 'you', especially if you are actually in the market for someone as opposed just here to enjoy the forums or something, then to me that would be construed as deceptive. I don't think anyone is going to mistake a picture of a toaster for someone actually 'being' a toaster but someone choosing a model shot or something, yes, certainly. I don't have the avatars turned on, so I either see the pics the person has on their profile or nothing at all which is why I have no idea of what Benji looks like so in my mind, he's a furry mutt. [:D] I tend to form my own pictures in my head based on someone's posting style if they don't have a picture. I haven't been right yet! [8D]

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 11:48:18 AM)

Oh definitely.  My perception of people's appearance is often formed by their avatar.  When I actually click on their profile or their other pictures, I am usually surprised.  I know I shouldn't be, but such is the way of things.  When you're constantly seeing a certain image in connection with a person's words it is difficult to disassociate the two.

Edited to add: And of course, it's obvious that the woman in my avatar is a model.  Right?  [:D]

LadyEllen -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 12:01:54 PM)

Just in case anyone is confused.

Yes, that really is me, and not a glamour model.

It would be an easy mistake to make of course, so I thought I'd best clear it up.

I often see people choose avatars that are a photo of some gorgeous model type woman. For many of us, we have come to know over time that it's not their picture. I have seen many times though, that someone mistakenly thinks it IS their photo. The avatar that was chosen by SusanofO comes to mind most recently when someone saw it used by another poster and assumed it was Susan under a new name. Does anyone view this as deceptive advertising?

I'm of the mind that, when it is a real pic, it is somewhat misleading.  Deceptive?  That depends on the person's intent and that can be difficult to judge unless they come right out and encourage people to really think that the picture seen is really them.

Personally, I am more fond of the drawings and the more obscure pix...like LAM's and my own.  I picked the 8 ball for my own reasons and I've really enjoyed hearing some of the guesses that have been made as to why I picked it.

Yeah.

When it's obviously a cartoon or drawing, then you can tell it's fantasy.  But when you put a real persons pic up, it's only natural to associate that to you.

I don't think it's necessarily malicious or wrong- but it does amount to false advertising.

Are you suggesting that I am not Stimpy in real life?

MisPandora -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 12:15:43 PM)

There are a few guys using the same avatar of a handsome fellow standing in a white shirt in the water.  It's stock photography I managed to find a copy of when I was cruising gettyimages one day.  For the longest time, I thought it was THE person using the avatar!

MasterFireMaam -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 12:38:14 PM)

Yes, to me, using a photo of someone else is deception...unless it's of a well-known person that everyone knows you're not (like Einstein). Then, that ranks in the realms of wishful thinking or playfulness, like your fairy.

Master Fire - real pic of me [;)]

Well god damn! I always thought it really was that handsome fellow. I am bummed now, thought he was kinda cute and all.

Celeste, you reminded me that if and when I ever did meet benji I think I would expect a mischiveous round yellow face on a man's body. I would probably be shocked otherwise.

truesub4u -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 12:54:25 PM)

<Fast Reply>

I've seen peepss battle over pics. Met a girl once... comment on how lovely her pic was on one site... she had never been to the site...LOL... she got there and was shocked to see her face there. She now knew why she was getting more e-mails than normal. Felt kinda sorry for her.

I use a drawing... but don't consider it false advertising... specially when my profile shows a pic of me. I use to have pic as my avatar... just wanted a change one day and did it... no biggy really.  I'm sure one day i'll change it back... but my avatar i picked more for the quote... not the pic...

SusanofO -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 12:59:09 PM)

For anyone who seriously thinks I am Audrey Hepburn: This is my official notice I am Not.

I'm sorry for choosing another person's photo for my avatar (again), if it bothers anybody who really may think I am Audrey Hepburn, or am misleading anyone by using it.

I can't help it if I just don' wanna be: Stimpy, a Faerie, or a doggie, or a picture of a tree, etc. - I just don't. I really like this avatar (it's the only other one I ever wanted to use - however I do appreciate the vast selection available - it's nice for CM to offer). I do have photos and will send them to people - but am not using one as an avatar because I do volunteer work with unmentionables and feel it's just too risky for me.

I just like the Audrey Hepburn pic. "Breakfast At Tiffany's" is one of my favorite movies! But - I am Not trying to pass myself off as Audrey Hepburn (truly), for anyone who wonders. I am here at CM for discussion.

The reason I am bothering to clarify this point is that I do agree w/Misoferin (after some thought) and believe that this can cause confusion sometimes, for people (the celeb or other people's photos as avatars) - But - I also agree with Bita Trouble that intent counts the most as far as the person's motive for using the avatar. I think some folks maybe use 'em because they like 'em and some maybe for other reasons. In any case, if you e-mail someone for awhile, eventually, don't people usually exchange photos? I think it's not a big deal for that reason.

Aileen68 -> RE: Can avatars be deceptive advertising? (12/4/2006 1:04:32 PM)

I rarely read the name anymore of the regular posters.  I recognize their avatar.
SusanofO...I thought you were Mavis just because the avatar.  Welcome back.
Michele (NOMC) great new pic.  Thought it was a  model.  Motherhood agrees with you.
And yes...that is LaM on the left.  In fact, elephants have been known to bow down and worship him as he struts on by.
