Status: offline 		In a way, I am being currently blackmailed.  It's involved, of course... but it involves custody, and an ex-slave that has become a victim.  Toe the line she draws or lose the kids.

there's a probability that i'll be leaving this site because of blackmail potential.  nope, not because of my own name, but  because of TheEngineer's.  this isnt my "normal" screen name, but yeah, that is my photo.  i might go to no photo and a new sign-in.  i havent decided yet.

Status: offline 		Hate to be the one to resurrect an old thread...the scenario was set and asked and a number of great answers supplied....but, yes but, it doesnt seem to take account of the day to day mechanisms of coping woth it when it happens.

What does one do, how does one do it, when in the middle of it? Who does one turn to knowing that every day they could walk into their office and find it empty or worse surrounded? Police? Lawyers? Get the best you can but seriously the internet is a whole other crime game that the authorities havent got their head around yet. A restraining order....yep it might stop him beating me up, but wont stop him setting up fake profiles in my name with personal photos and details that will destry my public position. Three hours with the cops this afternoon and all i got was a sorry. They cant stop him, and cant charge him without direct "proof". For an IT genius its pretty easy to hide ones ip address, to be anonymous.

It's 1.30am in my town. I cant sleep. sick with worry about what he did today, and sicker about what i cant stop him doing tomorrow.

Moral of the story: Be careful who you love, very careful.

Status: offline 		I've never run into anyone trying to or threatening blackmail. But have had run in's with many many people posting absolutely beautiful photo's of themselves.. Taken from what seems to be directly out of magazines. With oh poor me routine.. "I'm from Florida & find myself stuck in Nigeria I just want to come home. Can you help me with the airfare???"  There are alot of extorters & fakes .. beware.

Not me personally, though i've been the victim of other 'net torts and crimes. 
 
A friend of mine here was.  She used her work pc to come on the site and a coworker with an axe to grind used the 'History' function to find her profile here.
 
All hell broke loose.  i sent her to a local employment lawyer -- she was in another state -- and i lost touch with her after that, so i don't know what the result was.
 
Before disseminating a copy of her profile, the coworker asked her to resign -- she didn't like her and wanted her gone.  When she refused, the coworker emailed copies of her profile to all of upper management.
 
Blackmail is both a tort and a crime.  A/anyone who experiences this type of abuse should see an attorney for a full explanation of T/their rights and remedies.  Most personal injury lawyers would be competent to handle the initial consult, and charge nothing for it.
 
And to A/ayone who uses the 'net to stalk, harrass or blackmail A/anyone else -- <insert curse of Y/yr choice here>.

Status: offline 		If someone is coming to this site from their work computer and is surprised that s/he gets in big time trouble, that person needs to do some reality-checking.  Most companies have it in a handbook or policy manual that the sites visited from the company computers are monitored, and any "non-work" related visits to sites may result in termination.  Several people at my office lost their jobs for visiting inappropriate sites at work.  I felt no sympathy.  You do something without thinking of the consequences, doesn't make the consequences go away.  I also used to work for attys who did this type of law, and we wouldn't take the person's money because they were in the wrong and it wouldn't hold up in a court of law.

eta:  personal injury lawyers are not the same as employees rights lawyers.  With all due respect, it would be like going to an eye doctor for a pap smear.

Status: offline 		someone blackmailed (after a first date where we sat and ate lunch, i paid for my portion) if i don't call him back, he'd call the police and say I was a prostitute.  Like oh my fucking god, what a retard.  he even called from a police station (claimed) left a message and said he was filing a report against me to that effect.  He still floods my cell with text messages (like 27 at a time) and calls my phone at 4am from time to time.  I suppose he was trying to get under my skin?... I just laugh at him

Status: offline 		I'm also unblackmailable.  I've got no shame.    I try to be discreet, but most times I just prefer to be honest with peeps.  I place honesty higher than discretion.   If you ask me something, fear the truth.    On the other hand, I don't really want to show naked pics of myself, and if someone tried to blackmail me I'd be like cool, I could use the advertising to get laid more.  lol  It makes people really focus on other things when the intended reaction isn't gotten.

Going to the police is one way, and is effective only if the donut eating cops are effective.  I recently read where they put away peeps who don't even belong in jail.  Do you really want to put someone away for blackmailing when it was meant as a joke and you were too clueless to realize it was all in play?  ;0

Blackmail is not a joke. The blackmailer that is too clueless to realize that when they do something illegal they can't get out of it by saying, "but I was only joking," probably does belong locked up somewhere.

I think in such a situation, you have to say, yanno what? Give it your best shot. Tell anyone anything you want. Let them judge me on my own merit.
I *do* understand very well your need for discretion, as HoneyMaster has the same issues; but, if someone were to attempt to attempt to blackmail Him, I'd advise Him to bluntly tell that person to take their best shot.
This person *thinks* that he is in control. Take your control back now; and do it decisively.
Tell him you're done hiding, and that *if* he does say anything negative about you, he better be prepared to prove it, or be prosecuted for slander. (not to mention blackmail.) Tell him you are prepared to go to the FBI today, lest he cease and desist immediately.
F**k 'em.

Status: offline 		I met a so-called Dom off this site once.  There was no connection for me and I was considering working under another Dom.  I kindly told this guy I was not interested and he threatened to out me.  Told me he had all my personal info. as he was an investigator and he was going to contact my husband and have a chat with him about me and my activities.  I am  new to the scene, only 9 months, and was in the middle of a divorce.  My husband finding out could have posed big problems for me.  Since then I have changed my screen  name and said wannabe Dom contacted me, not knowing who I was.  I shudder to think how many women have been harrasses by this a**hole simply because they weren't interested.  I basically told this idiot to fuck himself and he backed off.  Loser!  And yes, he's still on this site!

Status: offline 		I agree, I think the company's decision to fire is justified legally and it wouldn't be likely that the person could sue and win damages from the termination of employment.

But wouldn't the fired person be able to bring the co-worker up on some kind of civil charge?  There must be something it would fall under that might fly for a viable lawsuit.  Harassment?  Invasion of privacy?  I don't know.
