Something about this and i guess elements of this topic is screaming handmaids tale to me, has anyone read it? god thats a fucking scarey book.

Yeah... Atwood's nearly as bad a writer as Norman rofl.

Least no-one sections people off into coloured dresses based on their age and makes wives help their husbands fuck the youngens though thankful that no one jumped on that band wagon

the movie sucked ass... but the book ( which I had read waaay before) scared the shit out of me. It was written when the Religious Right was really begining to roll, and get political power. After seeing the last 7 years I can see how it would be possible. Look at the huge sections of the consitution that have become null and void because we had to be "protected" and how women and minorities are looked down on more now then 10 years ago... we are going backwords. Books have power as social comentary on what is the undercurrent going on in society. Normans books diffantly were a huge backlash at feminism and fustrations at "human men" lacking balls to control thier women. ~ at least that is what it apears on the surface.

Even the Star Trek books had social commentary when you think of the prime directive and how they interacted with societies.. and had thier own nere do wells.

I got in a nice fight over this a few weeks ago...on the gorean board.

I don't know, maybe it's because you're male and dominant but i've frequently seen a female who is not Gorean and asks a question be mobbed and generally flamed over there.  I don't blame the OP for being reluctant to post there, i wouldn't either.

I agree that is hard to post there. You already see here it is hard. IF you don't think like the group..you are not Gorean...that is often said to people.
I got my first "mod"warning in the second day on here. JUst for thinking differently.
It didn't keep me away. I guess..that is part of beeing gorean...beeing convinced...you way is the right way.... They go far in protecting their thoughts and ideas.
On the other side, while I don't mind rough talk, this prevents new people to enter. IT scares them off. There have been discussions "in the group"about this problem. And to be honest..I do see a little change in behaviour.

FOr me a person is more respectfull when they just tell me their opinion with out killing me. Thats counts for this part of the forum as the gorean part.
I hate beeing told I am not a real "gorean or bdsm-er". That is up to me..No one else. Especially when they accusers didn't even agree themselfs.
The problem is..not every one..takes those kind of attacks so easily. I give a sh*t..personally what people think about me., but others might even feel more hurt..afther they just "came out of the closet"with their feelings.

It is just about beeing "open" to eachother.....
It is not the lifestyles that are harsh..it is the person who acts like that.

i can and will retract comical....but i was just answering what someone had said...
excuse me wrong word....and i did not say the boards ...as i do read alot of them....

is amusing a better word....
as sometimes they do seem to have a problem agreeing amongst each other...

as for any other statments you think i should retract...i dont believe i said anything that anybody else hasnt said.....

i am not trying to prove anybody wrong......
as it is not what i was trying to do.......

Due to time difference, this thread has moved on a bit when I was in bed.
I don't know if amusing is any better (thats my personal opinion)  But kudos for being willing to interact.  Problems of disagreements do not occur only on the gorean board.  It happens here, the submissives, the masters, the mistress boards.  All of them.  You should take a look on the threads over on off topic!  It's not particularly 'gorean' - it's just people.  If everyone got along, life would be extremely boring and dull and full of very un-unique people.

Hello Phoenix - to answer your statement and clear up the issue I am female and submissive to Darcy - hence our joint profile, images and my sig, and as a non gorean female s-type even when I was unowned, I had and never have encountered derision on the gorean forum here, or goreans in real life.

I have been on the gorean forum and it is like any other place you may visit when you are an 'out of towner'.  You respect the protocols and if you make a mistake, understand that some things just aren't acceptable and take the flak.  There are some incredibly knowledgable people 'over there' who I have nothing but respect for, because they uphold their ideals and don't waver to please the masses.
If you went abroad and didn't learn the language and customs - would you expect the locals to just pander to you?  People have to use a modicum of common sense in situation they place themselves in.

So far, when I see people asking questions about Gor, it's done with slanted and biased language. The behavior of the Goreans who have answered on this thread has been respectful. I won't judge them all by some sour apples.

Thanks for stepping up and explaining I am female Aqua[;)] - one thing I have found, not one gorean has ever mistaken Darcy and me as being one in the same, I think they tend to read profiles more than people do here.  That's just a general observation.

I agree with you - even as a non gorean I see biased questions chucked in over there.  It's not different to biased questions chucked in here.  My observation is that BDSMers are no different to Goreans in temperament, it's just 'easier' and the done thing to point and single Goreans out.  It happens here, it happens over there - I don't see the biggie.

I find it interesting that people post about goreans being 'unfriendly' etc - but if people come in here and say, why aren't people friendly or understanding of new posters/BDSMers etc - the majority say that it isn't their responsibility to make new people welcome or pander to them, just to answer the questions - suck it up.  That is basically what happens over in Gorean forum so whats so different?
If people are that easily scared of, they aren't worth the effort or time anyway and they just go off to a 'community' or section that they do fit in.  I've seen plenty of times when you could have been 'run' off this forum and you haven't gone just because there are people who haven't taken the time to work out you have gorean expeience or that english isn't your first language.  Personally I think it says much for the person who holds to their convictions and isn't that easily scared off, quite frankly.

i do think that thsi point is very well made, there is no differance, I however think both are wrong. Sometimes it makes me so frustrated that people settle for the lowest common denominatior. No its no ones job to hold anyones hand, at the same time its no ones job to attack these posters, when people start posting and have the ice cream cone and moan people roll their eyes and say it doesnt matter, well it does, look at the responses to an ice cream cone compared to one with a paddle.

At the end of the day everyone starts somewhere, and all of it in my mind is about keeping this an exclusive group, oh you can only join if you can tell me what this is or that. Well back in the day there was a time none of us knew. I guess I am less jaded because I am still rather new, but it does make me sad. We get annoyed by prejudice and people who dont get it, and yet we dont like to explain it either.

You name the gender and dynamic and I could (but won't) toss a name or two out that I think is a perfect example of a putz. On the flip side, of each of those types, I could also name quite a few that I think are pretty cool human beings.

I don't know whether we are going backwards, but we have come to a halt as far as progress is concerned. Otherwise, why do so many young women feel they have to apologise for feminism? Meanwhile the glass ceiling is as opaque as it was two decades ago. Only, more deviously so, since we are now told that we have won the fight for equality. Stagnation... the moving sands of the forces of reaction.

Yeah, right [8|] . That's why when I look at the Senate or at Congress, all I see is dark suits - very few powdery pink dresses over there, have you noticed?

Norman created his fantasy world in part as a form of escapism from the harsh realities of 1960s feminist harridanes. Maybe it was hard for him to be a man in those terrible days of societal revolution? In any event, he obviously had prolific fun writing his novels, but I don't think they're anything more than quirky pieces of male sexual escapism.

Trust me, from what I've seen when lurking over there it is a mistake to ask a question.

Actually, I posted there for months without any problems.

Some do indeed get defensive, but if you read some of the threads on Goreans, and some of the troll posts that have been made on the Gorean lifestyles boards over time (it got annoying enough that Naja wrote about it, a post that's sometimes referenced and linked to), that's not really so surprising. Which, of course, reinforces negative perceptions on this end. Never mind where the cycle originated, but it really is time for it to end.

There is definitely a difference in reception based on how a question is asked, though.

Health,
al-Aswad.

About as much as Christians, Goths, communists, etc., like being compared to BDSM, I guess...

You think BDSM is all there is to any of those lifestyles and ideologies? [;)]

This particular Gorean happens to enjoy BDSM and about a billion different kinks... along with MArts, movies, computers, music, etc... not all Goreans do, and kind of get their hackles up when somebody suggests that their culture, morality, ideology, politics and worldview can be summed up as being BDSM, rather than recognizing that BDSM is a term for activities, while Gorean is a term for a whole bunch of stuff, including a set of morals, a certain worldview, a way to live, etc.

Slaves have nothing to do with it, beyond the fact that they're nice to have.

Shall we compare the Romans and the Greeks to BDSM as well?

They did the whole slave thing, after all.

Would anyone care to enlighten me?

How about comparing the Thorvaldslanders to my ancestors, the Vikings?

Or comparing the city of Ar with the capital of the Roman empire?
Or the tale of Procrustes with the Greek tale of the same?
There are Mongols, Native Americans, etc. in there.
Just have a quick look; don't trust marketing.

The truth is indeed out there, right? [;)]

Health,

colouredin -> RE: free woman????????????? (3/21/2008 6:19:35 AM)

I would suggest that it depends on your definition of BDSM

but as Gorean is a belief structure or philosophy then its slightly differant, and possibly explains the seriousness in which they take it and also how some view people who identify with BDSM as 'less' than they are.

However BDSM isnt in my mind simply a term for activities. The only differance is I dont believe in generalisations simply how it works for me, and in that way my being submissive links directly to my world view and how I live my life, very much the way that the Gorean ideology affects Goreans.

I find "trol" is often used for people not agreeing with the mean group in forums.
It is an easy way to not discuss about things you don't agree with.
