should it be a requirement for citizenship in America to be able to speak, read, write and understand English?

i had thought that this was already a requirement, but cannot find a reference to it.

this is not to say that people who speak other languages have to give up those languages, but i think that we should all be able to understand each other more than we currently do.

Do they need to be proficient in the English language before taking a citizenship test? Or when they 'get off the boat'? I actually need a bit more detail in order to really answer.

There have been numerous threads about this Mike, and your apolitics are well known, had you turned the TV to other than the lottery channel, you would have known that the legislatures have been embroiled in this off and on for 6 to 8 years now---but that would have been political in nature, and you would have switched that off-----

So, for the other untold millions in the United States this is rather common knowledge that english is not the juris lingua franca of us, and you should be able to glimpse that when you go down to renew your papers at social services or security or whatever and see all those squiggly lines that indicate kanjii and arabic or by the habla espanol in the extra paragraphs.

That, Mike; is serious.

i think that, before they are granted citizenship, they should be able required to know at least the fundimentals of English...at least they could take classes beforehand. (at least once they get into the country)

give them a certain time period, say...a year, to learn passable English in order to remain here

I think it should be. I run into too many people who don't speak English, or not well enough. If I were to move somewhere I would expect to have to learn the language as a common courtesy, as well as proficient enough to communicate with others in my job and my day to day activities. I worked for Bellsouth for a while, do you have any clue how many people told me "I wish they wouldn't transfer your job overseas, they are the nicest people, but I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THEM." Usually because their english wasn't good or thick accents, and believe me, the phone doesn't make it any easire to understand thick accents. But I am in favor of all those who wish to be US citizens learning to speak english, and proficiently please!

Who would pay for these classes, would they be provided for them at no cost?
What exactly counts for 'passable' English?

You are asking a question with so many variables that it is next to impossible to answer via a message board.

clear and simple, i think that, if anyone is going to apply for citizenship here, than they should learn English...they need to have at least a grade school level knowledge of the language (4-6 grades at least)

the courses would be provied free to them as a requirement to being a citizen of this country.

So from your view you want American taxpayers to pay for new immigrants to learn at least grade 4 English?
That is a part of why I chose 'No'.

regardless who pays for it, i still think that, if they cannot put in the effort to learn English, they should be deported
