ORIGINAL: caitlyn Well no shit ... we didn't sell them circe 2000 gear, because we sold them in the 70's. My understanding, is the former President Nixon made this deal, which was fulfilled by former President Ford, and at the time sold, these planes were state of the art. My understanding is that the terms of the deal, was the the Shah was going to contribute heavily to the YF-18 program, and was going to build a small aircraft carrier in the United States. The last part of that plan was given the Ayatollah. All that said, the whole point of mentioning it in the first place, was that selling upgrades and parts to these planes, would be something of value to hold out as a carrot to the Iranians. They were not the top of the line fighters at the time, caitlyn. The United States might sell the plane. But what makes the plane dangerous is not it's flying capability in the modern world, it is all the defense paraphenalia for dealing with IR threats, Radar threats, Command and Control software. Etc., that the US military straps on it. We do this for a specific reason; we want to be able to win if we ever go to war against that plane. I was reading in Popular Mechanics today about an anti-IR missile defense. Apparently, warplanes in the US now have a laser which shoots at the nose of an IR missile which screws up it's guidance by giving it something hotter (the laser heats up the glass) to aim at. So by the time the missile realizes it's hot spot is over ----------> there, it doesnt have the juice to get to the target. Sinergy
