Scrapple was created in America by Dutch settlers trying to recreate the German (Deutsch) dish out of locally available ingredients like buckwheat flour.

Wow.  So many people so annoyed.  I'm impressed SB.  Since great grandfather Reilly probably wasn't Irish according to your definition, I'll have to change the faire persona I created to honor previous generations of my family.  Lol.  I've done the research and can tell you what parts of Ireland and Wales my father's family came from.  And not a Catholic in the bunch.  

As for the Pen Dutch .... my grandmother was Pennsylvania Dutch.  She just always shortened it to Dutch.  When we started digging into our family history, we got a huge surprise.

Now, am I full Irish?  Nope.  I don't claim to be.  My CM name is derived from one of the personas I portray.  In reality, I am a full blood mutt.

Here's the thing. Does it really matter who invented that strange, grey/brown square of meat? Not really. There's a lot of german/PA dutch blood in me and around this area. So we all know what each other means when someone says "The cookies are all," no big deal.

And I think the idea of scrapple is pretty universal to any culture using every last bit of the animal, as it were.

ROFLMAO Oh you all made me smile! The name got 'Englished' for scrapple. I made snitz un knepp, hog maw and pot pie all recently. You wouldn't believe how often I say I'm Dutch and ppl assume, you know, Dutch not Penn Dutch. Ancestry is where my culture is rooted. That's why this thread strikes a nerve. It's the food, music, stories and histories that our ancestors were able to bring with them to the USA when they had to leave so much behind. They carried these things with them to a new world and handed them down to us today so yeah, it pisses people off to be told you can't be a 'real true' whatever because of <insert reason here>.

And some of them also brought myths, rumors, biases, flawed oral histories, re-invented biographies, and just pure BS, that is often taken as gospel by many today.[;)]

I've lost track of how many people have solemnly assured me that their great-great-great-whatever played Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and Fox On the Run, back on the 'auld sod', while not having a clue about De'il Amongst the Tailors, or Payday in the Army......

The Irish always were ready to kill one another.  It was said that the only way to get them to stop fighting each other was to give them someone else to fight.
As far as it goes, that is where a large number of my family began the journey to where we are now.  As such, I honor their struggles and their lives by taking pride in where they came from.
I am also studying the German part of my heritage since I discovered it.  Again, I feel a desire to know my family's journey to get here.  In the past, I have studied the Welsh and Cherokee parts of my family.  I will continue to do so and will take pride in those who came before me and enabled me to be here.  I think that is what the ethnic pride so many of us mutts have is all about.

I've yet to hear anyone that claims to be Irish, say it to garner pity from someone else. I for one, assume I'm Irish because my Grandma told me I was. *shrug* The O' surname was also a small giveaway.

I'm not reading all this inanity so I'm going to try and summarize the OP's claims. If your famly is Irish and southern you're not really Irish but Ulster especially if your family has been in the US more than 150 years. And even more true if they're not Catholic.

I've had my ancestry traced as far back as possible and my mothers family is Irish from multiple sources. My direct matrilineal ancestor, came to the colonies in the mid 1700's from Ireland. Another ancestor came to Baltimore in 1850 from Ireland, he later served in a maryland Union regiment and moved to appalachia after the war (he was baptized a Catholic in Ireland, I have a copy of the page from the parish records) but is buried in the Baptist churchyard with his wife and many of their descendants including my mother and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. All of whom were protestants. Both these men's surnames were of definite Irish extraction not Ulster scottish.

I will further point out that one of the Scots ancestors on my father's line, transported in the aftermath of Culloden, was a Highland Jacobite and more than likely catholics as well but no record of a catholic wedding or baptism can be found in that line and all the known descendants are protestants.

Perhaps the OP fails to realize that in 250+ years people might have changed churches.

Now maybe since my ancestors include several who were in the Carolinas before 1776 and include men who homesteaded land made available when the Cherokee were expelled from Northern Alabama in 1838 I'm somehow not of pure enough southern descent.

I'm not Irish. I'm not Catholic, though my Dad is (lapsed).

I'm not Scottish, though my Grandfather was, and my Dad was born there. I'm not Irish, though I can trace my family back two generations to Ireland.

I count myself as more Cornish than anything else http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornish_language as I've lived there for many years. and it explains my accent! B ut at the end of the day I am English, because I am. I can tentetively trace my family tree back to Roman times, as in BC, and confirmed further back than Henry VII.

However I dont really give a flying fuck what people choose to call themselves. If they are Irish cos their Great-Great-Grandaddy was from there so be it.

But saying you're not from somewhere based on religion is dumbassed.

I can't understand why anyone would claim to be Irish? These people almost got wiped off the face of the earth by a potato.  All I know is that if you ever see 4 people claiming to be Irish, you'll find a fifth.
