This is actually a topic I have discussed many times with my dom.  He prefers to be called Master the majority of the time ... however ... to me it feels so redundant to call him Master all the time ... and after doing it a fair amount of times ... it begins to seem cheesy to me (I know that sounds bad, but my mind is just weird like that).  So I like to rotate between daddy and sir.

I was recently punished and couldn't call him anything but Master for 2 straight weeks ... and I was in agony, lol.  But here comes my question out of all this ... the second thing him and I spend a lot of time discussing ... do I HAVE to call all Doms i speak with "Sir" right off the bat?  Or can I do that once I become comfortable with them?

P.S. I am one of those over analyzers mentioned in an earlier reply, hehe.

I believe that one is up to your Dom. How does HE want you to treat others in that position? I personally think it is a good idea to convey respect to anyone in that position unless they do something that makes them unrespectable. Mostly this is your Dom's preference, if there is none... then it's up to you I suppose.

I personally feel that it is unnecessary to use both.  It doesn't sound quite right to me, and if the Master knows that the slave respects them, then why need to prove it with more pronounced addressing?  Just my opinion.

Only one person is called Master and that is my Master. If at an lifestyle event I use Sir or Maam until told otherwise.

I only ask my sub to refer to me solely as "Sir".  I do not like it when anyone else calls me by anything other than my first name (although I do appreciate that they call me Sir, Sir Kenin or Kenin until they know my first name, which I send in my first email).

Sir or Master serve their perpouse well from My PoV. My girl has a prefrence for calling Me Master rather than Sir so that is what she uses.

"Master, Sir" would smack to Me a little to overblown... to the point of parody. Rather than being 'respectful' is is edging toward mockery in the vein of calling someone "Lord, Master uberDomly God of all creationdom" etc.

What anyone else calls Me I don't much mind EXCEPT Master. Only from MY girl is it accepteble.... "Master Raven" is fine from a Gorean girl (And would be expected from what SHE claims to be and the protocol she is supposed to follow) and Sir is quite acceptable from others who wish to make a point of their respect.

Other than that Raven is quite acceptable.

i was taught to call any top, either ma'am or sir, and my master is always master. i would think master sir sounded a bit over done and pretentions, but who am i to say whats comfortable for others.

Tal and greetings

The Gorean view is by tradition any slave address a Free as "Master" or "Mistress".  I only require my slave to address me as "Master".  For others as long as it is respectful, I have been addressed as "Sir" which is fine with me.

I wish you well

I think all topdommasters should be addressed as SirMasterDomlyOne.
Yes, I am joking.

My slave calls me Master, I won't let her overuse the word Sir. Makes it sound too military.

I have spoken with a few "Dom/Masters" on this subject and I would like to see what "YOU" have to say about this.

Some feel that to be addressed as Master is very respectful and others feel that to be addressed as Master, Sir is even more respectful. However one person brought it to my attention that to address a Master as Master, Sir is a form of "Contradiction" perhaps this is so and perhaps not, what do you think?

I think someone sat down and said, "How can I make simple concepts as complicated as possible?" You should establish protocol that makes you feel the most respect.  If you need to be called DOMINANTWOLFSBANEMASTERFULMASTEROFTHEUNIVERSE to feel adequately respected, then that's what you should demand in a relationship.  Master, Sir kind of sounds like overkill to me.  But who am I to judge? Who cares if it is a contradiction?  You're allowed to contradict yourself. I resisted all attempts to be made to address others as Sir or Ma'am as a child.  It's not something I do in my day to day life.  Sir is something reserved for my Dominant.  It has made answering questions with a Yes Sir interesting, because it is still very much foreign to me.  When I answer questions like that, it is like someone is shining a spotlight on our power exchange. So yeah.  Whatever floats your boat?

Dear slavesrs, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Being a product from the 1950's, every day language and etiquette use to those who were adults or those of authority, e.g. police, teachers, etc.; were addressed as sir and or ma'am.

Around my Gay Leathermen friends, acquaintances--I'm titled in a Dominant manner.  Some prefer calling me a Master.  Some prefer calling me a SIR.  Some prefer calling me Lady Hugs.  It depends on when they know me.  But, I don't have hang ups on titles or labels, as long as it is respectful.

As far as using Master, SIR/Sir in the same breath; it is redundant.

Personally, I often address Dominants and submissive/slaves as sir and or ma'am in conversation.  Being respectful is where my spirit dwells.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

~Quicky~

Generally it is “Oh emperor god, the benevolent creator, ooh thou art so magnificent… we are really impressed here… thou hand is which gives me life, the reason for living… etc… etc…”

However as a rule of thumb, whatever etiquette his/her “owner” dictates is appropriate. If I don’t own you Loki is fine. Being addressed as Master is a very personal thing, and implies some level of ownership. Sir is a title of respect, Flame proofing on, which should be earned. So again I say Loki is fine until my actions define me as “Sir” and that respect is earned.

As for me extending the respect of Sir or Ma’am to a fellow Dom/me, I do it without thought. It is a given title of respect until they show me otherwise. Of course familiarity, hopefully, moves us to a first name basis, I anticipate the reverse with a sub/slave. Moving from the familiar name, Loki, to a formal term of respect, Sir.

Of course I notoriously look at the world backwards so YMMV.

Such things are matters of preference, of course. I personally prefer a girl who is so inclined to address me as Sir; it is a universal and accepted form of addressing a male with respect. Master is a far more personal and hallowed term to me. Only those who have earned the privilege of using it with me are allowed.

With that said, the idea of referring to a Master as Master, Sir not only seems redundant, but inappropriate indeed, considering how I view the import of the two terms. In referring to her Master, it is well enough in my mind that a girl simply speaks "master" from her pretty lips.

the answer to this is simple,

All Doms are refered to as Sir, only the one that you recognize as your one true Master is refered to as Master.
