I do understand exactly what you mean, Muttling. A large factor is opportunity. More recent theories regarding criminal methodology exist due, largely, to profiling and talking extensively to criminals to identify M.O.s etc...

To the average person, a very large man is not considered a likely mugging target, but then, to an opportunist that guy's size can be used against him. Friends of mine went to Brazil for a holiday, they were involved in two incidents during their two-week stay. My friends, both male, both big and cavalier in attitude regarding being mugged, "look at the size of us, no one will mess, we're fine, don't you worry" were mugged... they were hit and hit hard and before they could react the muggers were off, much smaller, considerably lighter and therefore much faster and away into the crowd, leaving my friends wondering 'what the &!$K!'.  The 'Steamers', that are rife in Brazil, tended not to target them.

While I am aware of what you describe and agree, it's not entirely in line with the research that has been done in the U.S.

I'm talking about criminals who pick targets out of a crowd then follow them or do a smash n dash.   I used to have a rather in depth paper that described multiple interviews with muggers and many of them had been caught on tape watching people go by.   They frequently passed on the type of person your description would call the perfect target and often went after people who didn't fit with your description (including large men).

It was really insightful on the subject of how NOT to make yourself a target and the BIGGEST factor time after time after time was "Did they notice me?"   They absoluely love to target people with their hands full of crap, talking on the cell phone, and not paying attention to their surroundings.

On a related note, if you remain aware of your surroundings and spot something that doesn't seem right you have opportunity to a better location.   Thereby preventing the attack before it starts.

I hate to say it, but you have serious issues none of which self-help books will even touch upon.

Her caning arm is still in action... she even frightens me when she's going at full throttle!

Last year I had her permission to go into her wardrobe to get something only for me to come face to face with an outfit that looked like something off the set of Grease'... Think Olivia Newton John in tight leather pants, off the shoulder top and gold coloured stilettos and that's the outfit she had. She's 80 for crying out loud! I shut the door quickly resigning myself to NEVER going in her wardrobe again!

Still want me calling you 'Daddy'?
"You're the one that I want... oooh oooh oooh!" lol

........er......did your cat walk over your keyboard at an inopportune moment?

That's one quirky cat, or a dictionary plug-in (ala T9) for the browser.

May I propose that the cat may have meowed, and that we blame the rest on voice recognition software?

Health,

All this does is promote fear....It should be placed on the back every piece of currency that exists in the U.S.

"Out of fear we shall respond."

You have to keep your head out of your ass. You can't be blind to the fact that there is "bad" out there. I have to laugh at those who are so quick to pick up a gun to insure their safety...They just seem like such cowards...Unable to deal with the world.

The world is not a bad space. Bad things have and will always continue to happen. You can watch the tele and be overwhelmed or you can turn it off and go out and enjoy your day...Which camp are you in?

Domiguy, nothing gets the adrenalin pumping quicker than fear. "There is nothing to fear but fear itself."

Of course the world itself isn't a bad place, I don't view it that way and i seriously doubt many do.

In some cultures, public executions are still in existence with families turning out for the occasion, clapping and jeering as the man is anally impaled.

Cultures may be different, but when the sun rises and falls, and when all our refinements are removed we're all still people with those same primal instincts.

Look back in time, not fifteen or twenty years, but fifteen hundred or two thousand, and the intervening space. The more things change in this world, the more they stay the same.

'Used to' is quite appropriate. I found that when training in wado ryu/muay thai I wasn't able to react instinctively. Always thinking of the next move, I found it mentally exhausting and many years later, I remember very little of my original teachings.

Thank you for your great insights, Aswad.

It's actually a fairly public spectacle some places in the US, as well. The difference is that, just as violence is being dumbed down in the movies, so too it is being hidden from view during the executions. Doesn't prevent people from standing around cheering about how a human being is about to "fry." Nor does it stop locals from selling memorabilia or even "execution burgers." (Can't recall the name, but it was mentioned on a documentary that dealt with the phenomena.)

Indeed. Although Wado ryu seems to be better off in this regard than many forms of karate; may be their Ju Jutsu influence.

A lot of people don't realize it, but Ju Jutsu encompasses armed combat, headbutts, and all sorts of stuff they rarely teach these days.

I'm afraid I don't have any great insights to offer, but thanks for the compliment anyway.

Health,

Ms Morrigan, your mention of the Glasgow Kiss, reminds me of a dear friend who was a bouncer, not built like a brick s*** house, all of five seven maybe ten stone(140lb), not ya typical bouncer, in fact his job title unofficially was the "bouncer for mothercare".
very quiet chap, innocuous, but he was from the gorbals, and could execute a glasgow kiss in the blink of an eye. Ive seen him many a time lay out a huge guy without breakin a sweat. He had the healthy respect of all his co workers.
I must call him and see how he is doin:)

The infamous Glaswegian Kiss, Lucy!

When I was in my teens and pretty racy, I used to get into a club in Worthing, West Sussex. On weekends, they usually had one doorman (now there are two to three) and the doorman himself was a huge man, head clean shaven, ham fists and he clearly looked 'the business'. Now and again, as you can imagine, a few drunken guys would create a nuisance and the big guy would try and remonstrate peacefully with them. I once witnessed such a commotion and the doorman threatened to get 'head of security'. "Guys, if you persist I will have to get Head of Security. I'm a kitten in comparison to this guy, you really do not want to mess with him as his reputation speaks for itself." That was enough for the lads, they'd bugger off elsewhere and so this 'Head of Security' languished in his notoriety... In all the years I went to that club, NO ONE had ever seen this person, much less suffered his wrath. A year or so later, I got chatting to one of the club workers and I mentioned the 'black dog' that everyone is fearful of on the club scene. He laughed himself silly, told me that this fearsome head of security was non existent and the doorman based his fictitious description on a guy he knew that was the exact opposite. I laughed so hard when he told me and I haven't shared that with anyone else until NOW almost 30 years later! I'm surprised no one called his bluff lol
