quote:
And I don't understand how people born in the US , with parents born in the US, with grandparents born in the US, with great-grandparents born in the US, claim to be anything but fucking AMERICAN. If your family has been here since the 1700s, you are probably 15th or 16th generation American. Not Irish-American. Not African-American. Not German-American. Not Iranian-American. You are AMERICAN. Hello there Refuge, There are a lot of people in "America" as I was once informed by a Peruvian. Oh yes, he was American - South American. The sad thing is that in English we don't even have a word that means we are from the United States. In Spanish, the word is Estados Unidense. It means literally - a person from the United States. What do we have? An arrogant word - American - which suggests that we are the only important people from the Americas... The Bolivians, the Canadians, the Chileans, the Mexicans, the Estados Unidense, we are all Americans. When traveling to Canada, I was asking directions for how to get back to "America." "This IS America" the Canadian man told me. Well, you know what, he was right. If you're going to get your knickers in a knot, you might consider getting them in it for something a little less US-centric ... oh and accurate... well wishes, *tgfka sunshine
