As for the beckhams. What an embarrassment those two are. I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Whilst they get right on my tits with their ever so perfect lives they do a lot for charity and that is never a waste.

What do you think about the chances of it being more regional so that it grows to a similar status as Ice Hockey has in some states, with perhaps California and the Southern states able to finance professional teams.

Over a very long haul, maybe ... but doubtful. The problem here (and this isn't meant to be a slam on soccer), is that the sport doesn't draw even close to our best athletes. Most top athletes here see sports as a way to pay for college, and I don't think there are very many schools that offer scholarships for men's soccer. Without top athletes, the league will never be more than a niche league, like it is now.

You watched british football recently - they aint no sissies. (I watched many of the world cup matches in full england shirt surrounded by Yanks. I also watch some of the Premier league matches - acting is a vital component of all games, the ability to be poleaxed by a shirt tug and dive over blades of grass in the penalty area ...... American football are the sissys. Agree with you there ........ Rugby players over here are the real men though. deffinitely the superior sport to watch (and play until you get to old / small / slow) Wtf is rugby football? Check the porper name of Rugby and it is Rugby Football - both Union and League, and there are some arguments that the earliest forms of "Football" bore more relation to Ruby than "Soccer" and to wind up the sissy pig skin kickers rugy player taunt them with the fact that football is actually Rugby. Of course the FA (Football Association) differs on this point with the RFU (Rugby Football Union) I think you are under the misaprhension that I am American.....I'm just living here for a while.

Sounds like my football team - languishing in the second division, last won the league in 1936, have won one cup since then - in an area of high unemployment and obviously Sunderland is a lot smaller than Chicago and the surrounding catchment area and we still get 40,000 in for a home game and take thousands to away games around the country. As said though, I take your point - a bit quick off the mark with the comments.

My my, what a fever pitch this dissention has risen to. Football vs Futbol ..as if. American Football is utterly dependant on Futbol (soccer) Until reading this thread I assumed it was similar to the minor league in baseball, for NFL place kickers. Say what you will about the glitz and glam of our #1 televised sport, you'll not dilute the beauty and grace of it's defining moment, that being an innovation known as the forward pass, resulting in what is likely the most breathtaking representation of human physicality and agility, another innovation called slow-mo, ever cast into our living rooms. A wide reciever's ascent, bobbling grasp, reception and descent into the end zone, bearing a fruitful six points, and all the while, he has no idea of what peril that descent will bring, or who awaits him with bitter acrimony below. It is a spectacle which I have witnessed countless times, and never ceases to amaze and enthrall, and beyond all the accusations of cowardice and wimpyness via pads and helmetry, the "play" represents what football is, and takes bravery, concentration, agility and skill few white men can achieve. He is the modern day knight in shining armor. Belittling him can only make you seem foolish, if not blind, and even bringing futbol into any comparative equation will establish your mindset as "easily entertained". MGD
