ORIGINAL: Emperor1956 Level...congrats and good luck. Now, about all the abuse people are posting on "statins". In fact, some people can't tolerate one of the many out there. A very few can't tolerate ANY statin. But the fact is, if you can tolerate the drug and you are a cholesterol-former, they will enhance and prolong your life. For cost reasons, most drug plans (and therefore most physicians) will start someone on lipitor or crestor. This is the normal protocol. If the drug is not well tolerated, then the usual protocol is to move to one of the other, more expensive drugs. The fact is that cholesterol formation is a significant problem in most adult men and in many women, too. And if you throw cholesterol, you run a significant risk of cardiac consequences. Reduce the cholesterol formation, reduce the plaque. You need a healthy liver to process statins, and therefore liver enzyme tests are recommended when you begin therapy. It was protocol to test these enzymes yearly, but such a large percentage of the population has successfully used these drugs without problem that the recent ABIM protocols do not require regular liver enzyme testing. For what its worth, I've been on a statin for 13 years, have had no ill side effects, and have rock-solid LDL and HDL levels. Significant reduction in plaque formation, as well. So you pays your money and you takes your chances...but PLEASE talk to a physician, and not a wanna-be advice giver on collarme. E Hi E, and thanks for the good thoughts. Statins work wonders in lowering cholesterol, and they seem to do perhaps their most beneficial work in reducing inflammation in blood vessels. But I do believe the incident of problems is higher than what is normally reported. Former NASA astronaut, and MD, Duane Graveline had serious statin-induced amnesia, prompting him to start a website and write a book on the dangers of the drugs; a number of other physicians have spoken out against the damage that can occur as well, but most all of them do agree that someone at high risk, unable to lower cholesterol to an acceptable level, may need them. If my cardio results come back bad, I may have to at least give thought to trying another statin. The crestor I won't go back to, and I'm not sure if my body would tolerate the Vytorin better. I was on Lescol once, a few years ago, and it didn't seem to harm me, but I didn't stay on it terribly long, either. "Dr. Graveline: I have discovered that the stronger statin drugs such as Lipitor can be associated with profound cognitive disturbances in some patients. There are now thousands of patient case reports of amnesia, forgetfulness, confusion and disorientation, at times severe and incapacitating. With some cases lasting months and years, another very important point is that cognitive side effects can appear after months and years of seemingly trouble-free use." http://www.medicationsense.com/articles/april_june_04/graveline.html
