I forget why SPAM was originally invented, but if I recall, my mother said it was (originally) some kind of food for soldiers - some version of almost indestructible meat that could weather days in the field, unrefrigerated, without rotting, etc. Which makes me wonder what it does to one's digestive system, actually. When I was a smalll child, before my dad got a promotion at work, my mom was always fixing SPAM casseroles, and other dishes with SPAM, because it was inexpensive at the time, compared to things like steak, and even hamburger. It thought it was way, way too salty for my taste. I haven't eaten it since then. -Susan
