Hello, my name is, irrelevant. I have come here today, to talk to those of you who may not know of people like me.

I thought it might be useful for those who don’t know, or pay attention to my kind, because the way things are going, it won’t be long before many of you, or your loved ones, will be forced to be another me.

What am I? I am one of the living to exist, crew. I work my ass off, to get absolutely nowhere. I’m just a little above the bottom, in that I have a full time job, but I don’t make enough money to pay all of the bills by myself. And while the checks for $14+ a wk (for 2 kids) from the ex, are much appreciated, they don’t quite put me over the top; if ya know what I mean.

To put it in a better perspective, my income taxes were some ridiculously low amount, around $20-$40, and I got a return for a little over $7000.

Don’t get too excited, it all went to bills and car payments, so the kids and I can have a place to live, and I can have a vehicle to go to work, to do it all over again for another year.

I’m not complaining, I know when it became my fault, and where I should have done better. I have hopes that in a few years, when I will be able to put more focus on me again; I will be able to increase my abilities toward being productive; at least enough to give my kids a hand up.

My concern is; it won’t matter.

At one point I blamed much of my situation on my parents; after I stopped blaming myself for “making” them act the way they did. I realize now, their behavior was just a by product of the times. Everything else, just stuff that happens when we don’t pay attention.

I used to blame the public school I attended, for not being able to teach me. That is, after I stopped believing their assumptions, that there is something wrong with my ability to learn. Now I realize, they are only a by product of the rules and restrictions placed on them.

The rest of my immediate family is doing pretty well, according to society’s standards. They actually have to pay taxes. Thing is, I don’t really see how they are better off. Sure, they get to go places, buy things, and what not, but their race really isn’t any different then mine, with the exception of them having to run faster; and when its over, we’ll all end up in the same place.

The reason I wrote this, is because I’ve been sitting here wondering who I should vote for; if I should vote; and if not, then what; because I can’t ignore the fact that something needs to be done.

I just can’t see the point of trying to decide which kind of manure is best, when, on our present course, all we will be planting, is gardens of stone.

You should vote. If you don't vote then you have no right to complain about what happens

You are assuming that voting matters, that our options are not hand picked for us. I am rather doubtful this is true. Furthermore, they all have one purpose, and people like me, and even many levels above me, do not count for more then tokens in a tiddley winks game, to that purpose.

Too bad you can't actually prove that the ballots supposedly cast determine the results of the election in any way whatsoever.

That they are so pre-determined, that the campaign itself is just another opiate-for-the-masses consumption.

my grandfather used to say that if i didn't vote i didn't have a right to complain.  his brother died in ww2 and he felt pretty strongly about the sacrifice his brother made, that he'd died to help preserve that right for me.  so i dutifully go to my polling place, thank my great uncle and all the others who have served and vote for one who i pray will do the least damage to the country and the world at large.  it may not mean anything to anyone but me, but it's something i feel i have to do.

I'm amazed that after reading Keira's post, you managed to come up with such a reply. It's puzzling.

PanthersMom,

I am not against voting, I think that everyone should be involved. That the literature for such matters should be written in the simplest of terms, so that anyone capable of understanding third grade language skills, can comprehend what is going on.

I guess my point is; how does one pick, when no options are offered toward the goal?

Then again, if we keep looking for a leader, I guess that is all we will get.

We all need to go watch Protocol with Goldie Hawn.  That little speech at the end may be only a movie but its right on target.  If we don't know, we don't care, we don't vote then we get what we deserve.

It is up to us to be leaders to insist that those we elect pay attention to us.  If they don't then vote them out.  Too many people vote for the name they recognize and not because they know what that person has been doing.  The American public needs to start being the squeaky wheel who gets greased.  I write my elected officials on a fairly steady basis.

Point me to the one who only wishes to be a representative of the people, and not one who wishes to make our choices for us.

The one who realizes they are just one vote amongst many.

One who is not tied directly to the wealthy.

Who will treat me and every other individual, for the individuals that we are; instead of wishing to take my liberties away, because some guy across the country is not being responsible for theirs.

The one who will actually work toward our country’s motto.

i would agree with sharainks - to make even a semi-informed decision one needs to know positions that are important to one eg. abortion,  what is the position of each candidate on abortion, and if they get elected make sure they know that they won that vote because of their position.

i am still not convinced that any one politician can make a big difference- once all his decisions have filtered down through the ranks of the burrocracy

My father once said (as we were discussing how nice it would be Jed Bartlett were an actualy candidate):
Those would do best in the White House are the ones who tend to stay at local levels where they can actually do good things... those who seek the white house seek power.

thank you for this, keira.

it reminds me of something - i'm often gutted for wanting socialized health care, something i think is indicative of a wider distaste for those of us who want the government to take care of us. and i'm not just talking social welfare or "government handouts" - but in general. i want to caste a ballot for a candidate who cares about me, people i care about, issues i think about, my needs as someone who is disabled, putting herself through college, and relatively poor. i don't think it's unreasonable to be dissatisfied that my only options are people who care more about getting handouts from the wealthy than about my vote; if you want my vote, you should have to earn it. you should have to give a damn about me and other people in this country like me.

To bad a president of the people, for the people, by the people, parished long ago.

Unfortunately it meant something then, now it doesn't.

Now it seems like a game we play every 4 years.

Life is a one way ticket to a singular destination.

If you aren't enjoying what little time you're given, my only opinion is that you've wasted your time.

Kahlil Gibran said it pretty well. "If you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work. "

As for voting, when there is a candidate worthy of my support, I will vote. Likely, I will be dead long before this happens.

"Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. " ~ Thomas Jeferson
