Having been born in 1950, I can say my grandparents slept in different beds and even different bedrooms however my parents pushed two twin beds together to make a king size bed which was not made then. They slept together, and at times I slept in between them in the 50's. My mother had a job because she wanted one and had the contacts to have one. My dad had his own business and did not want her there. Even though she worked, she still kept the house, handled the laundry, including ironing and cooked dinner. In the 60's they had gone to seperate twin beds as they did not want any more children, abortion was out as was no fault divorce. We had dinner in the kitchen Mon through Sat with Sun being reserved for the dining room and practicing our manners, inc. keeping our elbows off the table and knowing whom was to be seated where. Until my mom died, she always cooked the meals, took care of the house and laundry. Did dad get his way all the time, not really because I got my way from about age 8 on as my grandparents, his parents, thought I was the best thing going. He did not talk back to his parents and neither did my mom. Hope this gives you an idea of what a fifties household was like from my recollection. Possibly somebody in their 60's can give you the best idea. I just am not that old yet.
