I know this might seem trivial (and it is, I suppose). Maybe I am interested because I used to be a market researcher, and I cannot believe the following food ever made it to market.

Last Friday eve at my monthly Bridge game, which I hosted, but to which some other players brought snacks to share - some one brought "Tostitos - with a hint of Lime" - I ate a few, and literally became sick.

I simply excused myself, went to the bathroom, got sick, drank some water, and returned. Of course this isn't the fault of the man who brought the chips - he had no way of knowing this would happen (and I'd never mention it to him).

I am not a "picky eater" (really) but -let me tell you - they contained much more than a mere "hint" of Lime. This is the only packaged food that I have ever actually thrown in the garbage immediately, that I can recall. I mean they tasted absolutely awful.

After everyone left, into the garbage they went - and there was almost a whole bag left. I didn't even want my doggies to eat them - they were that bad.

I have to wonder what focus group these chips were ever market-tested on - and how they "passed " the test if  even they were tested on a focus group. The aftertaste was un-bearable. I couldn't get rid of it, even after brushing my teeth twice. ICK!

What foods (if any) have you bought at the grocery store that you thought that were just unbearably awful? Any? I am just curious, I guess. It kind of surprised me I had this strong a reaction to simple Lime-flavored Tostitos (but I did).

Of course I realize taste is an individual thing - guess I am wondering how many people would ever like these chips - I literally became sick eating them.

Maybe I am thinking I am kind of a "food wimp" or something. Any foods anyone else just cannot handle? I am speaking of packaged foods (chips, cookies, or anything else - that is manufactured elsewhere - not foods you make yourself, or produce).

Just curious. Thanks for any replies.

- Susan

Hey I happen to like those!

Especially with fresh guacamole.

Really? Well, to each their own, of course -maybe I just hate Lime flavoring (although I can't really recall ever hating it that much - maybe it was just the combination of Lime and Tostitos).

I am not a picky eater - I will eat almost anything, normally (truly). I just have never had this extreme a reaction to a packaged food. I can't figure it out. It wasn't as if anyone had asked me to eat sheep's eyeballs, or something - they were basically just corn chips. But they tasted really icky to me.

Are there any packaged foods you really hate?

Those tostito's don't even taste like they have a hint of lime to me.  Of course you are also hearing from one
of the pickiest eaters you'll ever meet in life.

Pre-packaged foods I don't care for.  Any sort of canned meat with the exception of tuna.
Pretty much any sort of canned veggie.
Any sort of beef, turkey or chicken.

Well as you can see I could go on and on.

Aside from occasional snack foods I don't eat processed stuff. So yup there is a lot out there that I can't or won't eat. Like Kraft Macaroni and Orange Cheese.... egads.

Thanks for answering, I appreciate knowing I am not alone in that there are foods other people really strongly dislike.
I actually don't know why I began this thread - it seems so trivial. But I was really surprised at my reaction to these corn chips.

I was shopping yesterday and saw Doritos has a flavor combination (two seperate chips) consisting of "Hot Wings" and then "Bleu Cheese". I said thanks, but no thanks to the sample girl.

As for canned meats, canned chicken is good for chicken salad, provided you buy the white meat vareity.

subrob1967: HotWings and Bleu Cheese sounds a little weird to me as well, in combination with chips (maybe I am pickier than I thought - especially if together, but even separately - the Bleu Cheese especially sounds a bit weird - and IMO Hot Wings flavoring belongs on meat, not chips).

I do realize there are people in the world who are starving (can anyone tell I was raised a Catholic by that remark? hehe). All I have to say to that is:

1) I donate quite a bit of my income to charity and  -

2) If we sent some of these folks Tostitos w/a "hint" of Lime - they might well refuse them, IMO

Thanks for the replies. Any more comments are welcome. Nice to know I am not alone in this kind of thing happening to me.

(Actually this thread might belong on the "Polls and Random Stupidity" section, but it's too late for me to take it back (sorry to any Mods out there, if they think so as well).

Hey I happen to like those!

I happen to love them!  That's strange how what made you so sick, Susan, another could find delicious.  I tried those right after they came out and they quickly became my favorites, esp. with good salsa.  There is definitely more than a "hint of lime," though, and that's what makes them so good.  "Mission" brand chips also came out with a cilantro lime flavored chip (they're yellow corn, not white like the Tostitos) and I'm not sure that they aren't better.  They're a staple on Mexican night around here.  Sorry you found them so distasteful.  The weird thing is, I AM a pretty picky eater and I can't believe how much I love those lime chips.  Different strokes and all that jazz.............luci

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I do just hate Lime favoring. I dunno - the aftertase was weird and repulsive (to me) - and it was more because of the Lime than anything else. Taste is a very individual thing, I agree. I am sure there must be many folks who love them, or they wouldn't be on the store shelves, I guess.

Are there any packaged foods you really dislike, that you can recall?

It's strange but I can't really think of any right off-hand that I've tried and not liked.  The reason for this is, as I said earlier, I'm pretty picky.  I only buy pre-packaged things that I pretty much just know I'm going to like.  I'm not a big risk-taker in that particular area.  I've noticed many things that I just wouldn't buy because they look so awful.  Probably the grossest example are those "Sausage on a Stick" things with pancake wrapped around them.  Sounds hideous to me but I'm sure lots of people really dig 'em...........luci

In keeping with the lime theme, I have no idea how Corona got to be such a popular beer. It smells like a car battery, and has a tastes that makes the lime vital. Corona light, I'm convinced is colored water from Mexico City.

Thanks for the reply, caitlyn.

I guess I am maybe not a fan of Lime - and more power to the Tostitos manufacturer people and everything - I was just surprised because normally, I can eat almost anything (except Curry, the spice. I can't eat much Middle-Eastern food either, for that reason - there seems to be a lot of curry in much of it. Dunno what I'll do if Osama ever takes over the Western world). But I honestly do like most other kinds of food, especially lots of Ethnic foods.

Susan, I wonder if that particular bag of chips had something wrong with it?

Level: Well, maybe - but they otherwise appeared to be okay -and other people who were there ate some, and appeared to enjoy them - there was a lot of other food there, so they passed a lot on the chips in general (I had pizza there, too, and that was a big hit).

They didn't leave the room and get sick right away, like I did (and nobody has phoned me that they became sick from any of the food). But it's possible (but I appreciate you thinking of the possibility).

Are there any packaged foods that you have ever had a strong (bad) reaction to eating?

Ha! You are a food lover! (me too). I know it's a kind of trivial topic - and I am not trying to drag the Tostitos manufacturers down (really I'm not) - I was just surprised I got sick from them. Because I am normally the kind of person who loves trying different foods - I even run a monthly dinner group where we try different (mostly ethnic) restaurants. I love most kinds of food, and love trying new kinds, and will eat things it seems many other people don't want to even try eating, sometimes.

Thanks for the replies, people.

About those lime chips, I'm meh about them.  I'd rather have plain chips that don't detract from the salsa or dip.
Unless we're talking about eating a sandwich, that's when I want a dose of salt & vinegar chips....yum  I'm sure they are hideously bad for you, but I'm not a health food nut, I'm more of a junk food junkie.
