The only protection, the only understanding, police officers really get these days are from each other. When facing such an overwhelmingly hostile public that hates you because of the power you have, and uses your actions as a way to get out of their personal responsibility, their only defense is each other. Cops stick up for each other when it is to their advantage, and they sell each other out the same way... just like anyone else would.
