I remember when...

When tv's had no remote and only about six channels.  It was high tech when cable finally came to town and you had the cable box with 20 channels to pick.  And then you always tripped over the cable that ran aross the room.

My first video game was pong.  lol

Albums.  I mentioned one to my seven year old and she had no clue what I was talking about.

MsLadySue -> RE: I remember when (2/9/2008 6:03:23 AM)

Going to the movies was $1.00 and with treats you didn't spend more than $2 total. The bus cost 50 cents.

I remember when Marvel Comics cost 12 pence each and buying a pile each weekend.

MsLadySue, you'd love London - the cinema costs £10 nowadays (about $20) and sometimes more...

I remember when........
Cigarette commercials were on tv. Smoking was allowed in hospital rooms, court houses (All government buildings) and grocery stores. Also on every soap opera I watched, all the ladies smoked lol

Quick story here..
I was admitted the night before to have my toncils removed. I stayed up and talked all nnigth with my room mate and we smoked all night. The next morning, when they came to get me for surgery, I had the worst sore throat lol they sent me home to heal and rescheduled the surgery.

<walks away singing> Taste me..taste me..come on and taste me...(Doral cigarette jingle)

Not funny, but how strange that the marlboro man (what a hunk!) died of cancer.

PS: I dont know why I have smokes on the brain. But I would love to have one now.

Werent those the days? The excitement of the arm rising magically, the table starting to turn, the crackly intro to every piece.... not dancing too close to the set for fear of scratches, yet getting scratches anyway.......and then on a rainy Sunday afternoon, carefully guiding the stylus along the grooves to take the scratches and jumps out...... and taping every single one onto cassettes

All my albums and singles are under the bed now....unplayed since the mid 90s when I finally got CDs. I remember being told they could scratch and couldnt jump - and yet, they do.

I remember my UMs' reaction to my vinyl records when I retrieved them one day from their underbed grave... and the amazement they experienced when I got the cassettes and a very old but still working recorder and taped them talking.....

When you could loose yourself in the middle of nowhere without people knowing where you were or contacting you on mobile phones.
When terrorists phoned you to tell you where the bombs were, not always though.
When I could walk through the footpath under the Thames and no one cared about the leaky roof.
When you could watch a film without freezing to death from the air conditioning
When all you needed to explore the world was a bicycle, turns out the world is bigger than I thought.
When you could look up at the sky and see the stars even in London.
When strange men would drive around neighbourhoods asking for scrap metal.
When your best friend lived no more than four doors away.

Me again <s>

I remember when...
The Vietnam war ended with the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.. I remember the radio station played all the war and anti-war songs. My favorite being: Eve Of Destruction and Abraham, Martin and John. I also remember where I was and what I was doing the day that Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a dream" was shot and just two months later,  Robert (Bobby) Kennedy "Some folks see things as they are and ask why. I dream dreams that never were and ask, 'Why not?" was also shot and killed.  I will always remember those two events clearly.

They had made the leap to 15 cents when I began to buy them; I remember reading Stan's Soapbox, and loving how Marvel made you feel like a part of an extended family, in a way.

It is easy to go back to this one. Don't have a mobile phone. You can still get lost in the middle of nowhere :)

MistressVnus -> RE: I remember when (2/9/2008 7:06:57 AM)

Geeeesh, I remember all that and the day I watched the funeral for John F. Kennedy, and John Jr. doing his little salute.
I think I was about 5.  I started crying.

I remember when hitchiking all over town (or cross cournty) wasn't dangerous.

I remember when you could sneak into the juke joints in Chicago with no I.D. whatsoever as long as you were with a few older friends.

I remember being able to buy cigs and beer w/o being carded.

I remember TJ Swan (Easy Nights and Mellow Days) and Ripple wine.

I remember windowpane, purple microdot, and orange barrels.   (hehehehehhehehe)

I remember the huge rolling paper that came out of the Cheech N Chong album, "Big Bamboo"

I remember doupers and greasers.

I remembe when you could shoot pool for .25 cents.

I'm sure there is more.  But, you get the picture.

Hmm..that leads me to wonder..how so many people had jobs without the use or invention of the cell phone? There used to be this thing..that plugged into a wall jack and you could operate it just as easily as a cell phone, if not easier.
No mobile phone, no job? How is that so?

i remember the smell of a new doll on Christmas, that sweet new plastic smell.  i remember patterns from McCalls for 50 cents and fabric was .99 a yard and it was fun to make clothes not just for myself but for the doll as well, and when 10 speed bikes came out, and to be so proud the have the first color TV on the block, the great big one with the four legs and wood cabinet.  When Sundays were for everyone to go to church and go home, and NOTHING was open, absolutely nothing.  lol, so nice to remember, what a cool thread
