Colleges/Universities have alot of Master degrees, maybe we should petition them to offer a Master of BDM degree as well as the Associate and Bachelor degrees. :O

There a lot of people out there who slap on the title of slave or sub. Nothing makes them what they are except having the corresponding partner. There isn't a training school, there isn't a university - though a lot of people are happy to scam you and take your money. You can be taught by other more experienced dominants or masters, but they won't get a nice plaque to hang on the wall.

I don't think you will be able to get a good answer to your question because there doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule to what makes a master or a mistress except that they have a slave or sub. Some are loving, some are cruel.

As for the fiction thing, I don't get where you are coming from. I didn't learn about the lifestyle from fiction and fiction didn't help me realize that I am submissive. I read some porn that told me what aroused me sexually but stories that included the lifestyle never really appealed to me and they still don't. Serving my dominant satisfies me and makes me happy but it's rather boring for me to read about someone else doing it. I mean, making a sandwich is not the most exciting thing in the world.

Answering 1 queston leads to many more. I have seen many people that say 'hey look i am a master". Then they say they are a switch or whatever pleases them that day.
Webster defines a Master as "one who owns slaves"
Today its illegal to own a slave in the USA. So the rich call them servents.
I think that if you Own a slave that you control and do it to the best of your ability, keeping her happy to serve you,and expanding her knowledge on serving you daily along with learning her also then you have a true Master/slave relationship.
Filled with love and mutual respect for each others role in the relationship.
Now don't even mention that dumbass word 'contract' to Me .

I think this is a kind of "how long is a piece of string" type questions. Masters and of course Mistresses mean different things to different people.

Im a Dom. and have been called master by subs and slaves Ive not spoken to before, I think its a convention in gor that male Dominants are called "Master" as a mark of respect, but to answer the question, as I understand it, You are a Master or Mistress if you have your own sub or slave. Otherwise you have no reason to expect to be be refered to in that formal way.

Titles,sir,lord,master,things I will not use,hence a simple name.If I am worthy of a title,then it is upto whom I am with to label me so.I will not impose a title upon myself,I am simply Aneirin until another decides I am worthy of something more to them.
