Unless you are from a very strict family then you really can't pin yourself down on being from just one place and one heritage cos every family has someone in it that isn't of the same origin as someone else, especially nowadays so no-one can be that pure

I'm sorry, but that's just historical record.  If you're family is protestant, than you're not Irish in all liklihood.  I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

Right... because there are no protestants in Ireland. Happily I can trace my roots directly back on both sides of my father's line and know this is BS.

Pretty much on the nose...though, I am going to say right here and now...I was born and raised here in the states...my  grandparents were Catholic and my parents were Catholic...however...I, myself...made the choice to switch over to Southern Baptist as a child. My late partner was Italian...Catholic...which makes my kids all Catholic...but I still practice as a Southern Baptist

SilverMark -> RE: Fake Irish (2/20/2009 3:58:51 AM)

I thought that most of the people who settled in the Southern hills in particular were Scots Irish.....now, aks me what that is and I will have no idea but, I have read it and heard it enough times I was convinced.
I only claim to be Irish on March 17th or so when I attach that kiss me I'm Irish pin to my zipper.....Kiss me I am a WASP doesn't work quite so well!

Why do we feel the need to include ourselves amongst the Irish Catholics?

I can vouch for the fact that MANY MANY non Catholics have been and are still fierce critics of the Occupation.

Many have died for their views or have been jailed for many years without any proven justification other than conscience.

Theobald Wolfe Tone was not a Catholic.

Being a Catholic is not a measure of ones right to oppose British rule, propaganda from the British goes back a long way and is well worth studying before you argue this point.

For once slaveboy , I think we see eye to eye ?

And I don't understand how people born in the US , with parents born in the US, with grandparents born in the US, with great-grandparents born in the US, claim to be anything but fucking AMERICAN.  If your family has been here since the 1700s, you are probably 15th or 16th generation American.

Not Irish-American.  Not African-American. Not German-American.  Not Iranian-American.

You are AMERICAN.

Hello there Refuge,
There are a lot of people in "America" as I was once informed by a Peruvian.  Oh yes, he was American - South American.  The sad thing is that in English we don't even have a word that means we are from the United States.  In Spanish, the word is Estados Unidense.  It means literally - a person from the United States.  What do we have?  An arrogant word - American - which suggests that we are the only important people from the Americas... The Bolivians, the Canadians, the Chileans, the Mexicans, the Estados Unidense, we are all Americans.

When traveling to Canada, I was asking directions for how to get back to "America."  "This IS America" the Canadian man told me.  Well, you know what, he was right.

If you're going to get your knickers in a knot, you might consider getting them in it for something a little less US-centric ... oh  and accurate...

well wishes,

Your command of Irish Gaelic is impressive indeed. 'Nuff said on that.

You should take a closer look at the tattoo in one of my profile pics, I think we may have something more specific in common than I had realised during our earlier interactions

I can't understand why anyone would claim to be Irish? These people almost got wiped off the face of the earth by a potato.  All I know is that if you ever see 4 people claiming to be Irish, you'll find a fifth.

The potato famine resulted from the crown stranglehold ...... the crown stole everything ...... you want to know why so many Paddys despise the crown ...... it didn't start there, if you did not pay your tax to the crown, your house got burned down, your women were raped and they beat you to death, makes warcrime a useful word, but will never repair the damage.

Maybe because the Irish of today were the lucky ones who survived the potato famine?  According to some posts, I can't claim to be of Irish heritage

Bear, if anyone claims you're not Irish they should be likely to be stupid enough to also claim that I am a lesbian.

Any self respecting Irish person knows at least 50 different ways to prepere and serve potato, BUT the potato is not native and the crown had/has no sympathy for those it cannot feed off. You are as much a part of your tribe as any ancestor and any challenge to that can only be dealt with by chiefs. Therefore you belong amongst us.

Some "others" do not like our wealth of tribal history, the same can be said for those who refuse to acnowlege that the land they"own" has been stolen from others too, with disregard for anything other than greed. It would be interesting, given the short history of the Americas, to see how many "land owners" would give up their blood drenched fields in favour of righting past wrongs.

I am not full Irish as you know but I am full Celt and for that I will respect my tribe and the tribes who invite me into them.

I have many tribes to respect, (including Zulu and Maori,) so I understand these days what the shoulder tattoo really means ...... Yanks cannot read it, yet people they see as "primitive" or not "civilised" can ...... so I will say this, (and I have Army friends who do not object to my open approach) ...... "Fuck The Union Jack"

In my profile,as you know,I have listed Catholicism as a hard limit and that will never change (even though I got a medal from the last Pope). I can only repeat that propaganda of the crown has caused the religious bigotry that continues to this day.

I will support any tribesman (woman are masculine in this grammatical context) in their pursuit of their heritage, it is a strong emotion which is much misunderstood upon these shores (written in Tampa Florida U.S.A.)

The Glencoe issue ( of anno domini : 1692) we discussed, it's up to you but I'm happy to make our conclusion public.

It was a very proud moment for me when we both stepped forward to that pipe tune.

I love you Sunny, you put that so well.

I know what America is too, but how many U.S. citizens do ? ...... I will not even imagine the result of a public poll on that one.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example : I can speak several American languages, I am in the United States Of "America" now and having to learn a new language.

That's an interesting take on it, considering the long list of Scottish inventions that have been taken on board the world over; it utterly dwarfs Irish achievements.

Have you ever heard of a tribe?, In Irish terms, it does not require the bloodline that seems to confuse so many ... indeed, the Celts were and still are adoptive. The purity issue is for ignorant fascists. The Irish did not invent fascism.

Anyone who uses the word "plaid" instead of Tartan is not Irish,Scottish,Breton,English,or Welsh ... and should pursue further study before making further comment.

Tartan is not a Scottish invention.

Northern Gent is mostly right, I will add to his observations, Scottish pride is rightfully unrivalled, a difficult thing for an Englishman to admit, however ... true.

On our isles, we have a mostly amicable disrespect for each others tribes, this works very well indeed without parasites stealing from us.
