Um, gee.....forgive me for my blatant stupidity.  Lots of things I'd like to say, but then, why bother?  The traffic noises he is complaining about ARE a fact of life, they are the same noises I live with.  You should take your advice about finding ways to share a space to heart, and lighten up on people.  No need to be rude!

For the record, I did go back and read thru the posts.....pretty much everyone was saying alot of the same things that I said in my post...they just didn't point out whether or not they had read them first.  Does that make them wrong in "not doing their research" before making their posts?  PFFFTTTT...I'm putting too much effort into this rebuttal......get over it!

I find it rude when people breeze into the end of a long thread and "contribute" things that have already been done to death, because they can't be bothered to get up to speed (by their own admission, I might add). I didn't call you stupid so please don't invent offenses on my part.

I called you lazy.

You insist on repeating that normal traffic noise is the same as deliberate, unnecessary and excessive noise, despite the distinction being made repeatedly throughout this thread and despite that fact being reiterated, on page 10, for your personal convenience. Do you believe I am too stupid to understand your arguments? How rude.

Z.

to all the folks who are annoyed by the motorcycle noise two questions;first where is it stated as fact that the noise is deliberate, unnecessary, and excessive?some people buy their bike just the way it is.second how do you feel when you go out to a nice restaurant for a nice meal and have to listen to some assholes crying baby?

It's that I wouldn't like the fact that he's maliciously harrassing a bunch of people.

Wow, so anybody who annoys you should curl up and die? Bit of an ego there hmmm.....

..I'm under the growing impression that you're going out of your way to misunderstand my position.

I would say TwiceHappy is intrepretting your, be they however laboriously presented, opinions and positions quite accurately. You present a problem, then rather than present a solution or ask for input, you wish the alleged cause dead.  I find your posts annoying to read, and despite that, due to my lack of being YOU, do not wish you dead.

See how easy that is:

State the problem:  Your posts, writing style, and opinions annoy me

Pose possible solutions:
1) block you (not really my style)

2) stay out of the forums (alot more my style, but was personally invited to this thread as being applicable, and got hooked in)

3) personally attack your immaturity, obstinance, and general annoyingness (again, not really my style, but hey, if it's in the name of my personal greater good....)

4) attempt to have you banned from the forums for annoying myself and others (similar to a ban against motorcyclists hmmm)

5) Wish you dead, along with all the other things and people who annoy me, after all that is of the least inconvenience to me, who cares if you supposedly have rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, or whatever it is where you're at.

Bottom line:  You claim to have "grown up" but it appears to me you still have alot of that to do.

De Mistress of Bullshit Intolerance

Ah, my apologies.  I had no idea that my post was keeping you up at nights against your will.  I can see how this is a perfect analogy.

Thank you for showing me what tolerance looks like.

Sorry,  Twicehappy2x.  I'm not willing to argue with you.  I mean, blah, after I responded to your posts, you went back and basically changed them, even backquoting my responses to individual posts in the post itself.. it's more than just a bit confusing.

I really hate people who go out for the sake of annoying others.  I imagine this is a small portion of bikers, and I'm sure that this population isn't limited to just bikers.  I really do think people who spend their time out just to make others' lives harder out of malice are the scum of the Earth.

It's how I feel.  I just don't see arguing with you here over it to be productive.  Peace.

I'm unsure if some are truly confused or just upset.  The main subject of this post is not about my personal opinion, so this really shouldn't be dwelled on.  But, meh, here it is.

Bikers:  Nothing against 'em.  Hell, I have bikers in my family.

Bikers with loud pipes:  I see them as immature, inconsiderate, and/or neglectful in many cases.  There are exceptions, like if someone's out on a country road and such, or at a biking convention where people don't mind, of course, that's fine.  Just the guys who sound like a train around a lot of people who just don't want to hear it are annoying.

Bikers with loud pipes who drive around appartment complexes at 2AM just to keep people awake:  These are the people I wish would drop dead.  It's not that they annoyed me, or that they annoyed others.  It's that they've done so for the sheer sake of causing others misery in whatever way they can.  Granted, keeping people up for ten minutes at night isn't the worst crime ever.  It's the malice in doing it that makes me hate them.

Bikers who think I'm bashing them and are therefore flaming:  Guys, it's okay.  Unless you go out of your way to annoy people, I probably don't have anything against you.  If you like loud pipes in crowded city streets, yeah, I think what you do is annoying, but I'm not saying you should drop dead.  If you just bike, or do whatever you want where it doesn't bug people, I don't even think you're annoying.  It's fine.

I normally right long disclaimers at the start of threads to avoid these misunderstandings.. I just had no idea that this would be such a sensitve subject.

(PS-  The "I think it's annoying" is my personal opinion.  It's being constantly brought up, hence elaborating on it.  Yeah, it's not the subject of the thread.  So, if you care for my opinion on this particular subject, there it is.  If you don't like it and/or don't care, seriously, it's fine.  I'm really not sure what I have to say anymore to not hurt someone's feelings.)

That could all have been said in two lines:

Bikers that wake me up
Annoy me.

OK I'll admit I stretched out the lines there: padding. Don't you feel that this could have all been avoided by less dramatic language CL?

Maybe?  Meh.  I don't know.  I guess I just don't understand the sensitivity.  I'm sure these same people would've felt the same way in my shoes, so I don't really get it.

I think anyone who "wishes someone would drop dead" because they have done something to annoy them has more issues than being kept awake at night.

Life is far to precious to wish anyone dead.

Having read more of the responses here, I will say that I have definitely learned how to be even MORE defensive on the road.....people coming in from the right side streets, idiots making left turns, and don't even get me started on idiots with cell phones!!!!

it was a group of about 20 Harleys going down the street....OMG!!!!!   Never thought I'd get hot and bothered by a machine, but DAMN...there's no other sound like that in the world!  Ya gotta love it!

For the best defensive driving on a motorcycle classes in the world, contact your local ABATE chapter. They use MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) certified instructors only, I would know, i am one, lol.

As to the sound of a well tuned Harley getting your engine revved, try sitting on one, they do not call them the Great American Vibrator for nothing.

I haven't read the whole thread, but just so ya know they have these great
sculptual ear plugs that pretty much block out any loud noise, geeze why don't you
invest, they do a really good job and are only about $3.00 for eight of them.

I am living inner city and I must say I love the sound at one or two in the morning
of the Harleys leaving the bars, it reminds me instantly of being on one with the breeze in my hair, huggin' my girl.

I can think of a thousand other things that would piss me off .

All mouth and no trousers. HDs are old men's toys. I remember a health and safety advert in a German magazine advising middle-aged men whose children had grown up and were thinking about buying a motorbike again to consider something like a Harley that is not going to run away with them, something their inexperience and slowing reflexes can manage. The problem when a Harley goes down the street is that it takes so long to do so and adds to the length of time there is noise.

As someone else pointed out in theis thread, HDs are a triumph of presentation over substance.

Spoken like somebody who has never owned one. Before you make that judgment you really should have first hand experience to speak from. Take one out, ride it across country or something. Not just spout what you read in a magazine.

Here is a link on land speed and handling records and resources for Harley's.

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/lsr_gallery.htm

If you buy a dresser and keep it stock, yes that is for touring. Exactly how fast do you think you should be going on public roads anyway? At that, Scooter's Dresser, an '83 Shovelhead has a top speed of 120 miles an hour, and she can get up and go at a seconds notice. That bike also has no problem carrying 3 riders, he rode both of us around the Boogie.

As far as an investment goes how much is an 24 year old Jap bike worth? The shovel sold for around 7000 dollars brand new, it would sell for at least 25,000 dollars now. The only changes made to it since it was new is a paint job.

But if you buy one of the many other models there are some you can race in stock classes. Then if you build a chopper or a drag bike out of one of them it is a whole different story.

Here is a bit of trivia for you on Harley's, about a model from the late 50's;

On September 6, 2006, at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats, a woman,Valerie Thompson became a World Land Speed Record Holder in the American Motorcycle Association with a top speed of 145.647 miles per hour, riding a 120-inch Classic Harley-Davidson 120" Panhead that is designed to go 200 mph..

And please , everybody spare me coming back to give me the "yeah, if you modify them" speech. That is standard for any type of machine, bike, car boat, etc, that you race.

The Motorcycle Song
words and music by Arlo Guthrie

CHORUS:
I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want to die
Just want to ride on my motorcy...cle

It was late last night the other day
I thought I'd go up and see Ray
So l went up and I saw Ray
There was only one thing Ray could say, was:

This song is about the time that I was ridin' my motorcycle.
Going down a mountain road, at 150 miles an hour, playin'
my guitar. On one side of the mountain road there was a
mountain, and on the other side there was nothin' - there was
a cliff in the air.

Now, when you're going down a mountain road at I50 miles
an hour you gotta be very careful, especially if you're playin'
a guitar. Especially if that guitar is an acoustic guitar.
Because if it's an acoustic guitar, the wind pressure is greater
on the box side than on the neck side, because there's
more guitar on the box side. I wasn't payin' attention ..

Luckily I didn't go into the mountain - I went over the cliff.
I was goin' at 150 miles an hour sideways and 500 feet down
at the same time.

I knew it was the end. I looked down, I said ''Wow! Some
trip". I thought it...well I knew it was...I knew it was my last
trip, and in my last remaining seconds in world,I decided
to write one last farewell song to the world.

Put a new ink cartridge in my pen. Took out a piece of paper.
I sat back and I thought awhile. Then I started writin':
I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorsickle

And I don't want to die
Just want to ride on my motorcy ...cle."

I knew that, it wasn't the best song l ever wrote, but I didn't
have time to change it. I was comin' down mighty fast.

But as you all know, and as fate would have it, I didn't die. I
landed on the top of a police car. And he died. I drove away
on the road that he was on. I came into town at a screamin'
175 miles an hour, playin' the motorcycle song.

I came into town, I jumped off my bike, the bike went around
the corner by itself, went up on the stand by itself, turned
itself off.

I walked over to my friend. He was standin' there eatin'
pickles. I said "Hi, what's happenin'?" He looked at me in the
eye and said "Nothin'".

You gotta sing it with that kind of enthusiasm. Like you just
squashed a cop...

The Motorcycle Song
words and music by Arlo Guthrie

CHORUS:
I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want to die
Just want to ride on my motorcy...cle

If it wasn't for male menopause, both Harley-Davidson, and the Hair Club for Men would be hurting.

Humm biker infighting. Everyone hates bikers and they hate one another too. It’s kind of comforting.

Most of the folks i know who ride have been doing it all their lives, i doubt male menopause begins at 18 or 20 years of age. And like several of the other riders who posted i am neither male nor going through menopause. Nor am i balding.

Wow, those are pretty reasonable. But then again, they are stock Harley's. You can pick up a brand new Sporty for around 7 grand almost any where, then add all those shiny chrome accessories later on a piece at a time.

My Master who is in the wind now used to build custom HD's for a living. The lower end bikes ran around 30 or 40 thousand, the highest priced one he ever built came in at 110 thousand, but it did have a nitrous boost on it.

There are three in our garage with a fourth to be added by next spring.
