Maybe the Catholic Church wants to compete with the Baptists and Evangelicals as far as "sins" go to "get to hell."
I had a crazy Baptist Minister who lived next door to me some years ago, well, until she was "let go" by the Baptist Church in town.
That was her answer to everything.
Play the stereo too loud? "You're going to HELL!"
Drinking beer? "You're going to HELL!"
Having a cookout and laughing and having fun? "You're going to HELL!"
What is it with those people? Everyone's going to "HELL!"
Of course (they're) never going to HELL for being pain in the ass neighbors, are they?
One time she was in the front yard preaching to no-one in particular and I told her, "take that shit downtown and go preach on the corner!"
Sure enough, the right arm goes up in the "Hitler salute" and,..."you're going to HELL!"
I'd had it with her and turned around and dropped trou and "nut-flapped" her.
Then I said, "no, YOU'RE going to HELL, the section where they have SEX all the time!" "COCKSUCKER!"
She was aghast.
Sheesh, there must be 10,000 ways to "go to hell" but maybe 3 ways to go to heaven.
It's called "manipulation through guilt induction."
Yeah, I guess another *human being* is going to decide who goes to hell.

LoL.

You should have just said "Oh? Be sure to save me a seat when YOU get there then!"

I wonder if number 3 (Drug Abuse) covers alcoholism?
Sure seems to be a lot of alcoholic Preists in the Catholic Church.

Now thats just silly

How do you expect them, without a practical demonstration, to learn fear for the iron rod of the lord?

I am proud to call myself a Catholic. However some of these new "sins" did make me chuckle. The art in the Vatican was commisioned by the Vatican in the middle ages and renaissance. It is priceless, not worthless, and most of the Church's wealth is actually tied up in that. Popes and priests live a long time because most of them are pious people who eat simply, don't drink that much, and rarely smoke. (I've known alot of priests and only seen 2 drink more than a drink with parishoners and one smoking his pipe). The wine drank during communion is a representation of the blood of Christ, and it is not even enough to wet your lips. Symbolism. We have dominion over the earth. One day we are going to die and what happens here won't matter a whole lot. People give to the Church out of faith, I fail to see the demands of my local diocese to give them money. Excessive wealth is kind of self explanatory, look at the oil companies who gouge prices so they can have private jets. And burning the ballots? tiny pieces of paper, from roughly a hundred men, who may gather once or twice a lifetime....zero impact as far as I am concerned. And sex with altar boys has always been against Church Law...

My point is this. Try learning something before you bash it. There are more than One billion Catholics on Earth....so try to learn a bit.

Does anyone even really LISTEN to catholics anymore? I thought we all kinda regarded them like the lil brother who has to wear the helmet when he rides the short bus to school.

LMAO!  As another lapsed catholic girl, I totally lost my "work face" on this one.

Huh...  . Whatever freakery people want to believe in is up to them - I thought that mass was like watching magicians on stage. I know: I went, once (I thought I was going to die from an attack of the Middle-Ages lol).

I was raised Catholic as well, "Irish-Catholic" in Boston.
I just don't want to be a part of a church that tells people that they're "going to hell" all the time.
Where's the draw in that?
I don't really care for organized religion much anyway.
And, the Catholic Church seems to have a blind spot when it comes to obeying the law.

and here I was expecting a knock down drag out brawl. The sad thing is people who go out of obligation and social standing. Anyhow, I am done with this one unless someone says something truly outrageous.

Oh and I have never heard a priest tell anyone they were going to hell, and I grew up Irish Catholic as well and had an Irish priest...must have just been you popeye

Considering the amount of lapse Catholics I encounter on a regular basis, there doesn't seem to be  much "draw" in the Church. They need better PR, and a serious refurbishing of their fundamental beliefs - they're stuck in a timewarp. I respect people who go quietly about their religious beliefs without clamoring to know how others should behave; I particularly like monks, for example. And those that act upon their faith as a step to spirituality, and who don't use religion as a way to bash other people.

The problen with the Church is that it is responsible for a lot of social ill - and that it's continuing to push through its criminal policies upon gullible people.

Dominor, we had a Preist growing up who'd be swaying on the alter.
And there was a place up in Gloucester, Mass for "retired and alcoholic Preists."
And now it seems "The Church" is actively aiding and abetting illegal aliens in the U.S.
Funny, they don't do that in any other countries though.

Pope Ben, new CEO for Catholic business interests; decided to add some more sins to the litany:
Loosely, the seven social sins are:
1. Biothetic violations such as birth control
2. "Morally dubious" experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty
Source: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/us_world/2008/03/10/2008-03-10_pope_identifies_7_new_sins_including_pol.html

*************************************

Well...let's see....
#1 ....OK....an out of control population explosion ....leads to #7....so....you can't control births EXCEPT...to not have sex.....well...that's consistent with Catholic doctrine at least....

#2 ...."morally dubious" experiments like STEM CELL RESEARCH? ....lol...ok...so it is not morally dubious to allow people to continue to die by the thousands, from diseases such research could cure?  Well..at least he is not saying that this is another reason not to have sex.

#3 ....drug abuse ...OK....you become addicted and you lose your ability to emply cognitive thinking. Everyone I know who has a drug problem, has a living hell going on every day.....so...after the hell you create for yourself...you get to visit the big one too? ....I guess things like forgiveness, charity, and helping the sick....do not apply to these poor folks...especially since they might be having sex too.

#4 ...polluting the environment ......ok....so you work for a company that adds to pollution....oil company, mining company, automaker, disposable diaper maker, chemical company, power plant, dog walkers, Hilary Clinton Campaign, etc.....I suppose that to avoid hell...you have to quit your job. Soooooo...let's see...that sorta ties into #7 too....BUT....it certainly clears you on #5 and 6 ...so like the gloabal warming fantasy...do you get "credits" you can apply?....sort of a "Get OutOf Hell Free" card?...because you trashed your income to avoid polluting?  I guess they really would be "carbon combustion" credits in so hot a place. And....has anyone done an emissions check on hell?

#5 ....ahhhh..yes...you are now immoral if you make money....more than say the folks on the wrong side of the tracks. Hmmm...this is a tough one for Vatican, Inc. This is the same church, that threw my three grandkids out of Catholic School a few weeks ago....publically...because their mom was 4 weeks late with the tuition. Of course she is going through a divorce and stuck with all the bills....but then we can't let charity and caring get in the way of business. Nor can we perhaps sell off a few hundred million in art work....or perhaps the legal bills for all the sicko priests are just too big to cut anyone slack.....anyway...I paid the bill and hopefully gained a credit or two on my own hell ticket. Of course by helping my daughter....I adided in increasing the gap between she and those less fortunate financially...so....looks like I'm back in the hopper.

#6 .....excessive wealth. .....geez....you think they might want to look inside Vatican, Inc. for this one????....lol...hre is a quote...direct...from a church wag defending an traveling exhibit of Vatican art.....sit down for this one.....

"All of these items (in the exhibit) are of great historical value and great artistic value," he said. "But really, they are a demonstration of the faith of a people. Anyone who views the display will very strongly feel the faith of the church, as exhibited for 2,000 years. So we believe it will be a faith-enriching moment."

I'm trying to imagine the Gambino family using THAT defense in court...."Yeah, your honor....this loot is worth a fuckin fortune....but really it's just helps our people have faith in us....it's...what?...a fuckin faith enrichin moment..."

finally...Lucky #7 .....creating poverty. I love this one. The Catholic grade school my grandkids go to.....( to avoid havint to attend Fort Apache Middle School....where .22 handguns were found in not one...but three 10 year old's lockers..).charges.....$3,400.00 per year...PER CHILD...but....they have tuition assistance!...it's true....IF...you help out at bingo ...(I swear...) and if their "need consulting firm" says you pass the litmus test......you get a small helping hand. My daughter, with an income of $32k per year and three kids....plus a bitter divorce and a mortgage foreclosure and a disabled child who needs $1,150 a month in medication...."has too high an income to qualify for assistance"....yet....the diocese funds 100% of the tuition for a "disadvantaged"  illegal alien family. After all, we have to show charity to those less fortunate whom the INS has yet to catch up with.  No...wait...the illegal mom....cleans the rectory?......Ahhhhhhh.... (That whole term..."rectory"....and given all the butt fucking that went on in "rectories" all over the place.....sure sounds an appropo name. )

....signed; "Victim of 12 Years Catholic Education".  :)
