Thadius -> Obama ups the stakes... (7/31/2008 9:32:35 AM)

Well, the stakes of the game went up.  I wonder how long it will be before we see the first James Byrd type ad, or a repeat of the Missouri Dem ad of '98...

Anyways, here is the latest.  I expect some of you will just gloss over it and come back with a witty retort about McCain or Bush.

quote:

http://amerpundit.com/2008/07/30/obama-mccain-trying-to-scare-you-because-i-dont-look-like-the-other-presidents/
Apparently accusing McCain of simply running a negative campaign isn’t enough. Obama’s now accusing his opposition of attempting to make people scared of him because he doesn’t “look like the other presidents on the currency, he’s a got a funny name”. Oy.

“He’s spending an awful lot of time talking about me. You notice that?” Obama asked a crowd of just over one thousand seated in a university gym. “I haven’t seen an ad yet where he talks about what he’s going to do. And the reason is because those folks know they don’t have any good answers, they know they’ve had their turn over the last eight years and made a mess of things.”
“They know that you’re not real happy with them and so the only way they figure they’re going to win this election is if they make you scared of me,” Obama continued, repeating an attack from earlier in the day. “What they’re saying is ‘Well, we know we’re not very good but you can’t risk electing Obama. You know, he’s new, he doesn’t look like the other presidents on the currency, he’s a got a funny name.’”

Obama: Because McCain's picking on him.

So complaining about your opponents taking the low road ,is taking the low road......?

Considering he`s been a victim of this,so far from the right,he`s correct to bring it out in the open.

And considering the stakes are America`s future and survival,I think Mr McAngrypants should talk about the economy, federal deficits,un-ending un-productive war,Wall Street, financial liquidity, our credit/bond rating, high health care costs, getting riped off be Exxon, etc.

Not comparisons with Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.

Even republicans, aren`t happy with the ads.

Something tells me that McCain isn`t in control of his campaign.

These childish, low road, complain about nothing campaign tactics ,don`t seem to be in character for McCain.

I see a staff shuffle and few more firings/hirings at the McCain campaign, soon.

From link:

Seems that John McCain's (R) ridiculous, dishonorable and desperate attack ad launched this weekend against Barack Obama (D) is making even Republicans concerned about the direction and judgment of the McCain campaign.
From today's Washington Post:

One GOP strategist with close ties to McCain's campaign said the new line of attack reflected the operation's "schizophrenic" nature. He said that tendency was also on display last week, as McCain spoke at length about media coverage of Obama rather than sticking with his plan to focus on the economy.

"They couldn't help themselves," the strategist said, adding that the ad over the hospital visit is "churlish and unlike McCain, and hardly will resonate with the swing voters who are going to decide this election." The strategist continued: "They're doing it because the candidate, and the campaign, is not happy with where they are and they're lashing out."

If McCain hopes to win the election, the strategist added, "he needs to be a happy warrior."

Says Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) during yesterday's appearance on CBS' Face The Nation:

Sen. HAGEL: Well, let me begin by making this comment and answering your question. Both of these men are smart, capable, decent men who love their country. I think we as a nation are far better off for these two capable men. One will have to govern this country and bring the country together, as well as lead the world and bring the world together, and that's going to take a bipartisan consensus to govern. They're better off to focus on policy differences.

I think John is treading on some very thin ground here when he impugns motives and when we start to get into, `You're less patriotic than me. I'm more patriotic.' I admire, respect John McCain very much, I have a good relationship--to this day we do, we talk often. I talked to him right before I went to Iraq, matter of fact. John's better than that...

You already brought this up once....how 'witty' is it to keep harping on one candidate for playing politics to win, while glossing over the same behavior in his opponent?

Both of them want that Mikey Dukakis moment to scare the voters into voting against the evil darky/cracker on the other side.

If they can't find one, they will simply manufacture it, in between all the innuendo, spin and hype.

No matter how much syrup you pour on this it isn't going to turn into pancakes, so everyone may as well drop the pretense that their side is an innocent victim here.

FirmhandKY -> RE: Obama ups the stakes... (7/31/2008 10:39:13 AM)

You know, I read all of this stuff ...

I generally vote Republican, but McCain has little to recommend himself to me. He was my last choice out of the potential Republican candidates.

He's a politician.

Obama's a politician.

But ... I just get this feeling, the main difference between the two is that McCain is an "honest politician", while Obama isn't.

(And I mean "honest" as in the political sense, not the normal sense of the word).

I'd rather have someone that I think is pretty obvious as to who he is, than a cipher where I suspect a lot is hidden.

I'll hold my nose. I'll take antiacid pills (hell, maybe a fifth of Makers) before I go to the polls ... and vote McCain.

Funny thing.  Since he is my Hobson's choice, I really don't give a shit if you guys diss him. Feel free to insult and rant.

I'll probably agree with you. But I'll still vote against Obama. And have fun poking fun at His Majesty. [:D]

Firm,

Replace Republican with Dem, Maker's Mark with Tanqueray Sterling, and Fries with Obama, and we are in 100% agreement.

It sucks to do the lesser evil vote. [:-]

Alumbrado, I am genuinely curious. You seem to play devil's advocate in ohhhh 99.99999% of posts. I cannot figure out who you support, what side you are on, and what trips your trigger. Just my teeny little two cents. Feel free to snark or ignore, or answer if you wish.[&:]

Not comparisons with Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.

I thought that comparison was spot on, personally. You take a man who has done basically zip as a legislator at ANY level, has zip notable experience in governmant at ANY level, and let him portray himself as something between the Second Coming of JFK and MLK.

And there is NO analogy to be made to the non-talented Paris Hilton or the marginally talented Britney Spears? Hogwash.

Obama is the Paris Hilton of the Beltway set. A man who is famous only for being famous, not because of any merit or accomplishment of his own.

If Dems don't like it....oh well.

SilverMark -> RE: Obama ups the stakes... (7/31/2008 12:50:21 PM)

An amateurish attack at best!....To compare Senator Obama to Paris Hilton?...absolute desperation on McCain's part.
What a wonderful election we are in for!

Oh come on CL ,winning the nomination is all by itself an accomplishment, especially when one takes the view that the man has no experience at any level has you assert.Surely even you, with your seemingly irrational hate of all things Democratic, can concede this point while still maintaining your apparent obsession...come on give him this backhanded compliment at least...by your own definition he has hoodwinked alot of people

...so that would make McCain, what? Chesney Hawkes?

Oh, and i italicised one part of what you wrote.....now i can see how it's possible (just, gaining the nomination is something) to argue Obama has yet to achieve much, but you go further and suggest he is wholly without merit. On what basis do you assume this? Because he's a Democrat?
Right wingers in other threads have recently bemoaned the yah-boo-sucks school of political debate. Well, CL has now conclusively proved that it's not a Democrat only flaw.

So he's a worthy candidate because.....he's a candidate? The fact that his political resume is so thin as to be nonexistent is irrelevant?

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama ups the stakes... (7/31/2008 1:21:39 PM)

No CL I have long past given up convincing you that he is a worthy candidate, that ship has sailed.Your claim was "no merit or accomplishment of his own"...My reply ,and you have not addressed it is that winning his party's nomination in and of itself is an accomplishment and it would behoove you to acknowledge this, your denial of this basic fact is beneath you...he survived a lengthy primary season and is the presumptive candidate of a major political party ...That is an accomplishment and it is the order of things to concede this point.

......are you sure that your sig line isn't "Ignore, misinterpret, pretend to overcome"?

The phrase 'worthy candidate' is yours. What some of us have pointed out, and you have merely pretended not to notice, is that winning the nomination for the POTUS is an achievement in and of itself. No resume is necessary to applaud that one achievement.

bipolarber -> RE: Obama ups the stakes... (7/31/2008 1:43:15 PM)

McCain: because Obama is too popular with "the help."

Sanity -> RE: Obama ups the stakes... (7/31/2008 2:14:05 PM)

Ah, but would you say the same thing about Bush. That's the real test, there. Do you think that Bush is a great man with an outstanding achievement under his belt for having done the same, only difference being which political  party he won the nomination in.

Hmmm... I thought Bush was irrelevant, because he isn't running. Just quoting clord here.

That is the order of things
