You can mix silk and cotton, cotton and ramie, etc. It's only linsey woolsey that's forbidden. This came up during Bar Mitzvah Torah study. As I recall even the rabbi hadn't a clue about it. His best guess, as I recall, was that since for ancient Hebrews, anyone could be high priest (under certain conditions) the entire people are considered priests, not laymen. And to show this, certain things were forbidden to demonstrate the devotion. In the same way that Catholic priests are forbidden to marry, simply to devote themselves wholly to God. And if I'm wrong, this was four years ago and I blame my age and declining memory!
