Well a Gorean free woman has pretty much the same status as a freeman. The only change being that she submits to her husband under contract. And yes, it should have been asked there-not here.

RCdc -> RE: free woman????????????? (3/20/2008 2:35:08 PM)

I once saw the definition (and this is a loose translation, not exact) that a free woman gives up her rights to slavery for the right to have children and a slave gives up birth to be enslaved.

Free women still had considerable power in thier society. They were only under contract on a yearly basis-and could leave at the end of that period. And thier partner would suffer considerable loss in face if they did. Only about ten percent of the overall population were enslaved.

They had jobs, professions caste status, made and accumulated wealth. They didn't NEED to be married to do that-and not all did. People focus so much on the "hot slave" aspects of the books, that they seem to totally ignore the rest of the culture. I find that pretty silly-it's like being attention enslaved to a dog.

what?!!!  the books are not true?
who made that rule then?

you don't judge, but still you say it is not in line with what goreans see...lol
goreans are not even agreeing with eachother..

we just have the books....that is what I follow and my own thoughts/intepretation of it.

anyway I have different views on many things.

Well, I'm not gorean, and I know your not expecting an answer, but I would surmise that as a slave, you do as Master commanded once you are his.  I wouldn't see it much different to non gor slavery in that sense. (I am looking at it from a non book/fiction POV mind) but that makes sense to me.

I may get flamed by the men for saying this-but free Women were held accountable to the same conditions of honor. Slaves had none. Nor could they.

As such, there were levels of respect that had to be accorded to free women-where you could ignore it with a slave.

Justme696 -> RE: free woman????????????? (3/20/2008 2:45:02 PM)

a while ago I proposed to throw all lifestyles in one forum...no sub forums...because we are very capable to act alike...lol

some preach tollerance and then suddenly..it is gone in an other part of the forum..interesting

There is a clear Gorean distinction between a woman suitable in status and demeanor to bear free Hiers-and a woman to be used as property. It's like comparing apples and oranges-a distinction the majority in this thread seem to be missing.

Hense the suggestion that it might be more appropriate to ask it of goreans in the gorean forums. We be a bit clueless out here!

Don't you just love being compared to fruits? Apples and oranges, grapefruits and melons, squash and pumpkins...

PS: incidentally, the old "mother or whore" theme is old.

Absolutely I get that.  That statement I heard, and I can't remember where I heard or saw it, just stuck in my head and was just one of the few but from a personal POV I quite liked it.

they were respected indeed. But the view changes a bit from book to book.
There is always the tone to let them be slaves. A female needs it to be happy.
In the link in my previous post...you see different views on the free woman.

i remember in the first book I read (kajira of gor or slave girl of gor, I think). That a high official tells a free woman she is only granted to be free..because He wishes it.

"You were not struck for such and absurd reason," I said, "You are, after all a free woman, and free women are entitled to insult, and attempt to demean and destroy men. It is one of their freedoms, unless men, of course, should decide to take it from them. You were struck rather, because you were attempting to manipulate me." She nodded, putting her head down."Page 422 - Mercenaries of Gor

kittinSol -> RE: free woman????????????? (3/20/2008 2:51:30 PM)

How do they do contraception [:-] ? I mean, do slaves get overactomies? Do slaves get free botox injections when they start getting on a bit?

I wonder how the men deal with erectile disfunction, come a certain age... and what about body odour? Is it true that Gor guys are particularly well endowed with sweat glands (all that glistening over pumping muscle)?

Leatherist -> RE: free woman????????????? (3/20/2008 2:51:43 PM)

I've read most of the books over time, and the cultural aspects interested me more than the "fuck me slave" ones. So the structure and mores tended to stick in my mind more than the romance parts. (but I tend to be cold and geeky that way)

Let's remember that Lange did draw on historical precedents in his writing-he only origionated the sci fi bits. He was also a psych professor. And a really really bad english minor.

It varied by city and region, they all had differing cultures-it helped what little plot he used.

the earth doesn't pull as hard on the penis as on earth..so it is always errect :P

Justme696 -> RE: free woman????????????? (3/20/2008 2:55:01 PM)

yes I know

but he wasn't well at writing...
changing rules contradicts with what the goreans stand for...so it is confusing by times

Yes it is,and extremely old stereotype-from days before birth control. Men liked to know that thier children were thiers-back in days when inheritance really mattered.

Oh,the marvelous doctors of gor had come up with a serum that made you eternal, and they had contraceptive drinks for slaves. Like most fantasies-a pat answer for every contradiction.
