In walks a friend of mine, my favorite psychopath in fact. He corresponded with someone in Austrailia and just told me that she had no idea what a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is.

No PBJs in Austrailia ? Wow. Actually that doesn't bother me, but that gun control thing........ other than that I would probably be there.

Honey, they eat the vegemite there. Hard limit.

Bugger is not slang
quote:

ORIGINAL: UmbraDomina

other different words........

tin = can ...... aka a tin of green beans
fag = slang for a cigerette... aka hey mate can I bum a fag?
Flat = apartment
barrister = attorney
aerial = antenna
bash= can mean a party, but also could be a slang in the uk for masterbation..aka.... "I am going to bash one out"
bin or dustbin= trashcan
boot = trunk of a car
bugger = anal sex slang, also used as a verb...... aka "go bugger off"
tube= subway
torch = flashlight
jumper= tanktop style shirt  or sweater or sleeveless dress
stuff =  to have sex - often used as a milder form of "fuck", eg "Get stuffed!" (for "Fuck off!")
stone = a measurment of weight aka....14 pounds in weight (14 lb), normally used when specifying a person's weight
lift = elevator
petrol = gasoline

goodness knows there are tons more.........

but is it an alley, or a ginnel or a snicket?
do you eat a roll, a bap, a batch, a butty, a stottie or a breadcake? (I grew up eating rolls, for a short while at university I flirted with eating Stotties, and nowadays I suffice with a butty for my lunch)

Hey staysoft - ya left out 'cob'.[;)]

I won't mention Worcester, Gloucester or Leicester.
*lives there*

My personal favourite place name is "Loughborough".

I was asked yesterday when we (the English) celebrated "Thanksgiving".  I thought that was amusing.

An arse is not a fanny, a fanny is the cunt... the bum is the arse...

piratecommander -> RE: Terminology across the pond (10/21/2008 5:43:02 PM)

Tab is also a north eastern term for a fag (as in cigarette)
quote:

ORIGINAL: IvyMorgan

The other thread about paying Tabs got me thinking...

A "Tab" is a Cambridge university student.  And the word Tab can be used to apply to a few other things Cambridge University related.

If you're an Oxford student, you may well say "Tab" as a kind of mock insult.

And as the conversation elevates itself to new heights of literary sophistication...

Hey GT, I hope you are taking notes, come and live in the UK, you are going to need a good education in slang as well as our usage of our English language.

GreedyTop -> RE: Terminology across the pond (10/21/2008 6:22:45 PM)

I am, Aneirin!  :D   *smooch*

Plonker is in this case a euphemism for the male member.......ie: a "Dick"

GreedyTop -> RE: Terminology across the pond (10/21/2008 8:00:37 PM)

in that case, Plonker is perfectly acceptable when applied to GW
