ORIGINAL: thompsonx Sinergy: I fail to see your point. That firemen die in the line of duty is a given....but on the whole there are many occupations which are much more dangerous...like trash collector. thompson I am not saying it is not a given. While there is a lot of "down time" where the firemen are doing things like saving cats and helping people get their hair unstuck from appliances, when something potentially deadly happens they are the ones who are called. When planes fly into buildings, they go inside. When some rich idiots house is threatened on Mulholland Blvd, they go into it to save the cat. When there is a fire in a fireworks factory, they go inside to get the people out. No fire captain or chief will risks his men's or women's lives to save property...if the chief deems the situation too dangerous he will pull his people off. They made the choice to work in an extremely dangerous profession, even if most of the time it is not. My point is that it is not extremely dangerous, as is verified by the statistics. The reason so few of them die is probably because they have the training, the equipment, the fitness, etc., to survive the situations their job requires them to get in to. Not only the above but also the fact that they do not take unnecessary risks, which is as it should be. To make the statement that they have a "safe" job seems denigrating towards their profession. In comparison to more dangerous jobs it is safe. That you think it seems denigrating toward their profession is just your opinion and not germane to the point being discussed. They perform a valuable and useful service for which, in the main, they are well compensated. If it were up to me I would be most happy if they spent their whole time on the fire department sitting on their asses or polishing fire engines...that would mean no fires. As a sidelight to this discussion, firemen are the number one source of arson induced fires. Sinergy p.s. As far as dangerous jobs go, the only job more dangerous in terms of percentages of deaths on the job for workers than professional longshoreman is professional fisherman. Professional longshoremen are not even in the top ten most dangerous jobs but fork lift drivers are high up on the list of the top one hundred, so be careful budd. Even cops don't make the top ten. In fact more cops die in traffic accidents on the way to and from work than die from homicides in the line of work. thompson
