yes kittin, there are a lot of people like me who hold down full time jobs, pay for health insurance and just scrape by every month.  if something happened and i got more than one paycheck behind and couldn't make the money up, i could be living in my car for a while. it's not just crack addicts and mentally disabled people who fall upon hard times, sometimes it's hard working people too.

Sorry, but I have to disagree.

Yes, there is people like this out there and yes, it does happen.

But as someone who spent most of his life in the city of Memphis which has a huge homeless problem, a rough snowball survey of my personal experiences concludes that these are a small percentage of people classified as "homeless".

Maybe it's different in other cities. I don't know, but the vast majority in Memphis are crack addicts.

I think it is a tragedy when something like you said above happens. As one of the members of the lower class, it could possibly happen to me. However, I highly doubt it, because I have and am sacrificing a lot to get ahead and I can think of at least 10 different scenarios that would put me under some kind of roof within a few days in the face of such a contigency.

I also think it's sad when the mentally ill have no place to go besides the streets.

But the majority of the "bums" out there right....don't feel sorry them in the least. It's not societies "failure" or societies "responsibility" It's a personal failure and a personal responsibility.

There is currently such a strong need for cheap, work labor that we have huge numbers of illegial Mexicans migrating into our country to do it for us.

People will argue this issue until the end of time of "What to do with the homeless?", but unfortanely, the homeless are an inevitable part of a free market and capitalism.

i was simply stating that there are a number of reasons why someone might become homeless, and i'm not saying it is a permanent thing.  yes some people have themselves to blame for their homeless situations, but  a fire or natural disaster could make someone homeless in seconds whether they are addicts or what have you.

if i were without a home for a week, that would be  a hard and scary thing, at least i would think so and i'd do my damndest to get out of that situation.  pretty much i'm saying shit happens across the board whether you're insane or an addict or millionaire.

I'd love to join you but if it's okay i'd rather not take a turn at driving the boat.  My lousy sense of direction is legendary around here.

Let's be pragmatic and use the dollar language: how much will this sentence cost the state?

Let's be really pragmatic and figure he'll die of AIDS long before completing the sentence, and that whatever treatment he has been receiving for HIV was already on the taxpayer tab.

Trust me, Kitten, when it comes to the cold-blooded approach, they have to take my temperature on the Kelvin scale.

kittinSol -> RE: HIV positive man gets 35 year sentence for spitting on officer (5/18/2008 5:14:44 PM)

It'll be a double-whammy, won't it: medical care and prison. Lots of money for not much return: oh well, if it amuses you to spend your cash on imprisonning people like him whilst letting the real criminals run amock... Whatever rocks your boat.

TheHeretic -> RE: HIV positive man gets 35 year sentence for spitting on officer (5/18/2008 5:25:29 PM)

Now you're forgeting my position on the death penalty, Kitten.  There would be plenty of room in the jails if I had my way.  [:D]

I have heard that HIV can be transmitted through saliva, but that's more of a theoretical.  HIV can exist in small quantities there, but that it would take like 20 gallons of exposure to trasmit it.  That would be like a small bath tub of saliva. (ew lol).  On top of that, our own saliva has characteristics that protect us from microbes, making it even less likely to be transmitted via mouth-to-mouth.  The eye has some protection as well.

The virus can, however, be transferred via a bite.

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/factsheets/transmission.htm

I LOVE how up-to-date the CDC is on their theories. Check that copywrite of July 1999. Meidcal information almost ten years old there. More recent studies are finding that the need for active blood to active (or "live) bloob is required to transmit the virus.

"Well, Jen, how does that work for sex of any kind then?"

Answer:
Male-to-Male/Female Anal Sex: when a penis gets "hard" blood vessals "pop" and breaks along the uretha, introducing blood into semen. During anal sex there are soft tears and rips along the colon and sphincter. Blood at that point in time can be transmitted and give exposure.

Male-Females Vaginal Sex: Same as the anal...except another hole.

Mother-to-Child Breastfeeding: Often infants and newborns do not have the same anti-body and natural protections built in as adults. During breastfeeding there are trace amounts of blood in the milk that help provide those anti-bodies. In the case of a child becoming infected this way, a child is exposed and does not have the natural protections an adult would in their own saliva and are exposed in to the virus the same way they would be exposed to anti-bodies that are designed to help them survive childhood.

These reasons are why lesbians are not known for transmitting HIV. It's also the same reason that tears, sweat, urine, and saliva don't transmit the virus (no blood presence in the fluids normally) under normal circumstances. Blow jobs are generally considered "safer" than unprotected anal sex with an HIV+ partner. Does this mean go blow the next homeless guy out there cuz you can? No, it means be safe and protect yourself....and remember that bites MAY have the possibility to transmit in extreme circumstances.

Boi...who did HIV outreach and thinks the CDC is full of shit for publishing theory as fact and then not keeping up-to-date information.

FR:
since we have been discussing homelessness...

here is a scenario...you become disabled due to illness and can not work.
You do not have disability insurance through your employer.

Your physician has said s/he will support you in getting SSDI.
Assuming the case is compelling enough that they give it to you the first time without a need for appeal you are not eligible to receive benefits until you have been out of work for 5 months.

How many of us have 5 months worth of bill money tucked away these days?

How close to being homeless would being out of work for 5 months put you?

(hijack over)

Many hardworking people are living on the edge, it's sad, but it's true.

It's so easy to throw stones from the height of an ivory tower...

TheHeretic -> RE: HIV positive man gets 35 year sentence for spitting on officer (5/18/2008 6:16:27 PM)

To start with, state and county level welfare is going to pick you up a lot sooner than the feds.  Such a change of circumstance is going to be hard and traumatic.  The level of financial support will not be what you are accustomed to.  Your expectations are going to have to change.

Harsh as it seems, a traumatic, culture shock, drop into poverty might be the best way to transition into a much reduced lifestyle.  The charity seems a little better once you've tried to make do without anything.
