While that is a lovely tale about your family, there seems to be an implication that the only part of this whole sordid tale you care about is your own flesh and blood.

And how many times have we heard about Julia's soon to be draftable?  Another brother is still on active duty and has not been.  He could recieve orders tomorrow, but at Christmas, he agreed we just can't walk away from what we stepped in.

You seem to take a great deal of pride in sniping at the efforts of other people attempting to do something about the world they live in, whereas I do not ever recall you sharing anything you personally have done for anybody else.

I may have mentioned giving food to the homeless at some point, but generally, you won't hear my blowing my own horn.  What I give and do is between me and the Universe.

Some people are out in the world doing something to try to correct the things they see need correcting, others are sitting at their keyboards trashing the efforts of other people.

You are absolutely right, WyrdRich.  The brother you threw up for out of several years of stress when he got home really is the only person who has any importance in your reality.

Also, if you read it carefully, I did not insinuate that you never leave your keyboard.  In stated that when you are at your keyboard you seem to take tremendous pleasure in trashing the efforts of other people (like Cindy Sheehan) who are trying to do something to change their world.

If you are trying to insinuate that I spend my entire life at a keyboard, my only response is that (unlike you) I am intelligent enough to have gotten a high paying job that gives me plenty of free time to do things like build furniture, hang out on the internet, etc.

I only want to inform anyone who reads the above and feels inspired to act, to check out the website www.anysoldier.com.  it is an excellent resource:  of what to send, how to send, how to find someone to send to.  you can select from servicemen and women stationed all over the world.

I would, in fact, challenge each person that has contributed to this thread to take 5 minutes, find a serviceman at this website, and send them something, anything, to acknowledge their service and make their day a little better.

Let's make sure that link is at the top of a page, shall we?

If you want to be sure you are actually helping, put together a nice care package.  They appreciate canned soup, baby wipes, DVD's, books and good 2-ply toilet paper.  Since you don't seem to know anybody who has chosen to serve their country, pick a unit and address the package to 'First Sergeant' and the unit number. He'll make sure it goes to someone who could use it.

Thanks for the site, I went ahead and played soldier roulette for a few calling cards.

I did have an issue with the sites advertising 8 dollars worth of stuff for 130 dollars, but my issues with those who capitalize on the tragedy of others is not something I am going to inflict on those in Iraq.

you're welcome...thank you for accepting the challenge.

one of the things I like best about this site is that it makes a good point about supporting troops...it doesn't have to be about money.  sending a card or a letter is just as welcome.

There was a site that had a fund to help families buy armor for their kids, since our government sent them over there without any. I wonder if someone has that site. I am sure they would rather have Kevlar vests than cookies. Although having both would be a boon

please excuse the following hijack...
homemade cookies are actually discouraged nowadays...soldiers are cautioned against eating anything that isn't factory sealed, unless it's from someone they know.  sign of the times, I guess.

As I understand it, they hire by lottery down there.  Smart.  I actually have marketable skills, so that when 40 guys show up to apply for one job, I get it without hitting the numbers.

I don't trash, Sinergy, I defend.  Unless you are teaching those women to see if a rapist will negotiate for a blowjob instead, I suspect you understand that.

I can point out several statements on this thread i would take as trashing people

You insinuate that people who are pro-peace are anti-troops

When we say we do things for the troops you slam us for that

You have done nothing but slam them yourself as you insinuate we are

And then you insult people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country... a son or daughter killed in action...

and what part of this is not bashing?

If they need fucking CARE packages, then the leadership is fucking incompetent. What will we spend on the 48,000 Troop Surge? 9 Billion Dollars over 3 month? 3 Billion Dollars a month / 48,000 troops = 62500/troop/month in expenses or $2080/troop/day.

You're seriously telling me, that with a budget of TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS A DAY PER PERSON, that they're properly led and STILL NEED CARE PACKAGES?

What would Donald Trump say to that kind of management?

On a related note, your understanding is incorrect.

Thank you for the snarky aspersions at my marketability, I was making six figures as a computer systems expert before finally doing what I had to do to get into the union.  Now I am making six figures reading "Why is Sex Fun" and expressing my morpheme.

My union job is far more enjoyable and life affirming than modifying kernel parameters, building web servers, configuring networks, and managing firewalls.

But enjoy your time working for some tie-wearing dolt (unless you are said tie-wearing dolt) who would rather tell people like me to only buy one I/O controller board when it died, rather than the two I wanted to buy so the 300 coders would not sit idle the next time it went out.

luckydog1 -> RE: Jihad Jane??? (2/2/2007 10:09:53 PM)

Cindy Sheehan did not give her Son to anything.  She sacrificed nothing.  Her Son joined as an adult, against her wishes.  And then he Re-enlisted to go back over there.  Cindy Sheehan was anti war and a left wing activist before the Iraq war started.  Her son has nothing to do with her views at all.  She has desecrated her Son and what he was willing to fight and die for though, in an attempt to push her own agenda.  She deserves nothing but scorn.  She is a disgusting old woman.

juliaoceania -> RE: Jihad Jane??? (2/2/2007 11:20:36 PM)

You know, I doubt she cares what you think

Cindy Sheehan and her story marked the turning point in public opinion about this war, and that has all the war mongers with their panties in a wad....

... nothing worse than armchair warrriors that have no problem expending the blood of someone else's kids... ya know what? I have zero respect for that. I have the world of respect for Cindy Sheehan...

The more you insult her the smaller you look

Wouldn't it be appropriate if the Bush Family took the same risks as the Sheehan family did?

I guess the Mission just isn't important enough for a Bush child to serve.

And it's not like either of the girls would be in a combat position.

I'm confused why people give credit to the opinion of people that lost someone in war, or any tragedy. I feel for her loss, but it doesn't give her any greater knowledge or understanding of what is going on. It gave her a greater understanding of loss, but not of Iraq. As far as Cindy Sheehan turning the war support around, I highly doubt she has had more than a marginal effect. That seems to have occured as a consequence of the perception that Iraq is unwinnable. Whether sheehan spoke a word it wouldn't have changed that. She really in my view  just a symbol for those that thought the same to begin with. Have you met anyone that was swayed by her? I haven't. I know people that think differently now because it is dragging on and doesn't seem to be getting better.

I mean if somebodies son died in a car wreck, I wouldn't think there opinion on cars or traffic laws any greater because of it. If someones son died in a fire I wouldn't hold their opinion on fire laws to a greater esteem. I'd feel for them, but not hold their opinion up higher. But apparently knowledge and creditability by relationship is popular though baseless.

I'm not trying to argue, here, but why exactly is her opinion important?

Because the leaders who told half-truths, misstatements and outright lies to START the war, have children who do NOT serve, and the families don't take the same risks as the Sheehan family did.

That's being a hypocritical rat, but hey, does anyone REALLY expect honor from a Bush?

I dont really appreciate it when people say I am opposed to the troops.  I was in a store down south and the person in front of me was trying to buy (a lot of) beer.  He told the cashier that he and his buddies were shipping out to Iraq the next day.  His ATM card didnt work.  So they sat puzzled at the register.  I told the cashier to put it on my tab.

The guy asked how he could thank me.

I told him to have him and all his friends come home safe.

Sinergy

I dunno, it could be legit, but "I'm shipping out tomorrow" is the oldest scam in the service.  Troops have been using that line to get laid and drunk for a LONG time.

thompsonx -> RE: Jihad Jane??? (2/3/2007 9:17:00 AM)

Just some thoughts not directed at anyone in particular.  It would seem to me that the amount of money that is being spent on this fiasco should be enough to cover everything the troops need.  Clearly it does not cover anywhere near what they need but it does seem to cover all that the war mongers need.
The support the troops mantra is just so much crap.  If you send thugs out on a thug mission then say I do not support the thug mission but I support the thugs doing it is disingenious at best.  If some do not like my choice of the word thug then how else would you charactarize someone who takes that which is not theirs by force.  What patriotic mission are these people on?  How are they making me or my country safer?  We support dictators all over the world but somehow this particular dictator is worth spending billions of dollars to dethrone while the taxpayers support the "good dictators"
As for the big change in politics as indicated by the last election ...how many seats actually changed hands.  If the new congress were serious they would just cut off funding for the war and the troops would have to come home.  Let Haliburton get their own people home or fight their own war.
