It has indeed been an interesting and entertaining read thus far. I would like to add to this bubbling cauldron several comments made from experience: - There are three areas of the "Gorrean Experience"
- The Gor Books
- The Gorean Role Play Arena
- The Gorean Lifestyle
- At times, there are large areas of difference between any of those three. Some who read the books do so because they actually enjoy them which is good. However, there Gorean Role P:layers who have never read the books and usually work on one or more web sites who give one person's ideas about Gor. Not a good idea for as it has been stated many time on the Gor forum that you need to read thre books as you get then and again several times in sequence to begine to understand the mindsets. (It should be understood that the Philosophy espoused by Norman in the Gor books and oft quotged come from the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the foundations of Christianity and traditional morality). Gor espouses much of what made various civilizations or peoples great in history. Common factors include Courage, Singleness of purpose, Strength of character, Honour, Honesty, Loyalty and so on.. Where the Gorean Role Player and the Gorean Lifestyler oft differ and clash is in the question of reality. In roleplay kajiri all appear to be young women, lithe, experts in exotic dance, etc. In realty I have met only a handfull who meet that crierior. Role Play is fun and one way for a short tiume to become emersed in the world of Gor, fight bloody and corageous battles, ride the legendary tarn or trek a kaiila accross the vast sandy deserts of the Tahari. Not so different to the SCA other than Gorean Rple Play tends to remain on line. The Gorean Lifestyler however, understands reality very well indeed. he knows he lives on Planet Earth, tarns and kaiila do not exist. It will land him in jail for years should he attempt a collaring raid at the local shopping mall. he understands full well that he must live within the bounds of the society his home resides. What he does do is to take the Gorean beliefs and principles as his own and leads a life ruled by the strict codes. I agree that others who are not Gorean live by similar codes too. many M/s relationships could well be Gorean except for protocol and terminology. Other lifestyles have similar ways of living, the Old Guard and my own Victorian Lifestyle are very similar.
- On the Gor Board, there are the same variety of people as inhabit this side or the forum. One or two seem to act as the self proclaimed "God of Gor" and have no truck with any who either have not proven their Goreanness to them personally, face to face. There are others who are more laid back and open to discussions rather than lectiuring. If there is a fault in some of the Gorean Lifrestylers it is an inability to laugh at themselves and a tendency to tersness boarding on rudeness when talking to people. Other gorean Lifestylers understand and are used to it but it canm be somewhat disconcerting to non Gorean folk.
To respond to the OP, a Free Woman of Gor is a woman who is not collared. This applies to any uncollared slave. This is supported by the books for an uncollared slave would be seen as a runaway and either collared or killed on site. For those who remember me, they will know I spent nearly ten years as a Gorean Lifestyle Master and several years Rolplaying on line in Gor as well. Gorean Lifestyles like my own, are not based on BDSM. There is bondage and disclipline if you own a slave. However it is not depoendent on owning slaves. Slaves are the perks of being a Gorean Free as it is with the Victorian Lifestyle.
