My my, what a fever pitch this dissention has risen to. Football vs Futbol ..as if. American Football is utterly dependant on Futbol (soccer) Until reading this thread I assumed it was similar to the minor league in baseball, for NFL place kickers. Say what you will about the glitz and glam of our #1 televised sport, you'll not dilute the beauty and grace of it's defining moment, that being an innovation known as the forward pass, resulting in what is likely the most breathtaking representation of human physicality and agility, another innovation called slow-mo, ever cast into our living rooms. A wide reciever's ascent, bobbling grasp, reception and descent into the end zone, bearing a fruitful six points, and all the while, he has no idea of what peril that descent will bring, or who awaits him with bitter acrimony below. It is a spectacle which I have witnessed countless times, and never ceases to amaze and enthrall, and beyond all the accusations of cowardice and wimpyness via pads and helmetry, the "play" represents what football is, and takes bravery, concentration, agility and skill few white men can achieve. He is the modern day knight in shining armor. Belittling him can only make you seem foolish, if not blind, and even bringing futbol into any comparative equation will establish your mindset as "easily entertained". This seems to exclude the much more common aspect of "line up a bunch of big wobbly men let them run into each other and watch the bloke at the other end of the pitch "as above" miss the ball". Then stop and swop one bunch of big wobbly men for another bunch.......only problem with American football is it stops when the action gets interesting. Make them stay on the pitch for 40 minutes, no swoping, no stopping and then we might see some fun. It might also move from a global minority sport..... LOL I like the helmets and pads, they add colour to a 3 hour endurance event (for the crowd not the players) :) American Football is about very specialist sporting prowess, kicker / defence / run and catch / throw / Football and Rugby is about a wider range of general skills and high levels of stamina and fitness.

Right, I'm always open to ideas providing they're sensible so I'll reserve judgement on this gridiron thing until a few holes are filled as follows: 1) Why do gridiron players wear what can only be described as stockings? 2) Why is there a bloke shouting out random numbers while the rest of the players get up close and personal (in their stockings)? 3) Why do they wear motorbike helmets? Any light you can shed on this will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joe Montana
