This thread is just silly. I wonder how far back one has to research their ancestry to find out if they qualify to affix the Irish label to themselves. Gosh, I've always thought I was Irish.... My family is Dark Irish. Now there is some controversy on exactly where that "dark" comes from. Many believe that it comes as a result of the Spanish Armada. Personally I believe that is unlikely because most of the survivors of the Spanish Armada were killed on the beaches. There was a handful who were put into service to some of the Irish chiefs...but the legacy they left behind would have to be rather small. A more likely explanation to me is that the Dark Irish descended from the Fir Bolg who were believed to be the aboriginal people of Ireland. Certainly over time that ancestry was diluted within Ireland which would explain how my sister and I ended up with dark red hair and green eyes while the rest of my immediate family has black hair and blue eyes. We were all "blessed" with that painfully pale and freckled skin. No one on my father's side of the family immigrated here until the early 1900's....my grandmother in 1915 and my grandfather in 1916. Both very devoutly Catholic. On my mother's side of the family there is more time between the Irish homeland and their first steps upon this soil. My grandfather's family was moved (likely kicking and screaming) to the island of Barbados in about 1650. My grandmother's family on her side ended up in Barbados around 1840. Their origins were also rooted in the Catholic faith but somewhere along the line someone converted (oh the horror!) My great grandmother and great grandfather came here to the United States as young lovers in about 1905.....pregnant and unwed, which was a shameful thing in that time. By that time they both referred to themselves as Barbadian. After so many years living in the islands they felt disconnected from their Irish roots.....not to mention that Irish wasn't exactly a thing to be shouting from the rooftops during that era. My mother and father bucked all tradition when they married. My father being devoutly Catholic....and my mother being, Oh gawds....one of those "black footed Protestants" as they called them in those days. My mother had to sign papers for the Church promising to raise any children that came from the marriage as Catholic and not "poison" us with those Protestant beliefs. So.....does that make me Half Catholic? Was my mother's family out of the homeland too long to still be considered Irish??? Wow....I can't believe that a thread on CollarMe has shaken my very foundation! Maybe I shouldn't even give it any further thought and just let go of my claim of Irish heritage since according to some of the responses....I probably shouldn't be proud to have any association with "those" people.

Of course, the OP didn't ask why people who could document their heritage claimed it, he asked why people had to enhance or revise their roots, in order to embrace being something they weren't... an interesting question, and one ignored by many in this thread.

Both sides of my grandparents are from Dublin. I guess that makes me Irish...but then, I don't have a history degree so perhaps with your superior intellect you could tell for sure.

Again, ignoring what the OP actually asked.... he didn't say anything about people from Dublin claiming to be Irish, he asked why people who weren't directly descended from Irish ancestors thought it neccessary to proclaim themselves something they weren't, instead of being more precise.

i suppose my claim to being Irish even though i was merely adopted into such a Clan makes me not a truthful and undying Irish Catholic. i remember when i was very young one of my cousin's said "i was not one of them b/c i did not have their blood." My Godfather, my Uncle who i am named after, came unhinged. He claimed i had the attitude and big mouth to be so included, and my blood meant nothing to Him nor the rest of "my people." Alas, i have let them down as i do not have a deep seeded need to be drunk on a daily basis, and yet they accept me as one of them! Life is such a quandry, as my Godfather used to say! b.~

I mean, what with all your smarts and you history degree, isn't there something more important you could be doing with your time? This is such a strange discussion. In our family there's a story about how our ancestor types met, and I won't bore with the details at the moment; but there was a "feud" or "war" and my Scot ancestor and Irish ancestor did the dirty, and here we are. Snerk

My granny came to New Zealand from Ireland when she was eight. That makes me a New Zealander. Not Irish. and actually , my dad did some research and it turns out that my family are descended from Picts. so does that make my ums Irish-Americans, or New Zealand- Americans or Pict-Americans - or just plain Americans. I plum for just plain American. I am proud of my childrens heritage, but that doesn't buy them a cup of coffee - even at MickeyD's. Its an interesting (mildly) concept to waste a little time on.
