(Yes, I'm aware that I'm using an unfair and possibly offensive stereotype in how I choose to ask the question.    Feel free to substitute an alternate metaphor, but Obama and his supporters are going to have deal with with worse than this over the campaign.  Consider it a training exercise.)

Beyond the economy, beyond our troops in Iraq, the next person to sit in the Oval Office will also be dealing with the threat of the Islamic Crazy People.  IMO, the only way to address that is from a position of strength.  We need a President those people will fear just a bit more than they hate, someone who can look them right in the eye when the car bombs go off.

A President needs something that radiates "don't go there."  They need a scary side, sometimes, that won't back down.

Nixon had it and used it on domestic 'enemies' as well as foreign ones.  Eisenhower had so much of it he spent his terms playing golf.  Reagan had it with the USSR.  Bush I faked it.  Clinton I(?) prefered to be a smiling, good-ol'-boy appeaser, but he did park a bomb on the Chinese embassy when required.  What we don't need is another Carter.

I'm still looking at the current crop.  McCain has flashed his a few times over the years.  Hillary seems quite capable of going completely psycho as required (though I wonder sometimes).  I was really hoping for Giuliani.  After mafia dons and NYC unions, he could stare anybody down.

What about Barak Obama?  Is there something there that will make the ICP say "oh shit?"  I keep thinking of Spike Lee's Bamboozled.  Could Barak get all ghetto on your ass if he had to?  Crack his neck and say, "Oh no you di'n't, muthahfuckah!" before doing a drive-by on your mama's house?  Can he be the craziest person in the room?  The very last person on the planet you want to piss off?

Hey - to summon another unfair and possibly offensive stereotype - he's a well built black guy - I thought that scared the bejesus out of most people, including other black guys?

I dunno about *reality*. You sorta believe that Guiliani did something of note regarding the Mob and Unions in NYC.

If you think so, you obviously haven't tried to do any business in NYC recently -- Hell, they shut down Grease, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Wicked, Rent, Hairspray and Legally Blond with a stagehand strike before the holiday season last year.

I'm not sure the rest of your premises hold up under scrutiny.

That said.

IT'S ALL FAKE. The "Winner" has been decided LONG AGO, and you should be careful to not let yourself get fooled by the smoke and mirrors of the special effects in the show.

You're fooling yourself if you think your vote counts.

The candidate that could/would create the most fear in others, in my opinion, would be McCain. But, I don't know that is what we need, necessarily. As long as our president will use force, if needed, that's the main thing, and I believe all 4 remaining candidates would do so.

The jihadists will never run out of those willing to do whatever they see as their "duty", and fear won't help, there. I mean, if they aren't afraid of President Bush, then who will scare them?

The problem is, America might still have the military hardware but it's not as feared as it once was, though by many in the world it is still seen as the world's most dangerous state but is America willing to fuck its economy up any more than it is now?

I always thought fear of America would diminish if it invaded Iraq and it has. Iran while understanding the damage the US could inflict, isn't that scared of the US anymore. There are too many possible consequences the US might have to face if it illegally invades another country.

The USSR wasn't scared of Reagan, it had just rotted away from the inside long before Reagan was president and was impotent. That being said, the US was as wary of the USSR as the USSR was of the US.

If the next President starts pretending to be He-Man, he won't get much accomplised in foreign affairs, just like Bush has accomplished nothing. In fact Bush will be leaving office with US foreign affairs in a far far far worse state than when he came to office.

I love "offensive" stereotypes!
Probably because I don't like the type of people who would be "offended" by them. The anal-retentive "politically correct". "C'mon, s-t-r-e-t-c-h  that anus!"
Any president (manager) could get the job done by simply dropping a nuke on Syria or Iran. "Oops! Sorry, won't do it again."
Iran is stepping up to be the next tough guy on the block so you drop a nuke on them.
"What, Imanutjob was incinerated in the blast?" "O.K. put whoever's next in like on the phone please."
I don't want a government that's concerned with "human rights" in foreign countries.
I want a government that get's the job done.
I'd prefer some Mafioso in Washington over lawyers in suits who smile at you as they're stealing our money.
At least you'd know that the "Crew" wouldn't take any shit from people in other countries like the college boys do and they'd of course want to protect "our thing"!
"Hey Bobby, send over some proscuitto, we're gonna drop a bomb!"

What Bush and his administration have singularly failed to understand I think, is that playing the heavy doesnt necessarily intimidate people but always stiffens their resolve to resist.

Whilst one must have the power to call on in last resort, its often more productive to present a more conciliatory and friendly face to the world, in getting people to do what you'd like them to do. Calling up some more unfair stereotypes, this is where Hilary could be the best candidate - because women are said to be more accomplished at this sort of thing. But I'd rather she was VP under Obama.

That would be a stereotype, as I'm not at all sure Hillary is seen as a fence-mender, or peace-maker.

Hillary is going to have to throw a few bombs around before she is taken seriously by a lot of the world that is more Chauvanistic than the West.   Appealing to he is being mean to me, won't work at all on the world stage, despite it gettting votes with American White Women.  She will be having to go into a room with Putin and no cameras, is she going to act scared that he approaches her with a piece of paper?  It worked to get here elected to the Senate, but.....

Barak would probably have a much stronger image ot the world, for sterotype reasons.  He's no Idi Amin, but that's more than needed.  I think he would be able to pull off the threat of violence with no problem.  Again, think of him and Putin in a room with no press....

Here we go again…rightwing leaning… the sky is falling…safety at any cost…lights on and under the covers scare-d-cats.

There is a battle to be fought….but we need to fight it from the side of right not fear. Bush and his policies have alienated our friends and strengthened our enemies.

There is no reason we can’t restore the respect of the world and fight extremist radicals at the same time.

Changes in policy towards the Middle East may very well aid us in the fight.

These aspects are always going to be some kind of stereotype, though I think with the power of the presidency behind it, archetype is the more accurate term.  For Reagan, it was the crazy cowboy, Ike was a victorious general, Nixon was ruthless, LBJ and Clinton did the southern gentleman with a mean streak.  Bush I and II have tried for the tough guy with less than spectacular results.

It isn't so much about using the military power, Meat, as it is about insuring others understand that you aren't afraid to.

"is that playing the heavy doesnt necessarily intimidate people but always stiffens their resolve to resist. "   Sort of like smashing planes into our buildings?   Or funding terrorists to screw up a peace deal in a region of vital importance to the world economy?  Those seem like Heavy acts to me.

Part of the problem (not that I am advocating changing it, it also has many good benefits which outweigh) with having elections and term limits, is that every new government gets tested.

This is a product of idle hands and to much free time...

Very sad,but not untypical.

This is more of a reflection of the writer and not about who he`s writing about.

That Putin bastard is sketchy, isn't he? Those cold fish eyes.... the martial arts training,..... the likelihood of him having killed some poor bastard with his bare hands....

I don't know, Rich, Bush 1 was pretty stern when he said he'd never eat broccoli again.
