No CL nothing I have seen suggests for a moment this particular woman is "acceptable".Nothing in the flimsy selection process used to arrive at this selection is "acceptable"either. It would seem they gave more thought to that green backdrop than who would be a heart beat away.....and that is never acceptable.McCain is asking the electorate to choose him to be President and this is the well thought out selecion he puts forth. He owes the Republican party and all of the Republican boosters an apology for forcing them to put all this spin on what is proving to be a monumental fuck-up of a selection

Well, unless the Governor has something really devious that comes out, what damage her background can do has already been done. The people that are excited at her presence on the ticket will remain so, and those who aren't will continue along the path of McCain's decision making being flawed.
I find his haste to make a splash a bit concerning, but, it isn't as though I was ever mistaken for a McCain supporter.

How can an Alaskan separatist be VP of the United States?  Shouldn't she be Alaskan ambassador to Washington?  That way, they can recall her when they declare UDI.

I’m with you RealityLicks. I can't believe the people here on CM and the general public are hung up on a silly debate over a pregnant daughter when the candidate advocated...at least by membership, in an organization that wants a vote to secede from the union.

This is like Grant asking Jefferson Davis to run for VP.

Curiouser and curiouser. If, for the sake of argument, we agree that she was not thoroughly vetted, what ramifications exist for McCain? Are the vetters the same folks that would join him in office? Some of our best presidents, it seems to me, have been deemed "the best" in part (at least) for their ability to surround themselves with the best and brightest in their respective areas of expertise and responsibility.

Was this rather dim? Do these folks not matter ultimately?

[Edit to say this was a FR]

Palin's daughter could have benefited from one of these free condoms so liberally distributed by the Democrats  . Harsh, but true.

Where's that bowl you speak of?

Oh yeah, because teenagers always use condoms, especially African American minority teenages. Don't you know that is why the out of  wedlock teenage birthrate in that community is so low. And let us not forget, the out of wedlock teenage father rate among African Americans is soooooo low as to be non existant. They never pressure teenage girls into sex w/o a condom.

Sadly, it seems that the lower you get in the economic class range, the more pregancies you get. And the strange thing is, there are all kind of free resourses, free condoms, free birth contol pills and such in the Low and lower middle salary range neighborhoods than in the upper/rich ones where the actually pay for such things.

Seriously Sun Kitten.... I think in your heart you probably know better and if not you need to look a little deeper. Free or not, teenages just do not use birth control, especially condoms!

More than 18 million Democratic voters decided during a long drawn out nomination process he was acceptable as their candidate.McCain and 4(?) of his advisors have made this foolhardy selection...see the difference?

That's interesting, DK. How did you find that out?

I'm a little surprised the airlines let such a heavily pregnant person on a plane.

Palin Labor

I have to say.. that 'choice' goes a long way with me. Palin made her 'choice', assessed her risks and took her chances. I would be hypocritical to fault her for it. It's not a choice I would have made for myself .. it's a choice I would discourage my own daughter from, but ultimately, I would give that choice freely to Palin whether or not she would give it to someone else.

That's exactly the same question I'd ask if I were: blind, deaf, dumb, wearing a blindfold, side blinders, and living in a locked closet.

Nick Clooney (George Clooney's dad and a big Obama supporter) said that the mainstream media have sunk to the level of "tabloid trash." He said he cant believe that the media is spending time trashing a pregnant teenager rather than discuss the big issues facing the country.

Biden today was asked about Palin's daughter and he said the same today that Obama said yesturday that "family is off-limits" and he said he was not going to answer those questions.

It's not even Democrats or the Obama campaign fueling this. It's the media that is blowing it up trying to make an issue out of it. Then you got the DailyKos making up stories over the weekend. The New York Times had THREE stories on their front page JUST ON the Palin pregnancy. So I agree with Clooney.....this is tabloid trash.

Total time between her amniotic fluid starting to leak and her receiving in person medical care was at least 22 hours. This was the child with Trisomy born when she was 44 years of age.

All told I have issues with her taking a flight at 8 months, not going to a hospital in Dallas when things started happening, getting on two seperate flights while in active labor, not going directly to one of two hospitals in Anchorage and driving an additional hour before getting any care for herself and her son.

While I can understand some of the issues you have with Palin's decision making process while in labor with her son, I would like to point out a couple of things that - to me at least - are significant.

Her son's Trisomy syndrome was not caused by her decision making process.  It is a genetic defect, one often present in children born to women in their late 30s and older.  NOTHING she did or didn't do during labor would have - or Could have - changed the fact that he was born with a trisomy.  Nothing done during the entire length of the pregnancy could have changed that, short of divine intervention, if you happen to believe in such things.  The only thing that Might have prevented the trisomy would be significant luck combined with the pregnancy being when she was significantly Younger.  The older a woman becomes, the higher the risk of Trisomy problems - specifically of Trisomy 21, or Downs' Syndrome - showing up in the resulting child.  If her son has a Trisomy other than 21, it's more likely a recessive genetic trait hidden in both families that could have shown up at any time in any pregnancy.    The specific chromosone which was trippled determines the specific type of disabilities caused by a trisomy, and they are as varied as the combination of chromosones and at what point during the pregnancy the faulty split occured.  Some trisomies are simply lethal in-utero, and therefore are pretty much never seen (and unnamed except by the number of the chromosone suspected to be the culprit).  Others are not directly lethal, and can cause problems that range from mild disfunction to very specific varieties of dwarfism to the mongoloidism seen in Downs'.

Second - leaking fluid and a fully broken amniotic sack feel Significantly different.  One is a flood - the other can easily be mistaken for a leaky bladder due to pressure from the placement of the child.  She passed up 2 hospitals that were along her route, in order to go to the one where she had already made plans - where her doctor was, where her charts were, where she - the one in labor - would be most comfortable.  She may not have let the airline crews know she was "in labor" because she may not have Realised she was Actively in labor.  Braxton-Hicks contractions (most commonly refered to as "false labor") feel about the same - and a woman who has been through BH contractions often enough in prior pregnancies - or even during That pregnancy - might mistake one for the other - especially if eager to get home to her own doctors who have followed the case and whom she's comfortable with.

I'm willing to make a bet - even having as limited acess as any of us have to Palin's reasoning during the time in question - that her doctors either already knew, or strongly suspected, that there would be problems with her son.  Her age would have been a strong factor for them to consider, in light of the plethora of research that shows older mothers carry such a high risk for a wide variety of problems.  They would have planned for that - other hospitals, where she was not registered - and which therefore did not have Immediate access to her records - would NOT necessarily have been prepared In The Labor Room Already to deal with those issues.  Hospital maternity wards don't typically set up for neo-nate ICU services in the labor room unless they're already aware that there's probably going to be a Need for it with a particular delivery.   Yes, those other hospitals could - and likely would - have made adjustments based on Palin's age - but they still wouldn't have been the doctors Familiar with her and her pregnancy.

Regardless of how anyone feels about Palin's decision making process during her pregnancy with her son, I personally feel that it has little to do with her record as a politician.  What I'm interested in is what she's done specifically in the Political Arena - what laws has she been for or against, what has been her stance on the REAL issues facing the american public like repealing unconstitutional laws, affordable health care, the ludicrous "war on drugs" and the apparantly Never Ending "war against terrorism"?

Wrong - if you provide information and honest, frank sex education, the teenage pregnancy rate goes way down. It works everywhere else: how about giving it a go? It can't do any harm, considering where it's at right now. So, no, I don't know that.

And you too sun kittin...

My point is the out of wedlock teenage birth rate is out of control in America and in particular it is a problem a near pandemic in the African American community and all the free condoms in the world are not stopping it!

That somehow a free condom would have stopped that pregnancy or some, or many or most is false.

I could take you to a great number of Baltimore City Middle and High Schools, (Both overwhelminly African American populated) where birth control counseling are in school or easy to get to and the follow up medications are free, and  The condoms are availblle, in not only nurses offices, but athlete offices, common rooms and community rooms and many class rooms.  And the more money they spend on condoms, the more the birth rate goes up!

They are bending over backward in Baltimore inner city schools to point out that sex is the surest way to get pregnant, that condoms and birth control works and again the rates keep going up.  And the nessages, in on bill boards, buses, light rail and subway trains and posters throughout schools.

Cyber why do I get the feeling if this was tabloid trash slicing up the Democratic ticket ,your might not be so quick to dismiss it.By the way most of the coverage I have seen including those three stories in the Times dealt with how McCain made this choice ,what did he know and when did he know it.In other words legitimate questions dealing with the judgement of the Republican nominee

Notwithstanding the African American teenage pregnancy rages (seriously, strange battle horse, FatDad), I hear on the grapevine that Palin's nomination as vice president is making a lot, and I mean A LOT, of Republican delegates gasp with horror. It goes without saying that they can't show their disapproval (party unity and all that), but Subtee's question is very relevant: with advisers capable of dishing out such crappy advice, McCain's potential election as the president is looking more and more like a terrible liability. I'm sure he's alright, as a person, but he miscalculated big time, and at such a level of politics... that's unforgivable.

I was presented with this as a definitive position concerning Senator McCain's choice from a 'high' level Senator Obama supporter:
http://getdrunkandvote4mccain.com/archive/p-diddy-opines-on-the-mccain-palin-ticket

Enjoy! Or at least laugh at anyone taking this seriously...

Will this be on MTV as a 'get out and vote' PSA?

BTW - Mr. Palin the DUI husband,  although Mr. Diddy didn't think to mention it, is a member of a smaller recognized US minority than Senator Obama.
