They are allowed to think they are witty and funny because so very few stand up and say something. Often when someone does say something, they close ranks.

Luckily I don't care what the forum regs think of me!

If enough people stand up and say that the behavior is out of line, maybe then there will be an influx of new and good posters.

I'll offer another option instead: How about taking part more often in the OP's thread and responding only to those with whom you wish to discuss the topic?  Skip over the comments you don't like and respond only to those you think are valid.

Maybe you'd rather read the 29 page thread for insights rather than revive a 4 month old thread? Just saying...

- LA

I see reviving old threads as a total no win situation. If someone starts a thread they get told to go read old threads. If someone revives an old thread they get asked wtf they were doing reviving an old thread.

As always when someone complains about a thread I wonder why they didn't just skip reading it, be it the topic or the poster that causes irritation. Is it just a part of human nature, to react to something that irritates rather than just ignore? I see this happen all over the forum.

One reason they can't skip reading it is because, then they can't come and bitch about reviving an old thread.
Part of the fun here is complaining about brining back old threads.
They are compelled to read whatever thread is started and then bitch about it.

Apparently not as much fun as being passive agressive! :-)

Oh for fuck's sake.

In all seriousness, nobody owes anybody anything here.  Not responses to emails and not the way you 'think' people should respond on the forums.  If you don't like the style of someone who regularly chimes in around here, block them.  People who contribute here do so for their own reasons and in most cases, it's not to cater to anyone who wants to tell them that they have to do it someone else's way.

When anyone out there starts answering every piece of junk snail mail (advertisements, coupons, those lovely random mailings from the local insurance company, etc) that they receive in real life, then you have something to complain about when people aren't 'courteous' enough to reply to every email someone sends.  When every munch you attend your sole priority is make sure that the new person who is there for the first time is taken care of, rather than speaking with your own friends or helping plan the next play party or demo, you can complain about that.  Until those things happen, these whines are nothing more than hypocritical complaints because we aren't catering to what you want.

LA isn't a derisive poster, actually. The issue she brought up is a fair point of discussion and one that, after being on a message forum for a long enough while, seems to make sense but which I'd probably disagree with her on.

The catch 22 of how to broach a new topic in a personally interactive way sucks. New threads are likely the best option, since reviving older threads make for confusion in the timeline (with people sometimes responding to a poster who was on the site 3 years ago).

Or LA might try and sway me to her side of the argument with more leg pics.

Oh for fuck's sake, freedom of speech means people are allowed to comment on how they are treated, and their perceptions of how others are acting.
No one has to read the complaints either.

Wow, you kids are really upset today. poor newbies.

You should go complain to the mods about all the mean "girls" and all the cliques that won't coddle you.

But you do have some knights in shining armor to act as hall monitors, so you are covered.

Hmmmm...interesting you should site that particular thread. Could it be...no...it couldn't be that you raced in here under a new nick for the purposes of defending the righteous newbies?

Could it be... could it be? Nope. I'm not that unfortunate poster. Nor do I have need for knights in shiny or dingy armor, I do fine on my own. I don't want coddling (unless I have the flu then please coddle away).

Funny though that I'm getting postive responses, does that shake you up a bit? It must or you wouldn't bother responding to me.

I know that many of you actually get off on trashing people. Doesn't that EVER cause a twinge inside?

No hon, nothing shakes me up other than things affecting my family or friends.

Here on a message board? Nah...it's too silly to be upsetting. Pixels until we meet, get it?

You and the other thin skinned folks are unable to come up with anything intelligent to say other than "you meanies must love trashing people".

Try gaining some reading comprehension skills and some insight into message boards. No one trashed anyone on this thread for asking the question, both LA and me replied nicely.

But when your delicate sensibilities are threatened, you start crying for mama, and the mods.

And not that I feel you are important enough for me to reply to, but I reply to whomever and whatever I want, whenever I want unless the mods say otherwise,

Get it chickie?

Oh and my only twinges inside are when I am getting off.

Now back to our regularly scheduled bitchfest.

Some new folks are treated worse than they should be. Some get what they deserve

And there is some truth in the "it's a no win situation" regarding either starting new threads, or reviving old ones. My advice, if you want to start a new one, do so, and ignore anyone telling you to "search", more than likely, you'll get some decent answers. Reviving an old thread, ehhh, you're more likely to get a bad response.

Technically, there is no freedom of speech provision on a private website (despite the cute fact that they argue for it in the ToS lol).

There is actually a 3rd path:  do no posting and simply read the existing and extensive thread - but it only works if someone accepts that a new thread isn't needed, nor revival of the existing and extensively-beaten topic is needed.
Ahhhh....the voice of reason. To simply stop beating the dead horse and read what has been written.

I guess you missed the part where I discussed seeing this as an opportunity to tell a new comer about good forum etiquette.

Ok, in hindsight, I admit, I could have added a "and welcome to the boards".

- LA
It wasn't directed towards you LA and I don't think you were rude. I was agreeing that opening an old post with a new entry that basically says exactly what the OP said....without bothering to read the responses was beating a dead horse.

The reasons for not responding to emails hasn't changed, and by simply reading what was here would have answered the repeated question.

Maybe so, my point is, people will and have a right to revive old threads.
Trying to control them is what makes me laugh.
How can we control what everyone on the internet does?
If I have already read a thread, I just don't re-read it, no need for me to comment.

But then, I am not trying to run or control a message board or the internet, I am not
the reviving old threads and bringing up old topics, police.

You are exactly right. No one can control anything other than the owners of this site.

And this argument probably goes on ad nauseum on other sites, long ago and will go on eons from now unless someone finds a way to zap someone they don't like with a laser beam that goes through the monitor instantly vaporizing the offending poster.

This brings up a question: I've seen, in the past, Mods criticize posters for bumping old threads; is there anything in the TOS about this?

I personally don't care either way; all that matters to me, is that something be interesting. Old or new.

Just as I mentioned some threads are trolls and some just may seem like it because the poster is new or a bit naive, some responses are derisive for the sake of being derisive and some just seem to appear that way when actually trying to be helpful.

Just be attentive to the tone people take in their follow-up commentaries and you can quickly gauge who is being more honest and who's just trolling.

NZ - If you want more leg, just ask for more leg ;-) But I actually said the same thing as you! I recommend a new thread as they are generally well received when they don't come across as hostile. Yeah there are a few idiots here who aren't nice to new people and often times, regular posters will call them to order. I actually try to help the new people but sometimes it blows up in my face because they become hostile that I give them advice on how to integrate.

Just from yesterday:
Example 1: http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3038305
Example 2: http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3038873
Example 3: http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3039161 which totally backfired as you can see.

I'm sure some regular posters don't like me very much for this but I try to be fair. That said, I'm far from perfect and will end up indavertantly pissing someone off at some point. That is part of life apparently!

But surely a post engaging in open and honest debate would be a comment that you would like, whether or not it disagreed with you?
I don't have to agree with you all the time to get you to like me, do I?

I personally wouldn't equate skipping posts I don't like with not engaging in debate...

There is absolutely no downside overall, except that it consistently pisses off certain OPs who don't get the responses and welcome they want.   Others manage to roll with it.

Yeah, but that isn't the situation we're dealing with here. If all the people who thought they could toss in a clever quip into  thread by a new poster that has been discussed before actually ignored it, the thread would either stay empty or it would be responded to be people who do feel motivated to answer without poking unnecessary fun.

The issue here is about how people respond, really...not about how people post.

Oh, come on, the issue is about how BOTH sides interact - those who post and those who respond - and how they don't like the interactions they have because one can't control the other.  It's an (mostly) open forum.  You get what you get.
