Here is a question that I've been wondering about for some time. How much time do you spend practising your craft. I ask this because I spend between 1 to 2 hours a day . I practise with my single tail about 30 to 45min. a day. Then when ever I watching TV I seem to have some rope in my hands working on new knots or new ideas. I was just wondering if this was normal,(for people like us anyway ). Or am I just obsessive. Thanks for your time.

I wonder if that is like practicing medicine. Why would you want to see someone who was practicing medicine? Bring me that fuk'r that mastered medicine.

I don't practice per se every day but if I have a particular skill I am trying to master I do practice it frequently.  Many of the other things I do I have reached that level and play with it frequently enough not to lose the talent.

Knots are something I will do from time to time while watching TV.  But it's rather hard with ums around to bring out the bullwhip lol

Exactly.

I fail to see why you feel the need to practice. Are you that bad with ropes and whips?

No, you are not obsesive. or at least you are not more obsesive about this than me.
Practice makes perfection.

Whipping I practive before each scene on my own.  I also go through everything, practive knotts and everything usually before a scene then I actually mediate (okay yeah thats a little weird).  On a day-to-day basis though I really dont put much effort forth... its usually only a couple of hours a week going over everything.

Depends on how necessary it is for day to day usage, how quickly I take to it, and whether I've just started or not.

For example, could you say that when I do a cross stitch, am I practicing cross-stitch or just doing it?  I could spend 4 hours on the stitching, but then 20 hours on the finishing because of the details and having to go back and fix mistakes.

Time is a pointless indicator really of experience.

whip, I'm not sure what you are asking. On the one hand you ask how often does one practice their craft. But in your examples, it is practicing your skills. Now skills are part of your craft, of course, but only part.

Whenever you are talking about learning new skills, like whipping or fireplay or whatever, I would practice until I felt comfortable I could do it properly. If it was not something I did regularly, I would practice periodically to keep my ability at the appropriate level. I think any Master who cares about the wellbeing of their slave would do no less.

The other part of your craft is the art of domination. Now some might call that just a different kind of skill, and it might be for them. For others it is an innate part of their personality. It is for me. That doesn't mean I don't continue to practice. In a sense I practice this kind of thing constantly; it is part of my every day life.

Namaste, Sir Dominic

One of my favorites is my masturbation technique---
I try to get in a couple of hours a day on that alone.
Typing suffers, of course.

I'll practice on what I need to until I get it down.
Hands on experience is the best.
It tends to bore me practicing on myself or the
"Living Room Furniture" after awhile.

Have you not ever wondered why the couchs in
some peoples home look so rough?

Unlike some of the Doms here, I wasnt born with a whip and paddle in each hand so I do have to practice and work on my own skills.

However, I dont practice at all as of late since I have very little free time do to working two jobs.

When I did practice, it was mostly rope bondage techinques and I would say once every few days for a couple of hours. Mostly when I watch TV.

Flogging is the other thing I practiced to work on my aim. I made a target using a pillow and a black marker and focused on accuracy with different techinques. Whenever I had a day off and had all my chores done, I would spend a good 30-40 minutes flogging.

I'm just not at a point where I feal like branching out into whips or needles.

Before I play, I spend some time the day before freshing up on anything I am planning on doing. Tieing and retieing any bondage knots or techinques so they are fresh in my mind and using my flogger/crop/paddle so they feal comfortable in my hands.

If the skill is something new to me, I practice it until I have a sense that I'm doing well enough to use it with a person. Then I use it in a scene, and I evaluate my performance to determine whether I need to work more, and if so, what I need to do. I'm at that stage with a snake whip now--I use it in scenes, but I'd like to be more precise. When I started working with it, I was pretty excited, and I spent about a half hour a day. Sometimes it's a bit like masturbation, actually--it's self-play.

I'm confident, by now, in many of my skills. In some cases I find it necessary to keep "in shape" as it were. For example, I can cane well, but my accuracy decreases if I don't hit things with canes at least once monthly. It's more fun to cane a person, but if I haven't done so for a while, I'll get them out and beat up a pillow to make sure I can hit what I want. In other cases, once I've learned to use an implement, it's not possible to improve without a live bottom. My approach to the TENS unit is an example of this. I know how to attach electrodes, I understand safety, I know what each setting does and how they might be used in relation to one another, and I know how to use the controls on the unit. As I've used it in more scenes with different bottoms in a variety of ways, I've gotten better at it and, as a result, more confident in its use--but I couldn't have gained those skills without having actual penises, actual labia, and actual screams to work with. Mental/emotional play is another example of this--I can think about it and come up with ideas without a submissive around, but I can only develop evidence-based conclusions by observing responses. If "practice" means something you do alone, I don't practice most things. But if "practice" is defined by its results--keeping skills active, improving the quality of my play--then I practice an awful lot. It's just mixed up with sex and fun.

But Whipofdoom--why does it matter how much *I* play by myself? If you're enjoying it, by all means, knot while you watch TV, swing your whips around for hours each day. I stop when it's not fun or interesting, and I think that's the principle you should apply to your actions, not a semi-arbitrary time limit.

I don't think you are too obsessive, especially where it comes to the single tail.  I practice about two hours per week, on my 4 foot snake and on my 6 foot bull.

As I'm sure you've discovered, you simply can't be too good with a whip; the cracker moves too fast, and there are too many variables to control it to a gnat's ass on every stroke.  But, the more often you practice, the less likely you are to do serious damage.  Also, the less likely you are to try something that is beyond your skill level.  I encourage you to keep at it.

Thanks for all the answers. Some of them were quite insightful. Others I admit scare me. The fact that 20% of the replies I received say, Why practise, or if you practise you must suck.
Tells me that a large portion of the "Doms" here have broken their clue phones. Do you really think that the best way to learn a new skill is to just try it on some unsuspecting sub. Do you really think that since you are some kind of Pompous High Lord Domly Dom that give you the right to harm others? Now I don't know who to feel sorry for. You or the poor sub who has the misfortune of playing with you.
