popeye,
You know my feelings of respect regarding an elected office, and the integrity of a symbol. There is also the consideration that I believe it important to defend your right of expression, even if it opposes my position. You go for it! Good for you, and if people ask why, you'll have an opportunity to make your position known. You have the right and freedom for this expression, and I'll me first to defend that right. Yes, I feel as a nation we are in "distress". However I will not be flying the flag upside down.

If more people were aware that an upside down flag signified distress I may have a different opinion. The posts here, indicate that is not the case. For a fleeting moment I considered flying a flag of Mexico upside down, but then I had a cup of coffee. Once it kicked in I decided to go back to writing, emailing, and calling my representatives and trying to find candidates to support next November who will represent me and not Corporations seeking long term cheap labor.

While i respect your right to feel this is appropriate, i personally would not do this because i feel it is disrespectful to our Flag. *Thats just my humble opinion

It's easy to have that immediate reaction to such a display.  It is not a disrespect to the Flag.  It is a symbol of distress or a warning that things are not right.  A flag flown at night, without illumination sends the same message.

after reading the posts ahead of you i suppose this is going to be a thread of 15000 people all whining about disrespecting the flag with no clu that it is really a distress call!  amazing

good post popeye, great idea too!
and good response rich!   right on i will do that with the one on my CAR!  i have a few errands to do today!

I'm not disgusted at your opinion. I'm disgusted that you hold one of our country's most sacred symbols with such contempt.  especially as a veteran. you are disgracing Old Glory with your actions. that is NOT an opinion that is FACT.

i am shocked that anyone can say what you said.

After the way previous admistrations have disrespected their oath of office and the american people you would put respect in a freaking flag.   that flag is nothing more than a representaion of a government, not the other way around.

put your disgust where it belongs and that is the people who the message is being sent to!

Wow...To me the flag is the symbol of our country....And I think to show what a tremendous country that we live in is to give someone the right to burn that symbol....You want to talk about freedom....There it is in a nutshell.

NavyDDG54...The flag is a "symbol" it is made from cloth and in all to many cases it is manufactured outside of the U.S....Mostly in China.....You show a consistency to not honor what so many veterans have actually fought for ....I believe most people who fight especially in the "good" wars of the past did so to protect our inalienable rights.....The flag is but a symbol of our country....Every veteran should stand proud as they watch a flag that has been burned out of protest....In your heart you should be thinking " I am opposed and I find it offensive that someone would take the very symbol of this land and torch it out of disgust...And yet isn't it one the most wonderful thing that I fought to protect the very freedom that allows an individual when so disgusted to take this course of action.".....This is one of the most tremendous aspects in living in a Country that touts itself as being "The Land of the Free."

While I agree with your sentiment, I suggest there are better ways to express your opinion to the lawmakers of our country.

Please, remember that it is a show of disrespect to our flag (not to our lawmakers & elected officials or their policies & decisions) to fly the flag upside down, except in an extreme emergency.

The rules & regulations relating to the flag of the United States of America are found in the United States Code. Title 4, Chapter 1

And, specifics regarding showing respect for the flag are found in Section 8.

Sec. 8. Respect for flag

(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

That's what's going around on the internet now about that pos immigration bill that Bush and Kennedy are trying to sneak through.
And the news gets worse!
Evidently Bush is trying to insert language into this piece of garbage bill that would be the preliminary language to that *"North American Union"* that him and his rich buddies want! (World Net Daily)
So, everyone is encouraged to fly their flags *upside down* all week in protest to this underhanded move by Bush

So what if popeye feels that with what is transpiring in our country poses an extreme danger to his life or property?

The flag is but a symbol...If he wants to hang it upside down, burn it or make it into a t-shirt it is up to him.

You get it, indeed; many don't. The flag is a rag. A symbol, sure, and therein lies the value of burning it, flying it "improperly", or otherwise "desecrating" it. People get way too worked up and weepy over a cheap piece of cloth manufactured in China and sold in mass quantities at WalMart. Let's not forget that symbols like the flag, the Statue of Liberty, and the Liberty Bell, are mere objects intended to remind us of actual people...flesh and blood humans, and principles that affect them. We tend to lose sight of the people and focus on the objects.

Bob

the flag may be the symbol of the counttry. but i chose a bald eagle in flight over a sunset= for my tattoo. no writing.

to me the bald eagle represents freedom.

the 2007 emblem of the us is the 100$ bill.  some gays put up a huge gay flag on their home. stickers on their car. i have none of that here- i am a human 1st.

i have a flag patterred shirt- that is nifty for 4th of july etc.

anhow take a flag , pay taxes with it, electric, barter it for a hanbugrer.

blind patroitism is not good.

bushes resotaration of the dignity of the white house- made many hate/ be mad at the flag.

at one time the swastica was a naational symbol......

I have two issues with this thread. The first is disrespecting Old Glory because you disagree with the policy of the President is not only inappropriate but shameful, embarrasing, and disgraceful.  Old Glory is not a symbol of the President. it is a symbol of this country, of the thousands who have died for the freedoms you hold dear. You should be ashamed for even suggesting that.
My other issue is, world a North American Union be so bad? Look at the EU, and the success it's had in creating a stable continent-wide economy, I know Mexico and Canada would both benefit greatly from a union, and I believe so would the US.  And who knows it might lead to a strong Western Hemishphere Union eventually if Central and South America can be incorporated....Just because Bush wants something doesnt mean it's bad.

DDG54:
I would have thought that you, as an ex navy man, would have known that flying the flag upside down was an international distress signal and not a symbol of disrespect.

You see?

If only you'd not gone to the trouble of that rebellion in the 1770s, you could have a UK flag flying - with the added bonus that most people wouldnt have a bleedin' clue whether it was the right or wrong way up. Much the same as most Brits.

Then you could have your protest, but few would know about it and get offended.

Popeye, you should also realize that this is not a new idea and those who have tried this have met with fierce opposition from Veteran's groups, their communities and some have had their properties damaged as a result and even had their lives threatened.

Where was all the "offense" when illegal aliens flew it upside down under a Mexican flag?

Had I known about it I would be offended. but not disgusted like I am with you. YOU ARE AN AMERICAN CITIZEN AND A VETERAN, it is YOUR FLAG that you are disrespecting and I hope someone sees your flag when it's upsides down and takes it from you, because you dont deserve to own it if you will treat it like a piece of propoganda

NavyDDG54:
Are you really supporting criminal behaviour?  Why would you encourage someone to break the law?  You claim that you were in the Navy.  That implies that you took an oath to protect and defend the constitution and the laws of the United States...one of which is that citizens are to be secure in their possessions.  Now it appears that you mock your oath by inciting others to steal private property.  "He who takes what isn't hiss'n must give it back or go to prison"  Except I would expect that popeye would shoot anyone trying to rob him.
