BOSTON - Harvard University has banned men from one of its gyms for a few hours a week, a move to accommodate Muslim women who, for religious and cultural reasons, cannot exercise comfortably in their presence.

The policy is already unpopular with many on campus, however, including some women who consider it sexist.

"I think that it's incorrect in a college setting to institute a policy in which half of the campus gets wronged or denied a resource that's supposed to be for everyone," said student Lucy Caldwell, who also wrote a column in The Harvard Crimson newspaper critical of the new hours.

When is Islam going to move out of the dark ages? I mean it isn't even in the middle ages yet...it's still in the dark ages!

Like I've said many, many times....that religion badly needs a reformation period.

Frequently, swimming pools in England have "ladies morning", to accommodate those women who wish to swim in a female only environment. I see nothing wrong with it *shrug* - just as there's nothing wrong if men wish to exercise in the absence of women. Strangely enough though, this hardly ever seems to happen  . I say, good for Harvard.

It's against my religion to exercise in a gym unless there are 26 women and no other men present.

Publicly or privately owned?

The issue is, if you're going to deny people use of a facility that they are helping to pay for, based on their gender, in the U.S., you've gotta have a damned good reason. If i decide to start the University of Dave, and deny female students access to the automotive engineering lab because, well, we all know that women can't drive, there are going to be serious problems.

Honestly, i'm surprised that Muslim women that devout are even attending college, but maybe i'm just absorbing too much conservative media.

Bah... until the sexual revolution, gender segregation was pretty much de facto, wasn't it? And rightly so. All this friskiness between sexes, well, it's sickening. Youth of today, most shocking behaviour... And they demand it! Outrageous. Mumble, grumble, murmbumgle grumbelbebum.

I don't know whether the media you absorbe is conservative, but it's certainly selling ignorance, if that's what you hear from them.

Yup.Con media isn`t much on knowledge or insight.

It`s more about fear and ignorance. The good part is it fits on a bumper sticker and is easy to remember.

Curves is a place women pay to be separate from men. A public place suddenly banning men is ridiculous. If you don't want to work out in front of a man, either stay home or go to Curves or whatever. Don't hamper one sex because YOU don't want to work out in front of someone else.

On the surface I don't personally see anything much wrong with it.  And I am sure there will be some sort of law suit soon.
I am more confused about the headline of the thread and the reference about accomodating Muslim women in the article.  It could lead one to assume that this is a time for Muslim women only to exercise, as opposed to (any) "women only" time.  And I am thinking that this is an incorrect conclusion. Yes?  No? At any rate, I don't like that wording of the article.
And they should also have a "male only" time for those who prefer the company of other men in the gym or are self conscious about their bodies and prefer to exercise out of the sight of the ladies they might hope to impress under different circumstances.  We all don't have wonderful six-packs to flaunt.

I have to agree with this, although I didn't think of it, Myself, until it was mentioned.  I would guess that this is less about modesty and more about religious restrictions which disallow fraternization with males except under very specific circumstances.  The article does state that this is a problem for these women due to religious and cultural reasons.  *shrug*  So why are they in a co-ed college and what are they studying?  Just something rhetorical to think about.  And are there that many Muslim women attending Harvard to justify this?  If our women were going to college in the Middle East, would they be given special consideration for their cultural (western) ways?
Yes, I am feeling a bit snotty tonight.
