What a waste of talent he has been the last few years- more fashion than football.  But it is a nice retirment package, LA is warm and sunny, and maybe, just maybe, the U.S. will at least glance at football...ummm...soccer.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Oh you luck Americans!! (1/11/2007 2:23:54 PM)

It's yet another fallout of the TomKat union!

pahunkboy -> RE: Oh you luck Americans!! (1/11/2007 2:43:46 PM)

thats odd. a few stars move to EU as they feel it is safer for their kids then here in the US.

This guy must have heard the rich are not taxed here any longer.  glunkkkkkkk.

pahunkboy -> RE: Oh you luck Americans!! (1/11/2007 2:46:15 PM)

PS: soccor or what outside the US is referred to as "football" never took off here.

i scratch my head when i see teh hoodlum stampedes over the matches. now take american football- and even a non fan is tuned in during the superbowl- some even watch just for teh commercials.

the Philly eagles had a chabce this time...

Football (world type) is one of the biggest sports for children / youth in the US and growing faster than any of the other sports. Also with the change is demographics it will continue to grow faster. The Latinos tend to prefer Soccer to the other sports. Beckhams financial advisers have seen a way of making sure his brand continues when his playing days are over, if he becomes the idol of millions of US (& particulaly Latino) children over the next 4 years he will then be able to continue making a mint for the next 10 until they have a home grown star of equal sature. Add that to the Chinese and Ja'panese follwoing he has and you will have the Beckham brand being the biggest name in the Worlds 3 fastest growing Soccer markets.

He may sound stupid but his finances say otherwise.

At each of our manufacturing plants, as soon as there are enough latino workers they form a Company soccer team, but none of the sites have an American Football or Baseball team.

My take on soccer:

Great fun to play, deadly dull to watch. [8|]

they have said this for a few years now.  no offense to those who celebrate the sport- just a quirk the it isnt the rage in the US 2007, as in much of the world. go figure.

pahunkboy, I don't think it'll ever take off in the US. It's a cultural issue. You need high scoring games full of perceived drama, cheerleaders, popcorn and the rest of it.......you're a nation of drama queens (excuse the pun).

Football is not about that.......it's about loyalty to your team and your town/city. Win, lose or draw we go back next week because it has substance, it means something. You need glory, excitement, winning........we don't need that, we take pride in being loyal through whatever is thrown at us. Different national charactertistics.

Anyway, how's your parrot doing these days....still furiously wanking himself into a coma?

pahunkboy -> RE: Oh you luck Americans!! (1/12/2007 12:29:08 PM)

Hi Northern Gent,

LOL- parrot wanking. LOL. Well my health has been rotten lately. My sister suggested doing a colon flush- so I am embarking on that- a 21 day program. I did one last year- and it was quite effective. The colon can hold 5-40 lbs of crud in the body.  Alot of stuff we consume- needs to leave the colon- as it turns toxic. Garbage in- garbage out.

Also- I went to the store and got real food. lots of fresh vegatables.

Im hoping I can whip abck into shape.

Thanks for the shout!!!  :-D

NorthernGent -> RE: Oh you luck Americans!! (1/12/2007 12:33:33 PM)

Good luck with it all. I'm sure you'll be as right as rain in no time :-)

Well at least they dont stop playing every 10 secs and change the team every few minutes, Offensive This to Defensive That and wear a crash helmet. American Football.
or
Expend more effort chewing gum than playing anything. Baseball.

Footballers have raised trying to kick lumps out of one another to a fine art though !
Cricket, now there's a sport, its not impossible for nothing whatsoever to happen for a whole day. Then the game ends in a draw.

NG must be slipping, I felt sure he was going to moan about Beckham's salary.

Yeah....give it a little time, Mark Burnett will create a reality TV program that centers around him. I'd rather watch Zidane headbutt someone ; }

Dtesmoac -> RE: Oh you luck Americans!! (1/12/2007 5:48:52 PM)

Went to see an American football match, the razzle etc was fun but everytime the games started to get going and I'd worked out where the ball was the game stopped. I think if they had to stick with the same team and make the next play within 30 seconds it would be a good sport........ (at this point I must confece to being a Rugby rather than Soccer fan). I made it through to the third quarter before retiring to a bar........

Soccer may never rival American Football, baseball, basketball, Nascar etc in the IUSA, but as the demographics change (increased Latino) etc then it will become a bigger market in the US. Also think of the difference in sporting prowese that is required - stamina, balance and skill for soccer, vs the absolute specialism in American Football.
In a market of 300 million (USA), 1 billion (china) 100 million (Japan) and old becks only has to make a break through of modest proportions to gaurantee a few more million in the bank. O yes and isn't there something called Hollywood near his new team...... I wonder if that had soemthing to do with his and his wife's choice of new locations?

Gah, why does Los Angeles have to be the retirement home of overpaid athletic burnouts?

First Gretsky becomes the primadonna that sucked the life force out of King's payroll, now this.

Sinergy

p.s. Football (not american) is a lot more fun to watch than that wussy padded and helmetted men huddling and patting each other on the butt's sport we have here in the United States, but I tend to prefer the naked violence of semi-professional hockey.

edited because the makes more sense than to in the sentence.

You need to google 'Chicago Cubs' before you make such a claim again.

Haha you say that like we haven't had to put up with them already! The are in our media too.... a spice girl (yes they were BIG over here I am sad to admit)and a world famous football (soccer) star, one kid named Brooklyn any others no idea, they'll fit right in L.A.
Bend it like Beckham was a movie over here too. America is so obsessed with beauty, talent, and all around fame that we have to be nosey about British pop icons and all Royalty.. don't even get me started.

No I don't. If you've a point to make you need to make it. I'll stand corrected if/where persuaded otherwise.

It's hard to know who's the worst for this sort of thing. Here, the royal family can't have a shit in peace without someone appearing from underneath the toilet water to take a picture. One of the princes' girlfriend is now followed everywhere, she leaves the front door and she's chased down the street by camermen. I mean, what are they expecting? and who cares? I was watching the news the other night and there was a bit about his girlfriend and in the background they had pictures of her and diana with similar glances/expressions. Now, what I took from that is the press are reporting that william is looking to marry a version of his mum! As much as I can't stand the idea of a monarchy running my country I think that sort of news/reporting is beyond the pale. The newsman also said a camerman sold a picture of his girlfriend (a young 20 years old lass) on holiday in her bikini for 2 million quid (which I suppose tells the story of why camermen are chasing her down the street) - I mean, what sort of malfunctioned, distorted world do we live in?

The royal family have this extraordinary ability to put their foot in it. charles was heard saying (he thought his mic was switched off) "I can't stand that fucking man" when about to questioned by a newsman and the one who's married to the queen actually asked an African statesman if "they still chucked spears over there". Time to lop a few heads off and put them on spikes if you ask me.

As for the beckhams. What an embarrassment those two are. If there's any justice in this world they'll either settle in the US and stay there or they'll get eaten by a croc while over there. Either way, here's hoping they don't come back.

All true, but that doesn't really mean that a professional league of quality, is in the cards. Softball is huge in the United States. I think soccer will be the same way ... something for kids and company teams.
