I do as well and am with Abbynormal...I don't believe that its a matter of can.  It is definately something that is given to you.   Its not something that you suddenly just decide to do.   I also think that it is something that you have to want and be willing to allow to happen.   Maybe submissive types find it easier I don't know.

Makes perfect sense.

'Tell you what, you know how women love a spot of French to soften them up a bit?..........imagine you've just had a meal and a couple of glasses of wine......lights dimmed, Marvin Gaye in the background........you lean over and start whispering in tongues in her ear.......she'd be wild with desire!....imagine having that tool in your love armoury! I've been thinking of learning a language for a while, but why mess around with French when you can go the whole hog?

And I'm sure that God would be overjoyed to give you glossolalia for that purpose.

It appears that all good things must finally come to an end.  Its really too bad as people have been willing to allow others to voice their beliefs without making fun of them.  Thats truly a rarity on here and especially when the topic is Christianity.

Don't take it to heart...it's a bit of fun.....tell you what, if you send me over a tongues guide for beginners we can have a chat on the phone to resolve this misunderstanding.......all the best with it...there's no right and wrong remember, but if you can't laugh at yourself, then there's something amiss.

If you are actually interested I would suggest you go to amazon and put speaking in tongues in the search for books.

Nobody "teaches" you tongues.  Its not a language you go about learning.  If you want that there there are classes at your closest college, or many programs that will help you learn a new language.  I took 3 semesters of college French myself.

While I find humor in many things my funny bone was not tickled by this.  In denominations that believe in it the words "baptism in the Holy Spirit"  are the common term for the initial experience.   I try very hard not to criticize of make fun of the beliefs of others.  I do that because I realize that its not possible for me or anyone else to fully understand what someone else's spiritual beliefs mean to them.  I know that they are important to them or they would not discuss them on a forum like this.

I didn't come to my current belief set because it is the only one I ever explored.  I have studied other religions and forms of spirituality, even the new age stuff back in my 20's.   I got exactly zero from all that searching.   I came back to Christianity.  There is an old saying "If you let something go and it comes back to you it is yours.  If it doesn't it was never yours to begin with."  I think God knows that.

My take on your post was that you took something you don't understand as being a gift from God and would like to use that  to further your sex life.  That is as demeaning as asking a Wiccan how old they were when they first flew on a broom.

Things that are funny to me:  actual jokes, the antics of kittens, my psychotic chihuahua, a good comedy movie, good natured ribbing by friends, my own idiotic moments,  and much more.

Hasn't this thread turned nasty yet?  I was dragged along to some of these fringe, so-called, Christian churches right before I rejected organized religion completely.  Isn't there a verse somewhere about it being better to be cast into the sea with a millstone around your neck, than to turn a _____ away from God?

NG, "Marvin Gaye?"
Boyo, how about some Grover Washington or Frank Sinatra?
Frank Sinatra will ALWAYS get you laid!
"Oggga booga beega, oogga booga."
There's some "tongue" for you.
Yeah, I could never figure out that "speak in tongues" stuff.
Could they possably have meant "Aramaic" or Hebrew" or Babylonian?"
Wouldn't it have to be a viable language that other people somewhere could understand?
How could you make grunts and groans and call that "speaking in tongues" if no other human being could understand it?
Let me guess, "God" can understand it, right?
Ooga booga, oogaa booga booga.
Guess what I just said?

No, I'm not interested. I was having a bit of fun, but in all seriousness, I have no problem with your idea/beliefs.

Are there any more on here? I am Pentecostal (probably the only one to ever be here) and was just wondering if there are any other Jesus-only Christians here.

To the OP yes....my Master and I are...(meaning Jesus being THE way of course)

I have spoken in tongues, been slain, and drunk in the Holy Ghost

I've heard of speaking in tongues but never the other two, being slain and drunk in the Holy Ghost...I'd love a quick explanation of both, if possible.

thx

Popeye, I could put Billy Joel on in the background, serve up a microwaved meal for two and spill wine down her dress........and still talk my way into getting my cock sucked. a good craftsman never blames his tools. 'Truth be told, I do like Marvin Gaye though.....anyway I'm only 34, Popeye, women of my generation don't know Frank Sinatra from the next man.

P.S. Apologies to the Christians for using the word cock in a god thread.

Hey Buddy, you don't know what you're missing with some Frank Sinatra!
You'll have to drug them to keep them from raping you!

Yes, the millstone warning was apparently a common phrase of his.  Specifically, it refers to causing someone to stumble in their walk; to sin.  If an alcoholic is struggling through their recovery, we’d say someone caused him to stumble by taking him out drinking again.  That’s just an obvious example.  His actual warning(s) read like this:

"...but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” [Matthew 18:6]

"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” [Mark 9:42]

"It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin." [Luke 17:2]

If someone took you to one of the whackjob charismaniac places, well, I’m sorry that was your exposure. People feel “driven away” from churches for so many possible reasons.  Sometimes -- way too many times -- it's due to actions on the part of the church attendees.  Sometimes it's simply because they don’t like the message of the Gospel or they just have a deep spiritual hatred for Christians. Those who follow Christ were warned long ago that we would be received poorly, mocked, reviled, etc.

Side note but sorta related: When dealing with those outside the church (i.e., non-Christians) the first job of the church is to present the good news of Christ and then help meet any charitable needs we can.  More specifically (and here’s a verse they don’t teach much), Christians are not to judge non-Christians, as specifically it states: “For what have I to do with judging outsiders?  Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?  God judges those outside.” [1 Corinthians 5:12-13]  That’s not to say we can or should have no opinion on anything (Christianity is not a call to moral neutrality of course) but only that all visitors should welcomed and that non-Christian visitors are just that.

I'm quite familiar with the "good news," thank you very much.  I'm also quite familiar with those who insist that theirs is the one twue interpretation, set of rules and translation of a 3600 and 1800 year old book of history and myth.  That is long before we get to the deliberate ignorance and denial required to maintain a fundamentalist worldview.

Start telling me how the fossilized fish we find in the desert are evidence of Noah's Flood, how all the non-Christian faiths are inspired by demons.  I'm not interested in a tiny little vision of God that requires turning off the brain.

I wonder how one explains the discovery of pieces of wooden wheels found in the Red Sea not too terribly long ago?

Some sort of historical event?  Perhaps even an event of sufficient significance to be incorporated in into the cultural mythology of a society?  Or maybe just another bit of complete bullshit spouted by some 'proud of his ignorance' preacher and repeated until it becomes doctrine.  Just like the screams of hell coming from those 'deepest ever' holes drilled in Russia.
