Status: offline 		I appear quite preppy and straight laced. 0 tattoos, never dyed my hair, no odd peircings, boring clothes from the GAP.

I always found the goth subculture weird because so many people who wear clothing that is totally erotic in an SM type way have no interest in BDSM. I look at some of them them and wonder how they wear a latex corset and a collar without any interest in BDSM. I know Im not right to feel so, but they honestly kind of annoy me. Basically I dont get them. I get people that are into BDSM and goth culture, but the latter without the former is plain weird to me.

If you are into the goth subculture, how common is it for people in that scene not to be into BDSM in any way?

Status: offline 		I was at a goth/industrial party hosting the dungon space few weeks ago and basically spending the whole night flogging (and boy were my arms tired!).  It was the middle aged guys in slacks and button downs would come up to be bound, caned, flogged, spit in, whatever.  Most of the pretty bright things in 'fetish' gear would stare and go back to the bar or the dance floor or otherwise point and comment.  Never make assumptions, esp based on 'dress'.

Status: offline 		Interesting how we perceive people at first glance.  I tend to wear lots of black and silver.  I just like it.  When people ask why, I just tell them that it makes me feel strong, kind of powerful, confident, and probably something to do with the fact that I never wore it when I was younger because so many people told me that redheads should never wear black.  Now, I don't follow the "rules of fashion" for redheads.  I wear what I like and what makes me feel good. 

I think it's kind of funny when I go into places like Hot Topic and the goth-garbed people who work there ask me if I'm buying stuff for a youngster.  The last time this happened, I smiled knowingly, and politely said, "No, I'm actually looking for a copy of The Notorious Bettie Page dvd for myself."  The poor thing looked like he swallowed a bug, and then showed me where to find it.

I think the surprise of "book cover shock" goes both ways.

im clearly not goth...but that doesnt stop me from listening to goth music :) with the likes of floor jansen and simone simons and tarja turunen.

and i sport 4 tattoo's one of which is a goth girl :)

You attach a value to symbols within your culture.  You get annoyed when others do not share your values in their usage of the same symbols.

I like to play.  I LOVE to be a "stand and modeler" as it's totally my kink.  I get frustrated seeing so much black and stripper wear- I'm so much more into color and formal satins and chiffons and such.

Status: offline 		How you dress and what tattoo if any determinds what group you fit in ,what about the music you listen to and what kinda car you drive ?To me all those factors dont mean spit ,I have no ink on me no body piercing "atleast no lasting ones "I have a wide range of music i listen to and in the end i  am still just me .Like i have said before lables have a tough time stickin on me lol maybe more  tape is needed lol .

L/A > i am so with you on that higher fashion VS stripper wear  line of thinking .I so love the interview with a vampire ,queen of the dammed,underworld high fashion vamp items .I have also found as a male,  its much harder to find these items  so when i do i grab them .

when i wore the collar of my previous master, the only person who ever actually realized it was a collar (at least out loud) recognized it because of his interest in furry subculture. personally, even if i weren't submissive, i would still love corsets...and i know plenty of people who love latex just because it's latex. doesn't make them dominant or submissive. hell, there are tons of sadomasochists who are not dominant or submissive. "fetish wear" isn't some special secret outfit just for bdsm people.

i also don't understand why people need to label other people based on their clothing. i wear a lot of black. i have a few tattoos and piercings and plan to get more. it doesn't make me "goth." i wear a lot of colors, too. i wear corsets because i like them. i wear things because i feel like it. not to make sure i'm the poster girl for bdsm or for whatever other category you want to tag onto it.

"I see you are owned..."
"What?"
"This collar," *touched collar* "you are owned"
*blank stare* "oh! no....it just means...well...that I am a sub...."
*stoney silence*
"well...? um...."
"No, thank you"

Before anyone gets in a huff, yes I get wearing a collar for show is not some sort of capital crime, its just not what I look for...as I tell the men who press me further- "Collars should lock"

yes i use ebay but not for clothes.  cant try them on and every time ive bought from there it never fits.  current price on ebay for the same catsuit i had is average of $50 + 10-20 ship.  the shipping is the problem and then custom issues.  when i bought my catsuit i paid only $20 + $10 about 6 years ago from an ebay seller who no longer exist.  they were a liquidator so prices were ultra low.  i saw the same catsuit at hot topic for $50  which at the time i was looking at (3-4 years ago) was about $80 canadian.

i can not see spending $15 on shipping of a tshirt.  that is pointless.  it is because most sellers on ebay charge double or more than the actual ship cost.  i dont have a credit card otherwise id buy direct from hot topic.  or if they will ever have paypal available.

we dont even have victoria secret in canada! SIGH

Status: offline 		The "goth" subculture is more about a reaction to how uniform our culture has become. Goths tend to revel in darker passions, but really aren't into kink. They'll sit and read Poe, or Lovecraft, or Stoker, and listen to tons of The Cure, and Peter Murphy and many, many others. The general idea is to set yourself apart from the herd. This is a sentiment that I actually find appealing.

Generally, it's about the fun of looking extreme, like you are a member of the Addams Family, while enjoying the company of others who enjoy the whole ovure as well.

Yes, the appropriate a lot of our symbols. They also draw a great deal from the Victorian and Edwardian era. (I suspect "Sweeny Todd" with revitalize the clubs for some time to come.) But it's all relatively harmless.

Go to Home Depot.  Build a bridge (im sure you can figure out what comes next.)
You cant dictate what people wear based on what lifestyle they are in, so you may as well get the big girl pants on, and stop letting it annoy you.  I hate to say it, but I question the kind of person you are, that lets someones outward appearance make up what you feel for that person, before you know their personality...

Every other month, I go to a club that is mainly goth themed.  I have spoken to 30-50 (almost everyone who goes there most nights when a band isnt playing) of the people that I have made an almost friendship with, and none of them are into BDSM.  10 or so, had to get me to explain to them what exactly it was before they could answer. Take what you want from my answer...If I have made any sense...lol.



edited to add:  I wanna damn cookie for not slamming the prep who is annoyed by the goth kids who are just wearing what they want to express themselves...

like someone already it's a fetish. 

my take is - merely what's in style these days like collars.  it seems to be latest fashion statement to wear chain link to steel collars though the person may or not be in the kink. even my oldest UM is sporting a collar.

does it bother me that someone's wearing a collar? no because i know the significance behind the why i wear mine every single day.

does it bother me the gothic/industrial/punk/metal subculture are in kink wear? nope because when i review shows containing that subculture i basically fit right in with my kink jewelry and clothes on.

Status: offline 		So those of us who are both goth and BDSM should expect double the judgement from both sides of the equasion? 
 
 luna has been goth since she was 16.  after years of being trapped in the carbon copy world of catholic all girl schools and uniforms and conformity, the goth subculture was a blessing for luna - it allowed her to express her creativity, her uniqueness and her need to be different, to show her refusal to conform to "society"  luna thinks that this subculture of her teen years allowed her to cultivate who she would be as a submissive.  It gave her the courage to turn her back on conventional sexuality.  Society had always been "wrong" about so much, and so it was easy for luna to accept, perhaps because of her goth self, that society could be wrong about sexuality too.  That the wrist cuffs and collars and role playing of young goths might have something more buried under them.  Yes, luna gets a bit annoyed at all the preteenas wandering around in their black dresses and their wrist cuffs pretending that the angst of the world is upon them - but only because goth seems to have decended from the social commentary of luna's youth to a clothing statement.  But then again - those teens have the courage to wear their socially unacceptable clothing in public.  They show their disstaste for society's "norms". 
 
Its not much different from WIITWD.  We too as a "subculture"  have selected a path that differs from society's norms.  it bothers luna a bit that we as BDSMers preach tolerance to other's kinks . . . does that tolerance only extend to those of our own "club"?  luna would be hurt to meet some of you in public, (some who she has called friend on these boards)  in her black clothing and wrist cuffs, to know that you would look at her clothing, see a "goth" and judge her for that.

Status: offline 		It's that the two scenes do overlap and both pull from the past and unconventional.  Corsets are widely used in both scenes, but it's not a case of goths wearing BDSM gear -it's people in two scenes wearing an article of clothing from the past pulled into modern use again.  Same with collars and chains and such. 

Again with the corset example, waist-training is part of BDSM, goth, and body modification culture, to name three.  A body-mod'ing waist trainer isn't mimicking or using a BDSM thing, they're engaging in a practice that is also part of some people's BDSM lifestyle.  Or they may have an interest in both, of course... or all three.

Differing and overlapping scenes often pull from the same sources.

I love wearing "collars"/chokers with the right outfits, but I would not ever wear someone's collar in the BDSM-ownership sense.  Why?  Because chokers are pretty and match my outfits.  Without the symbology attached it, it's just a pretty necklace.
