Merc, Wasn`t saying that PETA was part of the the HBO special.Just mentioned that in reference to the numbers of pooches lost every year. Thanks for the link. PETA is however, very involved in stopping where those doomed dogs go,ie. the medical research labs/animal testing outfits. Without that draw, that suction, that demand of dogs and cats, there would be no events like the one shown in the film. There would be no "bunchers",or the lower than dirt people, who get/steal/"adopt"/pick up off the street, the dogs and cats and bring them to the "bunchers" for a payday. The medical research industry claims to be on the up and up.But that is complete bullshit. We know that.We can do better. Saw a show in PBS some years ago, about animal research. It dealt with issues like the same experiments ,being done over and over(endlessly, for years),not because of knowledge being gained, but b/c they got money for every animal used(abusedIMO) and the data they gathered. This particular experiment was what happens to monkeys ,after a severe head injury. The animal was in some sort of rack(made of metal),w/ the waist clamped, the legs clamped and arms to.The animals head was held with another big metal ring. The monkey did not have any pain meds or anything to help in that regard, and was wide awake. Just over it was a swinging weight on a long pendulum, with one edge sharpened. Not really sharp, more like plow blade. As the monkey is held helpless, the arm is released ,the wright falls, cleanly knocking off the top of the monkey`s skull. Of course the animal starts to yelp and scream, but can`t move, even a little. As the monkey dies, they record the vital signs, levels, etc. Then they do it again, and again.I was reminded about that show, when I saw the 2nd "Silence of The Lambs",when Ray Liotta got served(literally),in the same way the monkey did. I hear people say that we need to do this research,to help humans. I`m not convinced. I also hear there are better and more accurate ways to do research, and that animal research provides little benefit, compared the the amount of animals torn apart every year. I`ve heard people say that no amount of dogs and cats killed ,is to high, when it comes to possible, future medical breakthroughs. I don`t agree,we can do better. Another issue, that only PETA has brought up,was/is the use of dogs as practice models, for the military medical corps. They shoot dogs,in order to get practice in how to treat gun shot wounds.Poor things,we can do better. I believe that the 2 things I just mentioned are wrong. We don`t have to shoot dogs,to learn how to treat battle field wounds. And I don`t think that endless, repeated, and outdated animal experiments, and vivisection,is right either. My best to beth.
