Status: offline 		I tend to buy myself particular designer label items as a reward.  I have two beautiful and dreadfully pricey fountain pens which I use every day and each one is a reminder of particular jobs I got.  I usually treat myself to a new oroton handbag once or twice a year though they would be classed as cheap compared to the cost of LV handbags - maybe one day I will be able to afford one of those!  I also love ebay and have considered buying one of the knock off handbags from there but haven't done so yet.

Status: offline 		I like items of clothing and accessories "look good" (on me) and which I think have some "style".

In my twenties, I cared a little bit about that kind of thing (the label-status "thing"). I'll never forget the time I bought a $200 pair of white, snake-skin pumps at Saks Fifth Avenue, when (was about 28 years old), and I walked outside wearing them (I was so excited about them I wore them out of the store). It was raining outside. Within a half hour, the shoes had been completely ruined by the water and mud (snake-skin is very fragile and delicate) - and it just made me feel like I'd tossed $200 down a sewer, or something.   

Now I am in my forties, and I donate a lot more money to charity than I used to do. Spending $250 on a purse, for instance, when I have three adopted foster kids in Ethiopia through the World Vision Organization that can hardly afford to plant seeds to grow food, seems almost criminal to me, at times. 

I don't mean I never spend money on myself, but it's usually for something I've thought a lot about (I have spent money renovating my house, but that's only because I want to make a profit when I sell it and it needed rehab - it was a practical decision). I don't do a lot of impulsive shopping anymore. I've got tons of clothes (from discount stores) but seem to spend most of my time in the same skirt or jeans and tops, and probably only really need about 10% of what I've got in my closet. Hope that doesn't sound "preachy" (it's not meant to be). That stuff just isn't the "thrill" it once was (if ever it was) for me. If I'd spend money on anything for me, I think it's travel more than anything else.

My sister (the attorney) has a name for clients that spend their money on things like Mercedes and $1,000 jeans. She calls them "stupid rich people". She seems to sometimes seek them out as clients, because she thinks they have no idea (some of them) where their money goes, and some don't seem to care where it goes, she says.

I know there are wealthy people who are not like this, and some donate tons of money to good causes and also have good judgment (that's how some of them got to be wealthy- they worked hard for it, some of them), but - she apparently thinks some of them can be really dense. She sometimes say to me: "Know any stupid rich people who need a good lawyer? Send some my way..."  Ha!

I live in rural Iowa, not exactly a shopping meca. I also hate the whole mall shopping experience. Except for groceries etc., I do almost ALL of my shopping online, heck I even order my dog food online. I have made some very expensive purchases via the net and have never had any nightmarish incidents.

I know that it is not for everyone, some care should be taken, but I would be lost without it now.

Contrary to popular belief not everything that is namebrandish on Ebay is a knockoff. I always make sure the seller is reputable and has a good history. The Brahmin bag I bought was still brand new in the dust bag which was in the orgininal store packaging. The guy just had no clue what it was. I purchased a brand new Canon EOS 30D digital camera with several lenses and other assorted goodies, thru Ebay from an electronics company in NYC and it is certainly genuine Canon. It was brand new, in the sealed packaging with all of the warranty paperwork and manuals. I have also purchased many less expensive items, even art, that are of excellent quality and are exactly what they were advertised to be.

Status: offline 		I carry a Coach leather purse that was gifted to me three years ago.  It was 350.00 and I've used it every day since, allowing my other purses to hang unused in the closet.  When I clean it you can't tell that it's not new and I expect to be able to carry it for years to come.  It's soft and buttery and pleasant to the touch but quite tough.

Purses in the 10 to 100.00 range tend to fall apart rather quickly as I'm hard on clothes, shoes, accessories and the like.  I appreciate something that holds together well and this purse has done so.  I'm not usually materialistic but quality literally jumps off the rack at me (which is impressive for someone who genuinely hates to shop).  I don't think I could ever bring myself to spend 6k on a purse but I'm clear that it's because I've never been in a situation that 6k isn't a lot of money.  If money weren't an object I might spend that much, but haven't an experiential reference point to see it.  It would have to be a very high quality bag, though.

I do love my enzo shoes, though.  There is something about buttery leather that draws me...

I agree...especially about a Coach bag in particular....I find that any designer expensive bags are very well made and made to last, but the quality of a Coach bag is second to none in my book.  The leather is thick and of beautiful grade and the hardware is beyond tough.  These bags wear like iron.  Contrary to popular belief, you dont need to treat a good bag like it's made of eggshells, you treat it like it was made to be used for functionality. 
I use saddle soap on my coach leather bags and they come up beautifully with it.  And then every year or two, I touch up the corners with just a dab of shoe polish (the type in the flat can) either black, brown or whatever the color leather is, dab it on, polish it up and they just look great and last years and years. 

I also buy cheap shoes and bags too if I like them.  And I have no qualms about buying jeans in Kmart.  But I do enjoy a few designer things here and there,  and they are well worth the $$ and they last decades if cared for well and stored nicely.

Hmmm...Balenciaga is yummy.  You have excellent taste!  I would post a picture of my collection of B-Bags but I do not think this is the appropriate place.  

I say to each their own.  Everyone has their own "thing" they like to spend money on.  I pay my taxes, I give to charity, etc.  So if my "thing" is well made (no, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga are NOT made in China or in sweatshops by underpaid workers) luxury handbags, then so be it.

(Okay maybe there's a few thousand....). 

Compare that to women, and there's millions who'll scour catalogues or websites and dream of having one of these things.

I think it's a hoot.

(Now, those of you who have 60 - 100 pairs of 4+ inch high heels....you I can relate to....so long as you keep wearing 'em)

(What really pisses me off is how often she catches what I miss)

And for the record, anyone with a cursory glance looking at the wallet I bought from WalMart, would easily think it was bought from K-Mart.  So there.

Oh the glory of paying far too much for something that is glorified by the vain and idle wealthy snobs (or the ones that want to be)!  Not for me.

I do understand wanting to own something that is made of fine materials, with good craftsmanship, and looks beautiful.  I have no problem paying more for something that I know is going to last a long time and the run of the mill $20 Target jobs just don't do that.  I also believe that treating yourself to something luxurious or beautiful on occasion is a good practice, if you have the money, go for it.  

For me personally, I don't care about the label.  If I had an unlimited supply of money, I still wouldn't care about the label.  I still wouldn't spend more than say, $100 for a purse.  I wouldn't drive a car that was twice the price of your average domestic sedan, I wouldn't live in a house that had more bedrooms than people living in it, and I wouldn't spend $400 for a pair of shoes.  Not to say that any of those things aren't nice, but there's more to life than the accumulation of things and toys.  I would feel guilty spending money on things I don't need and not giving all I could to help others.

Status: offline 		I was lucky enough to say no never have untill october, someone hacked my pay pal account not once, but twice cause I have both cards on pay pal,  I was like well I want this and I can't afford it on my visa, I know I'll use discover, and they ran up about 300 400 all told in fake charges. My bank was good enough to refund me for the charges, but I have yet to hear from the discover card yet on any refunds as to fake charges.

Scamming hacking and money theft is not some "urban legend" It happens, it's quite easy to do sometimes.

Status: offline 		FelineP - Thanks for that, I didn't even *think* of that, I only had heard of scammers pretending to seel things then never delivering the product, or selling knockoffs that you don't find out about until it arrives and up close you can see it's not the genuine article...yikes.  By that same token though that could happen shopping anywhere online, so it's not something I'd let stop me altogether from using eBay eventually.  Thanks for sharing it though, and sorry to hear it happened, hopefully you'll get fully refunded for both cards, yikes

LaTigresse - I'd be willing to settle on those terms, beats the alternative which is having only myself to rely on.  If I were *that* into making my own decisions by myself solely, I wouldn't have a Master, you know?  Unfortunately, he's not one for eBay either as of yet, so I think I need a little Mistress on the side, I'm sure he won't mind *giggles*
