One could argue, though, that the police's job comes short of crime prevention. It might be a good idea to add this to their list of "to do's"?

Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic staggering number, perhaps an all time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less that one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Living in Chicago...I agree that the chance of facing a violent crime are rare....I can attest to the fact that my friends as well as myself, all of us white and professional, have had much worse run ins with the police aka "sheepdogs" then the "wolves."

The police are an illusion of protection....Ask the five women murdered at Lane Bryant...What do you expect the police to do?

They are an "after the incident" response system...They routinely solve crimes because of civilian cooperation or the information of other criminals. There is no miracle "police work." They are not necessarily heroes. They can be heroes.

"“Then there are the sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I am a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.” If you have no capacity for violence, then you are a healthy, productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking a hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed."

It would seem that someone has delusions of granduer. Walk out unscathed? How many cops abuse alcohol or drugs, beat their wives or kids or commit suicide?....How many cops, "sheepdogs" feed on the lambs?

"The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog that intentionally harms the lowest, little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours."

What a load of crap! Punished and removed my ass! The sheep don't like the sheepdog cuz they are assholes. They use racial profiling. They are lazy. They have forgotten why they joined the force....They will never "punish or remove" one of their own unless absolutely forced...Their union will protect them...Regardless of whether they are beating up a defenseless bartender, shooting up a car or speeding on the wrong side of the road and killing innocent "sheep."

When I step out of the house I am much more concerned with having a shitty run in with my "protective blue egg shell" then a brown or white criminal...The criminal is going to do their thing regardless of whether there is a sheep dog a mile away or not...the cops are an opportunity feeder.....Give them the opportunity and they will feed.

No thank you...I'll still stick with the criminals. I will know to expect the worse and never be disappointed. Cops...I still expect some glimmer of hope....So fucking sad.

Drew Peterson was a cop....He was in good company.

Thank you subtee for sharing this thought. What you shared has opened my eyes to another view and that made me a little bit more wiser and I thank you.

SugarMy Churro: I had hoped that you would at least acknowledge that there are others who are able to maintain a more positive outlook on law enforcement in the grand scheme of things but apparently that isn't so. It is very sad that the usage of the terms "sheep" "sheepdog" are done metaphorically, not literally. Granted I could rant on and on and begin insulting you regarding your opinions though that will not get us anywhere, even though I disagree with you I also accept the fact that our views are too polarized to even find a commonality. I bid you and this topic farewell and my only wish is that you receive all that you richly deserve,. Be Well.

'We the People' does not translate to 'The nanny state owes me', (It would have been more effective though, if you had some patriotic music playing in the background and a fan blowing your hair while you recited it through a little reverb ).

Nobody owes you a personal bodyguard, or the kow-towing personal servant you demanded (least of all the rest of the taxpayers), any more than they owe you the 'right' to fly 'your' Space Shuttle whenever you feel like it..

The police do not "protect" me or anyone else. They at best respond after the fact--and necessarily so, since they cannot be called until the moment of crime at the very earliest.

I have no need of a nanny state nor of a personal bodyguard. I am quite prepared and willing to defend myself and my household. What I want from the government, and especially from the police, is for them to go away. Failing that, let them come around me hat in hand.

What do you mean "you two?"

Everyone knows that the game is "good cop, bad cop"

I call it!....I get to be bad cop first. It will be such fun as the two of us have a "go at her."

Problemo numero uno: I loathe uniforms. With a vengeance: must be the anarchist in me.

Secondly: surely, we can do better than indulge in this pathetically cliched "good/bad" dichotomy. How about we're all fucking bastards, for a change ;-) ?

Ah but thompy, if you're part of the equation, it changes everything. For you, I think I'll be too happy to don a bad cop uniform  . Bat on!

The republicans call it "tort reform".That`s a fancy word for ~~ you`re completely fucked~~.

If you`re injured by a Dr.,product,cop/LEO or government agent, you won`t be able to do anything about it.

(as usual I am cutting and pasting onto these fuck the cops threads...)

It is unfortunate that there are so many here on CM that have become so overwrought with suspiscion that anyone that says anything about these abuse threads is either worried to be part of that paranoid mentality or gets attacked for pointing out that not all law enforcement is this law enforcement.

Bad things happen at times, they shouldn't but they do.  In every single profession there are those that probably shouldn't be in the job.  There are good garbage men and bad garbage men too.  It does not make me believe that all garbage men are evil and out to destroy the world.  Yes, it's an exaggeration, but my god it's what all these threads sound like.  Seriously people, yes, support those that are wronged, but for god's sakes get a grip on reality.  Everyone in a uniform isn't out to get you, most of them would like nothing more than to help you when you needed it.  If you truly believe that statement isn't true, consult with a professional.

And on the record this time scifi, thank you for what you do and I'm sorry others can't see beyond their paranoia to realize what a thankless and difficult job being in law enforcement can be.

domi, I do feel for you, Chicago is a horrible example of law enforcement and when they started actually doing "investigations" into the corruption what was uncovered is the investigators were worse than those they were investigating.  However, that's not ALL law enforcement and the majority of posts here don't seem to recognize that.

I don't believe that for one second, nor could I ever agree with it.

Just as we are deeply suspicious of politicians, so must we be of policing authorities. The temptations of corruption, the inducement of a broad range of powers, and a general legal invulnerability make this so.

I would be in favor of taking away many of the powers that the police now have to harass our people. And the search and seizure rulings of the last 20+ years have probably made this an eventual necessity.

When the law is a whore those upholding it are her pimps. There is therefore no reason for undue respect for the office.

Sorry.
