..is it true that grapes will catch fire if you put them in the microwave?? *contacts Mythbusters*

Yes.  The Popular Science  guy on Food Detectives, did it on the show.

But if you do not believe me. . . put some grapes in your microwave

I have one of those flat top stoves and one day I stupidly put an oven mitt down on the top - couldn't figure out what was burning until I remembered I had had one of the burners on!

LOL I can unfortunately admit I had nothing to do with teaching(or lack therof) Holly to cook. Or to put it better to burn things down

actually i taught myself to start fires...i mean...to cook.

I started with "The Joy of Cooking" but left it on the stove after i turned on the burner and caught it on fire. From then on i just winged it.

Aylee -> RE: Safety Message about Holly's Cooking (9/16/2008 8:20:53 AM)

I was cooking one night, supposedly being helped by the other half and the roommate.  When one of them set a deep-dish-glass-pie-pan down on a burner that was still on.  I was making gravey on the next burner.

You know, those things EXPLODE once they reach a certain temperature like that.

Glass flew EVERYWHERE!  Dinner was ruined.

That is just one of the many reasons that the kitchen is off limits to any but me.

beargonewild -> RE: Safety Message about Holly's Cooking (9/16/2008 8:25:52 AM)

Ugh, hope no one was cut by the flying glass. One of the worse accidents I saw was at a restaurant I worked at. One of the part timers was heating up more soup. Instead of taking the metal ladle out, he left it in and went to get a drink, came back a few minutes later and grabbed the metal ladle after it was sitting over the gas flame and got 2nd degree burns across the palm of his hand.

pissthirstysub -> RE: Safety Message about Holly's Cooking (9/16/2008 8:38:36 AM)

I have done that a couple times, mass-cooking bacon and forgot which side was the hot pans that just came out and which was the ones that were about to go in.

No, no one was hurt.  I also threw ALL the food away, because I did not want the risk of any small unseen bits of glass in it.

I was rather irritated however.

Goat swallowing is okay.

Glass swallowing is a hard limit.

Poor man eats at work every chance he has.....

Aylee -> RE: Safety Message about Holly's Cooking (9/16/2008 9:34:23 AM)

What?  You don't make his lunch?

You do know that they pay triple on the death benefits if he dies at work.

sirsholly -> RE: Safety Message about Holly's Cooking (9/16/2008 9:36:51 AM)

i do pack a lunch for him (he didn't eat the burned grapes, btw...must notta been hungry) but his company is always catering in for something or other...

*snort*   now that's just plain EVIL!!!!!

soul2share -> RE: Safety Message about Holly's Cooking (9/16/2008 12:04:54 PM)

Aylee, I'm with you...no one but me is allowed to cook in my kitchen!!!  Of course, they are plenty allowed to CLEAN UP!  (That's the rule...she who cooks DOES NOT clean up!)  Fortunately, I can honestly say that I've never had any disasters such as those listed here......I don't have a microwave, and keep my dishtowels on my shoulder while cooking.  I did scorch a potholder once on an electric element in the oven.....

When I oops, it's usually doing something like forgetting to put the baking soda into a brownie recipe....can you say "chocolate brick"?  And I misread a recipe for cookies and put 3/4 cup salt in it instead of the sugar....but I'm better now.....haven't ruined anything in years!  Of course, most of my recipes are in my head, so at least I can't read it wrong again!  [:D]

Maybe they realized that it is cheaper to pay for catering than for the increased health/life insurance benefits that may be associated with your "cooking"?

Thanks for the smiles Holly.
