Cross West Virginia off the list of possible swing states if Obama is the Dem nominee, the state will stay red. The state which has two Democrat senators and a Democrat governor, was a Bush state that the Democrats were targetting for November.

But in a shocking exit poll in the primary, more than 20% of white, middle and lower class Democrat voters in West Virginia admitted to pollsters that they will never vote for Barak Obama....not because of any one issue....but because he is black.

Obama is going to have a lot of trouble in November in rural areas of the country.

Lets hope the other 80% arent so racist. A persons colour or gender has nothing to do with their ability.

bipolarber -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/13/2008 4:46:26 PM)

Yeah, but were those 20% actually republicans participating in Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos?" THAT I can believe...

Keep in mind though that this is a state that has kept electing a former Klansman for the past 50 years... Senator Robert Byrd was a member of the KKK in his youth. And carried a pretty high rank in that group being a leader of one of the KKK's chapters. Yeah, i know he says today it was a big mistake and was a victim of his youthful ignorance. But still he's the only active member of Congress that has ever been directly a part of the KKK.

lronitulstahp -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/13/2008 5:19:07 PM)

umm... You must've missed the KKK thread here...apparently it's de rigeur to proclaim your KKK ties...i'm so jealous...pretty sure at least one of my ancestors was lynched by them.  i SOOOO want to be in the "in" crowd.

No one expected Obama to do well in WV for obvious reasons. WestByGodVirginny is a beautiful state but, keep in mind that it is 97% white and has the fewest number of college graduates of any state. It is also a place where some folks in the hills and hollows decide whether to send their kids to school by measuring the distance between their eyes with the side of a Skoal can. They sure, bygod ,can play the banjo, though. Da-de-da-da-de-da-dum-de-dum...

Honestly, I am surprised that the number is that low. I bet it is actually far higher than that and most wont say it... To me personally the race thing isnt an issue - in fact I would like to see mcCain take Conde Rice as his running mate to counter the black and woman factors on the democratic ticket. But all kidding aside here in Texas I hear "the N word" 100 times a week - and not from oilfield roughnecks or trailer park residents either... There are still "sunset towns" all over the south - I know three of them within 1/2 hour of Houston. So honestly as far as the race issue goes I do think Obama is going to have a tough time in the south and in rural areas all over the country. IMHO no way is he electable, and I thank God the dems didnt go with Hillary cause she would have had a chance against McCain.

what...they're letting Neggers vote????(in my best Dave Chappelle)LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCbD9o948ec
Actually...if black people vote for him simply because he's black and don't base that decision on his stance on the issues(though to be fair most blacks would've voted Dem if Hilary was the candidate) shame on them for wasting the right for which, so many died and suffered.

kittinSol -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/13/2008 6:19:20 PM)

The whole idea that black voters shouldn't vote for Obama on the basis of his skin shade rests on the notion that the voters in question have to be somehow more 'deserving' than their white counterpart. It's as if the white whiners expect the black electorate to show a higher level of ethics when they vote, which is, of course, absurd.

Edited because.

They aren't, Politesub.  I'm a native West Virginian and I know for a fact that they aren't.  There are ignoranct racists there as there are in the other 49 states here in the US (see post #8 above).  Some of the other states residents do a much better job of sublimating it and disguising it, I'd wager.  WV is no more racist than any other state.  Don't believe the hype[;)]...............luci

Too bad more West Virginians aren't college grads.  Then they could be as witty, intelligent and open-minded as you are[8|].  What you said above is nothing other than racism, pure and simple.  Ignorant, uneducated white WV'ans "measure the distance between their eyes" blah, blah, blah.  That's an asanine, ignorant racist statement if there EVER was one.  Where are all the open-minded, wouldn't-think-a-racist thought liberal hipsters decrying this?  [:o]  Same place they always are.  Sitting on their hands laughing, thinking up more ways to cleverly make racist comments against poor whites.  Disgusting.  People will cry and whine all day about people admitting they won't vote for Obama simply because he's black.  That is indeed sad and pathetic, I agree.  However, someone turns around and makes a post like this poking fun at them (and every other white WV'ian living in the hills and hollows) and what he said is even worse and not a peep.  Shameful indeed.........luci (a native West Virginian with 2 college degrees, getting ready to pursue a Master's degree who did indeed vote for Obama)

Hey luci, I'm a native West Virginian too and a fellow Arkansan.  I think a lot of people don't know anything about West Virginia.  It's always called a southern state, but it's really not.  It's a border state.  It is one of the few states in the country that has kept a ban on the death penalty.  It is the only state considered part of the south that didn't have segregation written into law during the Jim Crowe era.  It's one of the few states considered part of the South that is a heavy union state.  The largest civil uprising since the Civil War occurred there during the 1920's as a result of a union strike.  It's really not a conservative state or a liberal state.  It's a populist state.  The reason so many people there don't have college educations, is because the ones that graduate from college leave.  Most of my family has left there.

I don't see it as any more bigots there than I do anywhere else in the U.S.
