DALLAS — A homeless man who spit in the mouth and eye of a police officer and then taunted him, saying he was H.I.V. positive, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Wednesday for harassing a public servant with a deadly weapon: his saliva.

Because of the deadly weapon finding, the man, Willie Campbell, 42, of Dallas, will not be eligible for parole until he has served half his sentence.

In May 2006, a passer-by reported an unconscious man, Mr. Campbell, sprawled outside a downtown Dallas building. Mr. Campbell tried to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication, prosecutors said.

While the law unquestionably is an ass on this one, I can't help but wonder if Mr Campbell achieved his goal.  It goes on to say in the article that he waived his right to appeal.

It's a helluva solution, but one thing is certain:  Mr. Campbell is no longer homeless.

I hope you never fall on bad times DomAviator no one is immune to the risk of poverty all that has to happen is a recession and there will be a lot more homeless people. Oh look what is looming around the corner.

How Dickensian, plenty of poor children like Oliver floating about maybe we should lock them up too?

Remind me which direction is the future and which is that past again?

Some chance at rehabilitation would be nice

And rehabiltation would work this time, after 25-ish previous incidents, because...???

because he had been convicted of attacking two other officers in a similar manner and biting two inmates, as well as more than two dozen other offenses.

Mr. Henrichs added that his client had been indicted under a habitual-offender statute that increased the penalty in his case to a minimum of 25 years in prison, because he had been convicted of attacking two other officers in a similar manner and biting two inmates, as well as more than two dozen other offenses.

Glad you pointed this out.  I am re-pointing it out by reddening what you underlined, as the nature of posts to this thread has me wondering if people missed this point.

A good indication that the method you are currently applying will be fruitless, someone needs to give him some hope and a reason to change.

In the best of all possible worlds, people like  him would get help, and get fixed, but that doesn't always work. That leaves the person in question, possibly being a hazard to others, not just officers. A compassionate society looks at their needs, as well as his.

Tough situation. [8|]

If the police are so fragile they should really be doing something else maybe. He is a definitely a threat to authority figures but to class him as a threat to the general public, I don't know about that, maybe.

Skip putting him in prison if you feel like that, as my dad would say and I never listen to him 'Take him out the back and shoot him.'

When society has no compassion it shouldn't still be called society.

Ill vote for the shoot him thing. I hate driving in areas of houston that have the homeless  dregs washing windshields and begging at the lights etc. I hate when they dare touch my vehicles. I dont want their filthy dirty grubby disease ridden hands anywhere on my $55,000 car. I literally go through a car wash immediately after one of those walking pus bags washes my window with his filthy rag before I can drive through the interesection. Good to know this one is gone for 35 years, hes not "homeless" anymore is he? [:D]

IMO perhaps you would do well to remember the saying "there, but for the grace of God, go I". Anyone can end up on the streets, even you, given the right set of circumstances. I'm sure that those walking pus bags as you call them didn't decide it would be fun to lose everything they own and live on the streets, a little compassion would be nice.

I don't know about other cities but here in Montreal, mental patients have been released from hospital far too soon with no planned followup. They then end up on the streets having fallen through the cracks.

There is NO excuse to be homeless - EVER. It has nothing to do with poverty... It is about addiction and laziness. Dont want to be homeless? Join the military... Sign on as a deckhand on a fishing boat or merchant vessel. Move to someplace like Shell Rock Iowa and rent a trailer for $200 a month even if you need three roomates. (Thats $50 per person a month!) Get a fucking JOB! Go do odd jobs. Buy a lawnmower at a pawnshop for $30 and go door to door offering to mow lawns... As I stated in another thread, the illegal alien who picks up the dogshit in my yard for $5 a week is probably pulling in $45K a year NET when you run the math... ($5 for 5 minutes work at my house ($5 per dog , $2 per addl dog - I only have one.), spends about 1/2 hour on my block then goes to service his accounts on the next block... ) Hes not homeless!

These homeless people arent the victims people think they are... I have a six figure income and lead a  very comfortable lifestyle but even with my career, my side business, and income from various investments - and despite having a bachelors degree two masters (and an AAS I got for shits and giggles) -  I wouldn't be able to support a $1000 a day heroin or crack habit... To do that, and not be homeless, requires a $365K annual disposable income! Thats their choice not mine. I say put the crack pipe down and get a house, or slink off somewhere and die.

I do not propose it as a solution for homelessness in general.  I do wonder if perhaps Mr. Campbell chose it as his solution for his homelessness.....

Of course real afflictions such as mental illness (Bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia) never contribute to homelessness.

never met any mentally ill folks huh?  if it was as simple as you say, there wouldnt be any homeless people.  some are lazy as hell i am sure, but the majority fight demons you and i could never even imagine on a daily basis.

Level -> RE: HIV positive man gets 35 year sentence for spitting on officer (5/18/2008 1:01:40 PM)

A lot of homelessness is due to lack of desire, and/or addiction, but a considerable amount is due to mental illness, as well. And I know for a fact that here in Texas, programs to help the mentally ill are underfunded. We've had three facilities close here in the last year and a half or so.

DA, not all homeless people are addicts...and not everyone who doesn't own their own home is an addict.  i dont' own my own home, i'm not an addict, but should i slink off and die because i dont' own a home at the moment? maybe you're the one who needs to put the crack pipe down dude.

talk to a homeless vet with PTSD if you have doubts that what SeeksOnlyOne says is true

You don't see how a man that has previous convictions for biting and spitting has some psych problems? Okay [8|] .

And thirty five years for biting is bordering on insane, but hey... that's okay too.

Agreed.  Extreme views, largly based on ignorance and personal prejudice are coming out on both sides of this one.

My very strong opposition to forcing treatment on the mentally ill (outside of a probation/parole/public safety issue) isn't just hypothetical.  There are worse alternatives than wandering the street.

Christine - Im sure this is just a "blonde moment" but homeless doesnt mean you dont OWN a home, it means you dont have a place to live and dwell on the streets - ie "a bum"... Tenants are not "homeless" which is what one of the solutions I suggested was "rent a trailer for $200 a month even with 3 roomates". None of the alternatives I suggested involved them BUYING a home - but all would take them off the streets and no longer homeless.
