1.  How old is your dictionary?  Words change, grow, evolve.

2.  Do not stop at a dictionary when trying to discover the meaning of a word.  Look up the words in the definition, in the etymology; check additional dictionaries, encyclopedias; other resources.

3.  While anybody can edit Wikipedia, edits are not published until checked.  Most entries are cited with support documentation.  (gawd, can you imagine otherwise???)

4.  Any SINGLE reference could contain a mistake...do your research.

Thank you, KL, TC.    Yes, a slur by any other name…is still a slur

I still don't understand the wiki hate.  I wouldn't use it for a research paper, but I often find good links there and useful references as well.  I agree, Bearless, find more than one source, broaden your horizons.

Katy,
anyone can edit a wikipedia definition.  That is why i never find it a creditable source.  i would find that reason enough not to reference it.

Bear i use the one online.  i also have one next to me but to actually try to use it in an argument i look at Webster's online.  Very simple and easily used.  Why do people want to argue something that is easily researched and found they are wrong.    i am not a rocket scientist but i do know how to do basic research.

The word "wetback" became widely used when the United States became involved in a military operation known as Operation Wetback.  Post World War II, millions of Mexicans came to the US as the demand for cheap agricultural laborers increased.  Between 1944 and 1954, known as the "decade of the wetback," the number of illegal Mexican alien workers swimming across the Rio Grande to the US increased.  As a result, in 1954 Operation Wetback got under way as a national reaction against illegal immigration.  In 1954 INS agents discovered over 1 million illegal immigrants and many were deported to Mexico.  Some even with their American born children.  Many also fled back due to fear of potential violence.

We all know the etymology of the term "wetback", which is a derogatory term for "an illegal Mexican immigrant or worker who crosses the Rio Grande into the United States, sometimes swimming to get across.  One dictionary states the word originated in 1929, and another states the 1940s.  Regardless of where, how, or who originated it....it is still derogatory and expresses animosity.

Texancutie, correct on that, it refer's to anyone who crossed the Rio Grande.
Now, if I crossed the Rio Grande illegally instead of through a legal Port of Entry ,....yup, I'd be a Wetback!
I'd also be guilty of a Federal Felony and subject to arrest!
It's *the act* of crossing illegally.
And, I don't need to use "wetback" to express animosity or disgust to any illegal alien. That word would be kind of "mild" to me anyway.
I guess some people think that we should "feel sorry" for illegal aliens for whatever reason. I don't.
I've called INS on two Irish illegal aliens in Boston and they were deported.
They were no fuckin good, criminals.

Minnetar, "German" is a Nationality.
But most Germans belong to the Ethnic grouping of "Saxon."

People forget, it's not against the law to "offend" people!

minnetar -> RE: Immigration crackdown, its about time. (5/20/2007 6:07:07 PM)

Popeye,
Read the definition from Webster's.  You keep trying to pertain it to the crossing of the Rio Grande.  That was the history of the word not the definition.  How many times do i have to say this because i am being redundant.

I read it in Websters.
What's your question?
It says "Mexican".
What's the problem? They miss the fact that anyone who crosses the Rio Grande illegally is a wetback.
Two guys crossing the Rio Grande illegally, one a "Mexican" one from Guatemala.
Does Webster mean to say that *only* the "Mexican" is a "wetback" but the Guatemalian (isn't?)
Mexicans aren't the only illegal aliens who cross that border, are they?
That doesn't clear a lot up does it?
And if it's considered "derogatory" it should be!
They're criminals who's very first act was to commit a Federal Felony. What, now we can't insult criminals?
If they don't like the term "Wetback" then don't do it!

xxxtacy, I'd say that if someone is "offended" by the term "wetback" then that's up to them. They can go off and sulk in the corner if they want.
Being of Irish decent and having dual American/Irish Citizenship if someone calls me a "Mick" it doesn't even bother me.
It's not a "racist" term, how could it be?
Now as far as "offending" someone who's in my country illegally OF COURSE I want to offend them! Fuck 'em! They're criminals.
If you enter this country through other than a "Legal Port of Entry" it's a Federal Felony and you can be arrested at any time.
I've called the Police on a bunch of them!
You just say the magic words; "gun" "drugs."
[/quote]

popeye1250:
You say you call the police and say the magic words "gun" "drugs" to get them to come out and bust the illegals.  I was under the impression that lying  to a police officer or filing a false police report was a felony.  So it would appear that it is OK for you to be a criminal but not the illegal.  It would appear that your rant against illegals is nothing more than PC bigotry.

You insensitive brute, criminals are supposed to be coddled these days. Don't you know anything? And here in PC World, most crimes aren't really crimes. The only real crime is being an opinionated white male... and if we're not ashamed of having penises we're the lowest of the low.
