Popeye,
Read the definition from Webster's.  You keep trying to pertain it to the crossing of the Rio Grande.  That was the history of the word not the definition.  How many times do i have to say this because i am being redundant.

minnetar

I read it in Websters.
What's your question?
It says "Mexican".
What's the problem? They miss the fact that anyone who crosses the Rio Grande illegally is a wetback.
Two guys crossing the Rio Grande illegally, one a "Mexican" one from Guatemala.
Does Webster mean to say that *only* the "Mexican" is a "wetback" but the Guatemalian (isn't?)
Mexicans aren't the only illegal aliens who cross that border, are they?
That doesn't clear a lot up does it?
And if it's considered "derogatory" it should be!
They're criminals who's very first act was to commit a Federal Felony. What, now we can't insult criminals?
If they don't like the term "Wetback" then don't do it!

lmaoooooooo - the reference to the rio grande was in the history of the word not the definition.  How many times do i need to reiterate that fact.  Yall can choose to read it the way you want based on other sources and that is basically what yall do. rofl why don't we just make up all the definitions to words.

Popeye,
why do you refuse to use Webster's dictionary as a source?  i am baffled.

An etymologist studies the origins of words, how their meaning changes and develops over time and how those words fall into disuse, etc.  This study is etymology.

Does it truly matter, since we are really just mincing words now.  We all understand what the term means and how it is used.

i do not believe so as how folks continually try to use the crossing in the Rio Grande as a definition for the word.

Arghhh...am throwing in the towel...lol.  Being stuck at home on Sunday is not a good reason to frequent the message boards.   Today helped me realize that there was a reason I stopped posting for a while.  It's not just this thread either.  I honestly don't think I can learn anything more from them.  Though am sure I will check back from time to time.  I promise to try to refrain from posting.  I may have to tie down my hands.  But I guess there is always my nose.  [:D]

Happy now?

I always just use the Mencia Law:  If it's used on Mind of Mencia, then it's an offensive term to be used only when making humorous statements or when actually intending to be offensive.
