...gas was .30 a gallon

...when a kid could go out and play and came home--safe
...the fall of the Berlin wall
...Dr's came to YOU

i remember patterns from McCalls for 50 cents and fabric was .99 a yard and it was fun to make clothes not just for myself but for the doll as well

I was just thinking about this the other day when I was at the fabric store! Patterns are outrageous now.

That's what I remember.  When it was actually cost efficient to do something/make something/create something instead of purchasing it.

Ok, don't tell anyone..but..
The first time I hitched I was going to Long Beach from Pomona, Calif. This guy picked me up, and the man told me that he had lost his pecker (His word, not mine!) in the war and the only way he could get off was to spank young girls. He asked me if I wanted to make a ton of money, I told him sure why not? He offered me 20.00 a whack if I agreed to be spanked! lol THAT was the extent of my submissive side! I made 200.00 dollars before I told him to stop. I was 15 years old. Wow, how totally stupid of me. But...I am who I am today..because of who I was..yesterday.

No mobile phone, no job? How is that so?

It's a pressure thing; your competitors are contactable 24 hours a day 7 days a week so must you be. Maybe it's just the need not to compete I long for but realistically I have to also provide for my future existence and have the same standard of living in the future as all the others who enjoy constant work. Its similar to inflation really, inflation is greed we all ask for more and more all the time, so the cost of living goes up. Just ask Gordon Brown how much the police should be paid compared with the teachers and how much the teachers should be paid in relation to the hospital staff. We all live in the same world and so have to pay for the same things. If I’m not contactable on the mobile someone else is.

I don't want to compete but I have to to survive.[8|]

Hmm..that leads me to wonder..how so many people had jobs without the use or invention of the cell phone? There used to be this thing..that plugged into a wall jack and you could operate it just as easily as a cell phone, if not easier.
No mobile phone, no job? How is that so?

MoGa

WALL JACK? Nope. Wired RIGHT INTO THE block. The good old Western Electric phones, from the days when Western Electric OWNED THEM and only rented them to you. You could take one of those phones, and bludgeon someone to death, and *THEN* make a call. They were really "Built to Last"... WE mod. 500's were in production for FORTY YEARS.

The WE 302's which preceded them were good for 20 years.

I'm lucky if my mobile makes it through a contract commitment.

MH, please excuse this short hi-jack for just a second :)

sl4,
Take a weekend off, leave the mobile phone at home and indulge yourself in losing yourself just for a weekend. How fun that would be, and how much better could you feel? :)

Hi-Jack over <s>

wow did that bring back something from my past!  when i was a kid (10 years old), i'd ride the bus or hitch hike to long beach most friday nights, (an escape for me from a bad home situation).  i'd have a big sack lunch and a towel and i'd sleep on the beach until sunday came and i'd go back home, it was one of the best times of my life in some ways and i was too young and naiive to understand the danger i was in but it was a hell of a lot of fun and i met some wonderful people.

- Buying 45s for about $1 and stacking them up on my record player
- Playing with metal jacks, a Big Wheel Racer, and building forts outside all day long
- Shirts were buttoned all the way up to the neck

GreedyTop -> RE: I remember when (2/9/2008 7:36:12 AM)

hitchhiking.. wow.  I used to go back and forth cross country like that.  Thats how I ended up becoming a truck driver for 20+ years.
I used to thumb to Santa Monica, Hollywood, all over the L.A. area.

*sigh*

Now, I wouldn't DREAM of it.

KatyLied -> RE: I remember when (2/9/2008 8:11:02 AM)

I remember colorforms
Betsy Mccall cutouts and how my grandma would always save those pages especially for me
incredible edibles and how my brother and I would spend hours making them

GreedyTop -> RE: I remember when (2/9/2008 8:13:12 AM)

I don't think so!!  Hell, $200 was a hell of a lot just for a spanking.  My parents were spanking me and I wasn't getting a dime...LOL
I remember giving people these sob stories about my parents kicking me out (or my g/f and I would say we were sisters and kicked out) and being hungry (usually I had just disappeared for days) and they would hand me $10 or $20 bucks before I got out of the car.  That took care of the wine, cigs, and windowpane for the w/e.  *chuckle*
We used to hitch-hike downtown to Lincoln Park in Chicago very weekend and just hang out there.  Sleep right in the park.  You could do that then.  Not anymore.
Those were the days.

KatyLied -> RE: I remember when (2/9/2008 9:10:45 AM)

I remember riding our bikes around town for hours on a Saturday afternoon, no worries about perverts grabbing us.  I remember a time when no one locked their front door or their car door.  I remember a time when you didn't im a person who lived a few doors down from you (a thing my kids tend do to).

I remember the 1st Sesame Street episodes.

We had a milkman and guy that drove around with a vegetable truck.

There was also an old Italian guy who would sharpen your knife or scissors on a little hand cart he pushed around.He sang Italian songs as he strolled.

Seat belts were an option in many cars and gas was 30 cents a gallon.
