I was told that Pres Bush could declare Marshall law, which would suspend the elections indefinitely, thus allowing him to remain in office until he decided the "war" was over Tell me that is not possible

It's quite possible, but we need to be in a declared war or have a national state of emergency.

Bush has given himself permission to stay in office indefinitely (though I don't expect him to exercise this privilage until much closer to the elections or right after the elections before he is to leave office). Just a reminder to one and all... http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/05/print/20070509-12.html None of these acts have to happen on American soil for this to take place. However, this build up to the war on Iran is definitely looking as one of the roads he could easily use to keep office. Heck, the war in Iraq also could work, though it wouldn't be as easy to sell to the American public.

Yeah, let's all hope Pelosi and crew have at least enough backbone to keep that from happening... I doubt if he'd have enough support from even the GOP members of the house. (Who wants to be remembered in the history books as ones who sold America down the river?)

What is even scarier is that he effectively has control of the Supreme Court now and could simply have term limits declared unconstitutional and then steal another election as he did the last two.

After 8 years of BS from a democrat party that's hell bent on losing a war in order to improve their election prospects I'm sure he can't wait until January 2009. If I have this right the “National Emergencies Act” allows the Congress to countermand a Presidential declaration of emergency and associated use of emergency powers. So the President could try to suspend elections but would only be successful with the approval of congress. Butch

Oh good lord folks Martial Law has been part of the Office of the President since 1787. Bush would have to have the support of the entire Flag Officer and above military to make it work on a grand scale, and I can tell you he would never get it. US Military Officers just are not the type to keep a President in office when the situation at hand is nowhere nearly bad enough to prevent elections from being held. Another scare tactic from the anti Bush crowd. I have no great love for the man but I'm not going to fall prey to the ill informed, conspiracy theorists, idea that he's even thinking of how to continue past the term. FDR had the last declaration of Martial Law, Hawaii during WWII Before that Andrew Jackson New Orleans 1812 Right after the Battle of New Orleans, but he was a General at the time not a President. Katrina was not under Martial Law, but rather the Mayor suspended the requirement for the police to worry about Civil Rights or Mirranda Rights readings to prevent looting.

How is Bush's Administration scary? America is safer than it has ever been, a brutal and vile dictator is dead. Qadafi has given up his WMD's and has embraced western society out of fears that he would be the next one in America's crosshairs, the Taliban is crippled, Al-Qaeda is a mere fraction of what it once was, North Korea has agreed to abandon it's nuke program. and we are WINNING the war in Iraq, in fact we are having so much sucess that Bin Laden felt the need to try and scare Iraqis from operating against Al-Qaeda. In reference to our economy certain aspects are in trouble yes, but others are strong (unemployment for instance). Our border with Mexio is more secure than it was (yes it still needs alot of work). Our military is stronger now than at any point under Clinton's rule (except for the month or so after Clinton took office, prior to his continuios degreadation of America's military). All of this with only invading two countries (Clinton sent troops into more countries than any other US president in history) And frankly truth be told we have not lost that many soldiers in Iraq, it is still under 4,000 and that's with 4 (almost 5) years of war. Lets compare to past wars: U.S. Civil War--558,052--**Total number includes Union and Confederate military losses combined. World War II--407,316 (including 1,465 at D-day alone) World War I--116,708 Vietnam War--58,168 Korean War--54,246 U.S.-Mexican War--13,283 American Revolution--4,435 *Iraq War--3,815* (as of 10.07.07) Spanish-American War--2,456 War of 1812--2,260 *Afghanistan--382* (as of 10.07.07) Gulf War--293 all in all I think Bush has not failed as President. If you can loost past the liberal scare tactics and look at his accomplishments I think you might come to the same conclusion (you still dont have to like him, personally I dont like him either, but that doesnt mean you cant acknowledge the fact he was not as a bad of a president that he was made out to be)
