ORIGINAL: NorthernGent We've been through this. Your view is racial tension is a product of a multi-ethnic society. My view is it's a product of a lack of investment in the poorest socio-economic groups in society. I'm not prepared to go through it with you again. Let's agree to disagree. Dammit! Where am I going wrong, I drive around such areas of London, I look through the windows at widescreen plasma tvs, I see the BMWs and Mercedes in the drives, or god forbid the small hatchback with a stereo system rated in giga-watts and enough fibreglass to build a dozen or so offshore powerboats. Perhaps these people should invest in themselves rather than invest in image and designer labels. In the last week or so I have watched the police and transport staff attempt to deal with 4 people for fare evasion, 3 of those spent an awful lot of time proclaiming "you are just picking on me because I am [insert ethnicity here]" just to rub in the point all of these people appeared to be reasonably well off professional people, not street scum from whom such words would be expected. As for under investment, lets see.... Subsidised housing and council tax, Free property repairs. Free prescriptions, interest free credit with generous repayment terms, free vocational training and education (with payment for attendance and free childcare where applicable!). Please pull the other one, I know for a fact I was financially better of with 3 small things and no job than I am now as a senior professional and single. Crunch the numbers yourself, pretend you have a partner and a sprog or two, see how much better of you would be (odds on you will be getting more back from the state than you would be putting in by way of direct taxation) I say the problem is over-investment, by making the welfare system so easy to abuse and by offering so much with it there is little incentive to actually do much at all. And to finish off, its called racial tension (by your own admission) not socio-economic tension, surely the label alone proves the point? After all you cannot have racial tension between members of one race (yes it can be sub-divided ad-infinitum, but however you do it the label is still racial) edited because my sellping was carp!
